I’ve done this with just the big balloons and expanding foam. Needs sanded down a tad but it works pretty well too!

Can you spread the expanding foam over Duct Tape?…will it stick, I made a Facehugger egg from a 16” blow mold Easter egg and am wondering if I can tape it up with duct tape to get the striations and then spread on the foam like you did

Sorry I didn't get the film of that bit. You cut 4 straight line from the crown down the side to the desired length then fold them back. Because the egg is curved the shape that results is petal like.
