Alien: Romulus is really disturbing

Alien: Romulus (2024) is another entry in the Alien universe, and as much as I thought this movie was pretty good, I walked out of the theater never wanting to see it again.

I enjoyed the film a lot actually. I’ve really expanded my film range so I feel like I’ve really seen it all. As a result nothing feels “too weird” for me or it really has to be out there to unsettle me. Actually, hot take, I actually liked how out there it was. Unlike the previous films were were pretty unsettling like with Alien: covenant and Prometheus this film felt pretty grounded and simple. All aspects of the film added to the horror element and the ending was a genuine twist I didn’t see coming. I like that the fact they were in spaces was utilized well with the characters unable to just kill the aliens as the acid would kill them. When the main character turn off the gravity to massacre the aliens it was so satisfying and felt earned. This was an amazing direction to take the series coming from someone who has seen almost all the films. It was able to feel like a horror movie like the first film with glimpses of action like in the second film. It was a simple story with CGI effects. I went with a friend who’d never seen any of the films (but is a horror enjoyer) and she loved it. Overall, best space sci-fi film in a while.

Now that you mention it, Prometheus and Alien: Covenant are actually really unsettling, just in a more existential way (with the whole mystery of the Engineers, as well as, David becoming evil), whereas this one was just kind of grotesque. I do agree that this film was pretty straightforward, both in terms of the plot and the horror elements, but it was gripping enough to keep my attention the whole way through. Solid movie, I just don't see myself watching it over and over again though haha.

@@JessInDreams7 I understand not loving the film. It definitely isn’t something everyone will enjoy considering the original 2 films were pretty toned down compared to all future films. I just love sci-fi and this was a solid film. Plus I’ve seen Neon Genesis Evangelion which is like 3x more disturbing than anything in the alien film series so Romulus was a cake walk

I had the opportunity to watch the original Alien in the theaters this year as part of some 45th anniversary thing. It was like watching it for the first time. A total vibes movie, a haunted house in space. If you do end up watching it don't even bother thinking about the other films, just go with it. Same goes for the sequel.

imo this movie is the 2nd best movie in Alien franchise (after the 1st Alien in 1979) 😃. I like the cast, particularly Andy & Rain, and the thing in the end

Since I haven't seen the original Alien movie, what I liked about this one was that it kept me on my toes, and there were so many unexpected things (especially the creature in the end 😁).

You NEED to see the original, the one and only, the first one: The Alien ..with Sigorney Weaver .. you want to love a character? you will love the movie, you will love her, scream and root for her. It's a must :) Enjoy

Great review. Thanks! (I liked Prometheus also…but I’m not a fan of Covenant, it wasn’t my cup of tea and was kind of dumb (though I will say “Alien” and “Aliens” were brilliant but I really did dislike being terrified for the length of their runs) 🤷🏻‍♀️

i saw this yesterday (saturday) and it felt at times that it was an alien film; and at times it also felt like something I had seen before. granted I have seen every Alien film since the first one when i was a kid; but with Romulus .. everything about it seemed meh. the characters were meh and one of them was so cliche with his character type that when he got it.. it was satisfying. the scares were there; but yet they were not scary. I knew where the scenes were going to happen and about mid way through I found myself wondering when the movie was going to begin and by that time.. it was over lol. I'll watch it again when it's online to stream and see how I feel again.

It did seem like this film didn't add anything new to the franchise. I initially thought it was supposed to be a reboot? So it would make sense that it's pretty much a mashup of some of the previous films, but then it turns out it's supposed to fit into the timeline between Alien and Aliens. In that sense, it seems kind of unnecessary and more of the same stuff that already exists.

I didn't care about the characters either! Watch Alien and Aliens. Alien made you care about its characters by leaning heavily into the cosmic horror. Like "Wow these characters are super ordinary space truckers that aren't that attractive or charismatic but I care about them because what they're up against is so unbelievably awe-inspiringly scary and unknowable on a cosmic scale." So Alien Romulus should've tried harder to scare us with some Cthulhu level stuff but instead just gave us what we'd seen before. And Aliens made you care about its characters by going all in on the backstory and character arc of one character from the previous movie. Like the story is completely about that one person and no one else really. The audience wants to just see that person make it out alive and have a happy ending. Alien Romulus on the other hand presents us with Rain but doesn't do enough to make us care about her. I think this could've been solved with another 10-20min of showing what life is like on the mining planet. They jetted off into space way too quickly.

Yea, I think most of the characters in this movie were underdeveloped and just kind of dislikable in general. Rain was ok, but we didn’t have much time to get to know her well enough to care beyond a superficial level. I’m excited to see Alien and Aliens because it does sound like those movies did much better with the character arcs.

my friend took me to watch this, i was so terrified in the threater, i couldn't even watch some scenes, and now this piece of shit will stay in my mind. honestly i was liking it, it was a new feeling, but i dont want to have that feeling.
