The Monument Valley games are absolutely phenomenal. I love them very dearly. The time, love, passion, effort and thought that went into each individual level. The use of impossible geometry and architecture, and having to manipulate it to open paths to continue. The OST, and the ambiance it carries. And above all else. The stories for each of the 2 games. Ustwo Games really did knock it out of the park with these mind-bending, illusion puzzle games. And I can't thank them enough. Absolutely gorgeous...

29:59 That would be awesome. A VR Experience of Monument Valley, where you are Ida, and on your non-dominant hand is an interactable map of the area, your dominant hand is how you move the level, and then you navigate yourself. I think that would be a worthwhile experience to wonder at.

This is sort of long, but trust me. I like how there is little hints here and there, like the mirror, it showed Ida is actually a crow princess (26:34) and it keeps talking about how Ida did something wrong, but at the end, it looks like the crow people forgive her, and notice, at the beginning, all the crow people look like they are yelling at her. (7:29) but then they let her walk by near the end, but at the actual end, they trust her. *The Level captions.* The second level has the caption called "Ida embarks on a quest for forgiveness" stating she must've done something wrong (to the crow people) and wants them to forgive her. (1:16) The "hidden" level in the third level has the caption called "Ida has an unexpected meeting" could be Ida trying to find a way to stop the hate and the spirit of sorts tells Ida how to gain forgiveness from the crow people unexpectedly. (2:21) The fourth level captions were not named in this one, so therefore I cannot give information of a theory. The fifth level has the caption called "Ida encounters the bothersome crow people" could be Ida walking back to the kingdom and everyone hates her still, and "bothersome" could be her not really getting used to the hate from her subjects. (7:13) The sixth level captions are called "Ida meets the totem, a friend." maybe is specifying that when Ida made everyone turn on her, the totem was the only one who didn't leave her during that time and was the only one that followed with her. (Into the water.) (11:52) The seventh level captions are called "A throne lies vacant", I think this one was pretty obvious as it signifies when Ida had to leave the throne, she goes back to the spirit because her subjects are still mad at her, and the spirit says, "Foolish princess, have you forgotten too?" maybe because Ida forgot the reason why her subjects are still mad at her as well, maybe because the king, queen, or prince forgot as well? Or maybe all of them? (16:08) The eighth level captions are called "there lie strange delights" I literally don't know what you want me to theorize on this, Gray. (19:15) The ninth level captions are called "there is nobody left to forgive us." and as the level is called "the descent" it doesn't have any good connotations any way you shape it... I assume there was a flood of sorts as the "island" Ida was standing on appeared to be a broken part of the kingdom... and when Ida goes down in the temple, there is a gray place perhaps giving Ida some memories as to what happened when she looked into the mirror and talks to the spirit as they state, "Sacred geometry was our pride, our downfall.". and "But forever will our monuments stand in this valley." Maybe Ida was the one who caused the downfall and the deaths of all her subjects and maybe even her mom or dad when Ida placed the flower on the foot of a grave and we could assume her subjects are all dead from the thousands of graves (or as it appears.) (27:55) The tenth and final level's captions are called "At journeys end what was not meant for us is all returned" maybe being symbolic of happiness or memories, as it could be "is all returned" can be Ida remembering everything that happened that she shouldn't have or Ida going through levels to finally return to everyone and gaining forgiveness. (28:20) Wait. No. *That isn't right...* "return to everyone?" but that means... *Oh god.* *WHY DID THE GRAVES LOOK LIKE HUMANS JUST LIKE IDA BEFORE THE END!? WHY DOES SHE ONLY TURN INTO A CROW PERSON AT THE END OF THE STORY??! WHY DID THEY ALL FLY INTO THE SKY?!? WHY DID THE CROW PEOPLE GET COLORED AT THE END?!??* Ladys and gentlemen... I think I got it. Ida *DIED.* The true story: Her subjects were watching over Ida as she realized what had happened to her subjects over the course of the entire game as her subjects were in a limbo (as blackened crows) as they never really hated her in the first place, only at that course of time as they blamed her for the downfall of the kingdom and that spirit might've been Ida's parent as they did say, "OUR downfall" and talked about geometry as OUR pride, and through the game, her parent was trying to tell her what happened (maybe Ida had got memory loss from it) as an attempt to say in short "If you make a new kingdom, please don't do what we had done." and the reason her subjects were yelling at Ida in the beginning was because they might've still blamed her for the downfall of the kingdom, but they forgive her as they might've realized they also wanted those geometric shapes, and the only thing that was holding their subjects and Ida's parent from leaving, was because.. they were waiting for Ida. Thank you all for reading my theory on this game, I'm sorry that it was long but now you can see what I thought of this game as a whole, I really appreciate if you made it this far so I want to know what you thought of this so if you made it this far so reply down below to share your opinion of this theory!

