I didn't hate the movie, but also it was incredibly mid. ALIEN is a beloved franchise for me, and I actually don't hate Prometheus or ALIEN: Covenant, but Romulus was really just..... dumb. It has that Disney "The Force Awakes" vibe to it where all it was was nostalgia bait. Very, very mid.

I'm definitely not one for conspiracy theories, but it seems to me only smaller channels are ones giving this film an honest review. Once I heard it was set in-between Alien and Alien$, I already knew that it wasn't going to have much of an identity on its own. And, I was correct. This film was hot garbage strung together with the skin of my childhood. It was nonstop references, call-backs, homages, and Easter eggs. When Andy (what an original name for an android) said Ripley's famous line to the queen, I groaned so loud another person in the theater laughed, because it was so contrived and cringey. It also just made no sense, which is a common core problem with this movie. It made no sense. The only good thing about it was the production design and I can't even compliment the film, because that was all cribbed from Alien, Aliens & Alien: Isolation. I know everyone thinks Fede Alvarez is a good director, but he's just a lame provocateur, who uses gags, gross outs and jump cuts instead of actual narrative or character growth. In all honesty, it's his Director of Photography who does all the heavy lifting, so he can focus on gore and nothing else. His whole career is just one giant reference to other people's work, so I didn't expect anything original. I mean this is a director who made his name off of two long-running franchises (Evil Dead & Texas Chainsaw Massacre). I know the simps are gobbling this film up, but that is just an indictment on the state of cinema: People are now at the stage where they feign interest simply to have something to do.

They didnt retcon Prometheus. Weyland-Yutani knew about the events of Prometheus because of David. At the end of Prometheus David and Shaw leave together on an engineer ship. In Alien Covenant we learn that David had arrived on an engineer homeworld and he unleashes black goo upon them wiping them out. He then uses Shaws body for his experiments and he creates the Xenomorph. David eventually gains control of the Covenant and all 2000 people in hypersleep aboard that ship. We can only assume what sick experiments he will use them for. He then says hes got one last thing to perfect... his queen. So we can assume he will use the passengers to create a Queen Xenomorph. He then sends a message to Weyland-Yutani about his research. The reason they needed the Alien in Romulus was so they could reverse engineer the black goo and then expand on Davids research.

@@RETROORDIEI'm no expert either but I rewatch all the movies before going to see Romulus because I forgot a lot of the lore. Yeah, I can see them adding some of the comic stories into movies and shows. Disney has so many movies and shows of Star Wars right now and won't be surprised if they do the same with Alien. I think that Disney is testing the waters with fans right now to see what sticks and see where they should go next with the franchise. Alien: Earth will be releasing next year. The show will be before the prequels and Ripley won't be a part of it. Might be something you will be interested in. Im definitely interested in seeing where it takes Alien. It seems we will start getting new stories spread across different planets. We got a glimpse of Jacksons Star colony in Romulus and we will get to see a story set on Earth for the first time in Alien: Earth.

I might be able to explain the Prometheus plothole in this film and try to make a little bit more sense out of it: I think the reason he said, "Thanks to Prometheus" is because Weyland Yutani knew about what happened on that mission (It was a Weyland ship), knew the location (because they knew about the location of the Derelict ship or that something was on LV-426 in Alien/Aliens, and they knew in Alien 3 where Ripley was at and pregnant with the alien so that tells me they keep close track of everything involving their ships/missions in this universe so the Prometheus mission would be no different) of where that ship landed and got destroyed, David was more than likely a company mole and kept tabs on what was going on just like Ash did in Alien (that's how they found out about the existence of the creature) and told them about the black goo pathogen, Weyland probably sent out some corporate goons to search out LV-223 to search for the ship, investigate what happened, and retrieve some of the black goo for experimentation. Honestly this is the only logical way I can explain as to how they could've gotten the black goo, so I don't think it was intended as a retcon, it's just that the filmmakers didn't do a very good job of trying to explain it.

