I love most of the cast like everyone else, but that's really interesting about Matthews' (Apone) experience in the Marines. There's a level of authenticity that you don't see in most fictional military depictions, and it makes so much sense that Aliens pulled it off because they went through training AND had a genuine Marine NCO in the cast. I'm surprised I didn't realize it before this video, as his portrayal reminds me of many of the NCOs I had personal experience with when I was in the army.

One of the great mysteries of cinema - what I heard was, Cameron was planning to include the opening scene where Newt's family finds the alien eggs, plus the scene where they set up the automatic machine guns in the hallways to mow down a few of the aliens. But Cameron was ordered to cut out a lot of great scenes for "time" by the studio. The studio said they were worried the film would run too long in theaters and cut in to their other films in release at the time! Considering the abysmal quality of most films in 1986, (other than Platoon and Top Gun) I'd add they had little to worry about.

It was immediately compelling to hear how you happened to watch Aliens at an important moment in your personal history. My mom, who had Parkinson’s disease, and I went to see it in the theater. Sci-Fi and horror were definitely not her typical genres, but I’d already seen it once, and convinced her to give it a chance, Though the film’s intensity caused her tremors to increase dramatically, she was extremely enthusiastic about the film, even letting out an uncharacteristic “whoop” when Ripley finally managed to eject the Queen into space. It turned out to be the last time she was able to actually visit a theater, and is one of the happiest memories I have of her.

Ripley says: "It can't be, that's in the room." It's because Hudson is counting down the distance and she's questioning his readings, because if he's right they'd be right in front of them inside the room. She then snatches the scanner and checks for herself. That's when she realises where they actually are, right above them inside the ceiling.

@GIOVONNI ARENIBAR But, are you claiming that a man would not have gone back for Newt?
@daverobson30845 жыл бұрын
@GIOVONNI ARENIBAR She went back for Jones in Alien . She wasn't the mother of a cat. She went in for the marines when things went to hell at the reactor. She wasn't a marine. I would say that, even had she never been a mother, Ripley would have gone back for Newt , because, she's just that kind of person. She can't leave someone ( even a cat) behind, if she thinks she has a chance to save them. Some people would say that the " motherly instinct" thing is a " sexist" belief as, if it had been Micheal Biehn's character, Hicks, who went back after Newt, nobody would have been talking about his " fatherly instinct". They would have just called him a hero. Ripley is also a hero. She went back for Newt. She went back for Jones. She went back for all of the marines. Even the ones who ( kind of) made fun of her. Hero.

Dave Robson I mean considering she saw how the aliens are born, she probably wouldn’t have been able to sleep again if she left Newt. Agreed tho regardless of why she did it, she’s a hero.
@AlexFlockhart4 жыл бұрын
@GIOVONNI ARENIBAR You probably don't even have to say female in that title. I can't think of a better protagonist, male or female. Her character is also fairly consistent, making decisions that don't betray her character even between 4 different directors.

Man I LOVE this movie. I have seen it numerous times and its great even today without any question. This movie inspired many other movies and videogames, especially my beloved Halo franchise. Marines from Halo are clearly inspired by marines from Aliens. Without Sgt. Apone there would not be Sgt.Johnson. The same could besaid about the design of dropships, spaceships, etc. Im very glad that you included scenes from Special Edition. They make the movie so much better. HUGE thank you Niyat for this awesome video. Great job as always.

What I loved about this film (besides the story, action and SFX) is the fact that the hardware such as weapons, vehicles, ships etc. are given a role. They are shown to the viewer, they have a name and they are cool. Also, there are so many of them! The Sulaco, the Drop-Ship, the Pulse-Rifle, the Smartgun, the APC, the Powerloader! They are not just mere "items" in the background like in most sci-fi films. They put effort in their design and they gave each item a story. Heck, even their Reeboks are cool!! (bought my 40th Ann. Alien Stompers recently) ;)

My favourite movie too, for many many reasons but I can't also help but feel that nostalgia plays a big role. Seeing Aliens on TV when I was a kid was something else, and yet after all this time, I enjoy it more and more - the film is just this perfect mix of all the things that are great about sci-fi, while also being this great action film that is its own unique experience. Add to that as the narrator stated - Ripley starts out in the movie as a cautious survivor that has just been through a harrowing ordeal, and just grows and grows as the film progresses, into this genuinely baddass hero that puts it all on the line to help everyone around her and not in some shitty 80's over the top kind of way either, she's smart, calculating and ruthless. Ripley was an icon for a reason, I'm not sure too many female protagonists were written and performed in quite such a strong way, which has only helped the character endure, not only in cinema but also in popular culture, as a role model to look up to (not just for girls and woman, but everybody).

Hey bud, the prologue you gave about watching Aliens as a child, alone in the dark after family troubles really struck a chord. I too watched it at as a 10 year old by myself, in the dark on VHS. My parents were unhappily married with frequent hostility within the house. I remember the film just absolutely blowing me away! I had never had a cinematic experience like that before, or even since. It is probably also my favourite film of all time.