I know this will not be seen, and other people have done this, but I would like to explain what I'm pretty sure is the correct version of the story for people who don't understand. (WARNING: VERY long post with TL;DR) The Garden--Ida embarks on a quest for forgiveness: Ida has entered a place called Monument Valley to earn forgiveness from someone or something. Note the geometrics shape at the end of this (and every) level. Hidden Temple--Ida has an unexpected meeting: Ida meets the spirit for the first time. The cut out dialogue reads "Long have these old bones waited in darkness. How far have you wandered, silent princess? Why are you here?" The spirit seems untrusting of Ida, but also aware, as if they have met before... Water Palace--Ida discovers new ways to walk: Not much here, until we meet a spirit again. We now know what she is trying to earn forgiveness for: stealing from the spirits. The Spire--Ida encounters the bothersome crow people: There are new crow-looking creatures here. Notice how they all seem to look similar to Ida, and how they are all walking in rather ambiguous patterns. The Labyrinth--Ida meets the totem, a friend:The totem is not of much significance to this story, but he's a nice little fellow. Shame what happens to him. The Rookery--In which a throne lies vacant: Quite a pickle. People are lost without anyone to rule them, after all. But whose throne is it, and why have they disappeared? And why do the crows seem to be eyeing Ida so intently? We also meet the ghost again, this more cut dialogue: "Those who stole our sacred geometry have forgotten their true selves. Cursed to walk the monuments are they. Foolish princess, have you forgotten too?" Implying she is not the only thief here. Well, the only "people" here seem to be us and those darn crows... Also, "princess", huh? The Box--In which there lie strange delights: Nothing story much here, just cool box shenanigans. Good to see we've almost returned all the geometry! Surely the people we stole it from will be happy to know! The Descent--There is no one left to forgive us:...Oh. OH. Well, I've been calling them spirits for a reason. It seems that in between our thievery and our return, the entirely of their race... perished. Eventually, Ida makes it to a mirror, in which we see a bird with a crown reflected at us. Wait, a BIRD? So that's why the crows looked at us with such intensity. Remember that the Rookery said "in which a throne lies vacant" as well. We meet another spirit, and from what it tells us we can assume that the lack of geometry WAS the direct cause of downfall for the spirit race. The final room is a room full of gravestones...solidifying our original conclusion. Observatory-- At journey's end what was not meant for us is all returned: All the geometry has been returned, and Ida's mission is almost complete. We must channel our inner puzzle solver and return the last piece. Epilogue: As the shapes are returned, the crows have finally started to remember their purpose and glow bright again. They are no longer confined to the monuments and are free to fly away. So is Ida, the true princess of the crow-people who will now return to her throne once more. TL;DR: Ida, princess of the crow people, comes to monument Valley to return geometric shapes her kind have stolen from the people there. The people died without the geometry, turning into spirits who Ida later encounters. Since she and the crows were thieves, they are cursed to walk the monuments forever until they return everything, after which they can go free and Ida can rule over the crows once more.

got monument valley the day it came out, i never regretted it once. please try out forgotten shores and the sequel (if you're looking for other good mobile-exclusive puzzlers, i'd recommend Device6, though it might be a hassle to edit or stream)

Lore: You are Ida. You stole the geometry from the kingdom and ran away. You mother (the one in the coffin) died of grief, plunging the kingdom into an eternal state of mourning, which is why they are Crows. You return, bringing back hope as well as the geometry.

Legit I just replayed both games a two weeks ago on a car ride then you happened to play it. Cool coincidence. I've played a while ago on and off then I redid the levels a couple weeks ago.