I will never understand the blind praise im hearing for Romulus. Everyone is praising Romulus for exact same issues that they constantly trash Prometheus and Covenant. The characters are flat and forgettable. The writing for them is nonexistent most of the time. The acting is completely dispassionate... or talentless, however you want to look at it. The fan service is completely inappropriate for a serious Alien film. Not even Resurrection stooped so low as to directly quote better, better movies in the franchise. As a fan, the "Get away from her you b****" line was completely insulting. How or why would they try to cheapen Ripleys glorious moment in Aliens?? I'm pausing at 05.23minutes into your video; to correct You here. The Xenomorph was still on the Narcissus(shuttle) with Ripley when the Nostromo exploded. She then notices it on the shuttle with her, then puts on a suit and straps in, to then open the airlock shoot it with a harpoon gun. Then she blasts it with the thrusters which technically could have sent it back towards where the Nostromo blast happened, given the distance and years gone by. However please understand I agree with you on Romulus being nonsensical and illogical, even just as a sci-fi movie and not just because it's an ALIEN film. I enjoyed what it was but hated the ending for 2 reasons; the first it being an almost carbon copy of Alien Resurrection ending, and the second being the illogical fact that the hybrid's egg burned a hole through the cryo deck corridor floor. The cryo deck corridor only had one door at the end which was to the bridge, the other end to the corridor was completely open to the cryo deck. The acid burned the egg down through the floor and into the cargo hold; which was then later ejected from the ship. So technically there's a hull breach here, an open burned hole through the cryo deck corridor floor, into the cargo hold which is now no longer there. So this hole should be to open space beneath it, Right? Then the next scene shows Raine putting Andy into a cryo pod, and she is NO LONGER WEARING A SUIT/HELMET. So to me this illogical scene ruined everything that came before it. How was that room not decompressed having an open corridor in it that has a hole through the floor leading to now open space? I'm hoping you mentions this LOL. I saw the movie twice just to see if I missed something, as I had noticed this literal plot-hole/acid-hole the first time I saw it and wondered how is she even breathing in that room. This doesn't make SPACE SENSE

Great point on why the original Alien was found in the Nostromo wreckage when it escaped the Nostromo with Ripley. Moreover the Nostromo wreckage was to tightly concentrated within a space location. The original Nuclear blast would've sent that wreckage debris soaring infinity through space. Practically nothing should've remained in the original explosion coordinates. How did the Alien cocoon itself in that meteor-like blob? Why was Wayland Yutani searching so feverishly for the Alien when they could've just went back to LV-426 to the distress signal location and took as many eggs as they wanted from the derelict horse shoe craft. True, why send humans into space when you could send a fleet of synthetic androids that hold true to Company programming. Humans unnecessary.

The third act introduces 5th Dimensional entities that eventually come for the human and cue due to their rising entanglement with the unearthly energies they co-mingle with throughout the story. My Agent fucked me on one of my works and I set it all aside to pursue my precision machinist career and my high-end acrylic painting passion. They cry when the film makers try something different like Prometheus, and then they cry when they go back to formula. There're a few embarrassing forced callbacks, but it's really so minor. Anyone who thinks fan service isn't baked into these sequels really should consider avoiding franchise movies in general. We're never going to reclaim the brilliance of the first two movies .. Just take Romulus for what it is and enjoy the ride. I feel like the negative reviews are more agenda driven than anything else. I believe people when they talk about why they didn't like it, but they're calling the movie 'trash', which is clearly not the case if you're speaking objectively. Go see it.. It's worth going to the theater for.

Being a fan of the franchise I wanted to lay the theatre to ashes after the movie. It's a total shit show and would be best described as a badly made greatest hits with a number of cringe inducing call backs, one so egregious that it singlehandedly ruins the movie without all the other bullshit. I'd give it 1/10. Anyone reviewing this movie in a good light is of the bent that can easily switch their brain off for 2 hours. It's even worse than covenant

This movie shouldve been set in the mines. We shouldve seen three classes of people established in the Alien universe. We shouldve seen the scientific class like we see in Alien and Isolation. We shouldve seen the elite or executive class as we see in Prometheus. They get to use the best tech imaginable. Then we see the working class like we see on LV426 or worse, the miners in Romulus. While the elites oversee everything from afar, the scientists experiment on the miners by unleashing a horde of facehuggers on the planet

