Particularly where you are armed with range multiplier type weapon , and the attacker is armed with CQW (Close quarters weapon; Hands, feet, knives, etc) 4 Example: You come upon someone brutally stabbing another. You are armed with a valid conceal carry permit and a pistol. You pull out your weapon and train it on the attacker. The attacker stands up and faces you with a knife. It is commonly accepted practice that you maintain distance. You have your weapon trained on an individual who has a CQW. You have the upper hand right? Not necessarily, you must maintain the advantage. The Tueller principle tells us that attacker can close 21 feet in one second. Often times the attacker without range component will appear calm, and approach in a calm manner while still maintaining the threat factor of the CQW. If attacker is within 21 feet back away to give yourself TIME to put multiple shots on target. Better yet if you are in a street, don't walk straight backwards, but instead move away and sideways; strafing if you'd like to call it that, so that you can have clear view of where your moving and still keep increasing the distance. While facing a close quarters attack, and having pistol drawn , backing into a curb or speed bump could instantly turn the tables on you. In Newt's situation ; He was already armed with a pistol, had a hostage, and Newt not knowing if he had body armor. She gained the advantage when he dropped his weapon, but lost advantage as she let him close distance in what seemed like a calm demeanor. This is why the Tueller principle is very important. They teach this to law enforcement and military.

Poor Newt. Thematically I guess you have machismo versus brutal savagery in common. But that's only part of Dredd. How would Dredd's comportment and morality affect the plot? Have to be some... Crimes and maybe the chief justice wants to sacrifice cits to avoid risk. Maybe ... Dredd gets assigned to some crappy sector house and the cits have it under seige when a smuggling operation gets compromised. Maybe throw some muties in to produce novel xenos?
