In the universes of most of these stories, aliens tend to be super advanced, but also ridged, while humans are usually farther behind, but far more flexible.

I have never heard of anyone building a home on a dessert. I imagine that would be very challenging.

Oh, I dunno, depends on who's gonna live there, really - and the dessert of course. Imagine a largish meringue - sapient spiders, snakes (non-constrictor, naturally), birds, etc. After all , size is no indicator of talent or intelligence. 😇