Critics lamenting over Romulus need to establish the distinction criteria between (i) *Homage* / *Throwback* and (ii) *recycling* / *re-hashing* ! Critics lamenting over this movie not doing anything 'new' need to accompany that rant with precise suggestions (instead of idea-less blanket statements). Here are a number of new things manifest in Romulus :- *ᴥ* Revival of Dead Xenomorph (from Original) *ᴥ* Reveal about the Xenomorph's ability to survive in space *ᴥ* Revival of the Alien 1979 space ship interior + atmosphere *ᴥ* Eggless Face huggers *ᴥ* Swimming Face huggers *ᴥ* Face hugger removal *_during_* impregnation *ᴥ* Face hugger evasion technique by increasing room temperature *ᴥ* Chest burster x-ray view *ᴥ* Blue light on a *man made* spacecraft *ᴥ* Gravity free acid blood *ᴥ* Inferior Android model *ᴥ* Split Personality Android fighting internal dilemma *ᴥ* Black goo around the original Alien / Ash era *ᴥ* Black goo extraction / reverse engineered from Xenomorph *ᴥ* Prometheus & Covenant doevetailed into the storyline *ᴥ* Pregnant human female on board *ᴥ* Pregnant human + black goo giving birth to an egg - out of which we get a never-before-seen abomination (* _which fixed that terrible paper mashe hybrid blob in Alien Resurrection_ ) *ᴥ* Epic Scenery and later physical utilisation of the 'Saturn Ring' / planetary belt / or whatever it's called If that's not enough, then do a video with your own brand new ideas (and don't steal from the Dark Horse comics either! ) .. what they'll end up with will be an Alien equivalent to *'Cosmic Wars'* (see Simpsons Episode titled: *'Co-Dependents Day'* 😂 😂 😂 ) p.s. another thing to add to the whiners is *who told you that we're supposed to be routing for the 'crew' in this movie?* Ever considered some character's irritability may be done on purpose to catalyse the Xenos, Facehuggers, Variants, etc into *Anti Heros* ? _

But the whole film doesn't make sense, doesn't' stick to the alien canon. The growth time of the baby alien is 5 min. That took like 24 hours in the first movie. The "baby" hybrid took like 5 min to become full adult. Just so much stupid stuff, and rips off stuff from previous Alien films. It's terrible. Andy was the only good actor.

The problem with this review, is that you are only worried about the lack of logic in terms of cannon. What about just normal logic. A kid in his 20s is able to "find Romulus", but a corporation can't see it from their own planet. The same corporation does not seem aware their most important lab is in trouble or where it is in space. The acid eats through the outer shell of Romulus during the movie, but not in the original battle when Romulus is disabled. They take the "update" chip out of Rook, but Rook is still Rook while his chip is in Andy. The egg thing, during the movie I just assumed the face things were all clones, but you are right there were eggs (from where ????). The mouse with the goo, resurrects as a mouse, but baby humans instantly become 10 foot, tail flinging Engineers - lets assume the Laws of Thermodynamics do not work in this Universe. Do the interiors of the rooms look like they have been experiencing fluctuating gravity every few minutes, before the children arrive - no. You could not remember the character names after the movie, totally agree, though it was challenging to remember them during the movie. That is except for Andy - who was just a variant of Andy from the TV series Eureka. Worse of all it is not original, but a random paper mache of previous past and future cannon, illogically thrown together to allow the recreation of several of the best moments and hopes the younger generation will not be aware of this misappropriation

I can debunk all your claims almost everything you say doesn't make any sense. The way you say everything is stupid shows your lack of knowledge. Rook talks about the actual Prometheus fire like the myth or legend of old of the gods. Prometheus is a greek god that gave humanity the gift of fire. That is where the movies Prometheus are based on. Prometheus and Alien covenant are symbolic movies and modern versions of ancient stories. But according to you that must be stupid.
