Sir, BIG BIG BIG THANKS TO YOU!!!! I just finished doing this with my Alienware m15 R2 and I could not believe my eyes on these new temperatures. COD Warzone was spiking my temps all the way to 95 and 100C while the processor was undervolted. I have the processor running normally and the temperatures are 60C while gaming and around 40C on idle. I did exactly what you did and bought the same paste you have in the video and I have not seen any overheating whatsoever. Subbed and liked your video.

Glad I could help! It's a little daunting at first but once you know what you're doing its not too bad. The screws are the main problem IMO. The fear of not getting one out is really terrifying. Congrats on your temps.👍

@@Meanpooh I actually stripped one and had to force it out with a tool. Thankfully I had a bunch of dell laptop screws laying around and I replaced the right screw. What terrified me the most doing this was the little touchpad flex cable. People should avoid removing it from the motherboard and remove it from the opposite end. I actually broke the little tab off the mobo connector (I could not express in words how careful I was being and still broke it) but I was able to repair it.

You're welcome. I got them here amzn.to/3DryMLe. It's a shame really that such a well built machine suffers from this thermal problem. Although the machine can handle the high temps without throttling I too would much prefer it to be lower. Every game I play for the most part gets a modified undervolt setting. The Alienware control center from my experience interferes with Throttlestop so I try to keep it closed and or not loaded. I can usually keep the temps pretty low while staying almost near 4.3 as seen in this video.kzbin.info/www/bejne/aKfOdmmAhs5oi5Y&ab_channel=Meanpooh Hope all goes well with the repaste.

Very informative video. Unfortunately, all the same screws stripped for me as well. Screw No. 10 in the final part got completely stripped and I could unscrew it. It's so unfortunate. My laptop has been hitting 90-100C ideal. And, it's unable to push more than 30 fps in New world because of throttling. Atleast, I got it back together and it works. Awesome video by the way. I was so close.

I was gonna do a LM repaste, but this doesn't even seem worth it LOL. Edit: Think I'll just stick to undervolting and small frequency changes to the CPU. As long as it's under 95 C I don't care enough to go through this hassle and mess up some screws. Kudos to you!
@Meanpooh
@Meanpooh 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Since replaced the screws and all is going well. Taking it apart is a job but once you do it, it’s alright. Getting the undervolt just right will pay off with most games. Here lately, undervolting is giving my machine problems and ACC uses undervolting within its software. Could be a conflict.

I have like 3 of these that need thermal pasting, they all have heat issues. I've worked with Dell but last time a tech came out he messed one up worse than it was. I not scare of doing tech stuff like this, have plenty experience on working and trouble shooting electronics but just didn't want to have to do it myself. I got my Thermal Grizzly but do I need any special tools? and those boards make me feel like I'm gonna break something, anything special you did to remove those screws that gave you problems? Great video man, perfect guide to see what I'm in store for.

The screws are very fragile. They have loctite on them, some more than others. If you accidentally strip a screw it’s going to be a bitch to get out. I had problems with 3 and managed to get them out. Going to replace them on the next repaste. I used other drivers all the way to needle nose pliers. Others have ran into the same problem, some could not remove the SSD. Good Luck.

@@Meanpooh So worked on two of my units and though the SSD screws were a little tighter than others, the real pain was dealing with a stripped screw. Number 10 on the heatsink assembly gave me issue so I used the super glue trick and used one of the fan screws to replace it. Ill replace that screw soon. Thanks for the guide, really helped. Oh I did come across one issue. I had an extra cable, tiny ribbon cable that I can't seem to find on your video. Its connected to the white connector above the let fan power connector. It's right near the end of the board on the left side as your looking at the board. It was a pain because its so tiny and has tape on it and wasn't sure how to remove it.

Have you taken a magnifying glass to see if any pins on the cable are damaged? The error you are getting is a sign of display failure. If it was working before you did the repasted then its safe to say that the problem lies at the connector. If you think it may be damaged, you can try here for a replacement www.parts-people.com/index.php?action=category&id=151&subid=1413&refine=lcd+cable Make sure nothing is inside the motherboard connector that may be causing the pins to not touch.

on a scale of 1-10, how bad would it be to not replace the stripped screws? thank you for the video, by the way! Very informative. I've put off doing this to mine for over a year, but the other day it shut off due to overheating (my fault, I had the performance set to "quiet," and forgot, then launched a game)... so it's time to face the music and re-paste like i'd planned to from the start. it was actually this very video that scared me off from doing it back then, because this is all much more complicated than my previous laptops, lol.
@Meanpooh
@Meanpooh Жыл бұрын
It's not that bad. It depends on where the screw was located. If it's around the CPU or GPU area you will want to replace that ASAP as its holding pressure down with the heat sink. If it's anywhere else where more than 3 screws are going in then 1 missing will not hurt. Until I got a replacement, I had reused the screw but just barely screwing it back in. Recently I dismantled the laptop to replace it. I've had it sitting on my desk for months. I had to do it so I could test some thermal grease on the laptop. So far it's going great but more testing is needed.

@@RobertZabulonian I had to add some pressure that’s more than usual. It also helps if you have a driver that fits perfectly inside the screw head. Having a wide handle along with added pressure works. I got most out with a small precision but the stubborn ones had to get the bigger driver.
@RobertZabulonian
@RobertZabulonian Жыл бұрын
@@Meanpooh thank you. Maybe none of the screwdriver heads I tried fit perfectly, then... I went so far as to press a finger beneath the other side of the board where the screw was so I could apply more pressure from the top, and still they won't budge. Instead, they warp and strip the screw 😬
@RobertZabulonian
@RobertZabulonian Жыл бұрын
So I went and got more screwdrivers and managed to loosen 4 of the 8 uncooperative screws. But the remaining 4 simply will not budge. I suppose I can try super glue, and if not that, then I'll have to put it back together and maybe order a stripped screw extraction kit But those are expensive and I'm uncomfortable using one on a motherboard.

So I returned my M17 R3 and picked up this M15 R3 which is MUCH better with the fan noise, the 17 inch unfortunately was just crazy overbearing you can hear it on my KZbin channel it's sad I like a bigger screen but the M15 is great, mine came with a regular 2070 and Gsync

@@Meanpooh to rich for my blood lol I got a great deal on this one from Dell outlet direct. I have been debating between keeping this one or keeping my MSI GE75 Raider with same specs. My GE75 Raider is WAY louder and only has optimus, my M15 R3 has Gsync and A MUX switch, which refresh rate did you get? If not the 300hz you probably have a mux switch which is a huge diff in performance and temperatures to check open alienware command and hit FN+F7. Such a hard toss up the majority of my time gaming is spent on quiet/silent mode due to kids etc
@Meanpooh
@Meanpooh 3 жыл бұрын
@@vidfinnx I have the 300hz panel with no Optimus. Direct connect to the graphics with poor battery. I rarely use my machine without an AC outlet nearby so its not that big of a deal. The fans on the Raider are indeed louder and easily drowns out the M15. Although its louder it's still a great machine.

@pleaseunlinkme Sorry to hear but I would unplug the battery, the AC of course and possibly the battery backup. I would then try to remove as much as possible and then try to shake it out. If its under the board you can be sure that its resting on it somewhere. Try to flip flop it left to right and vice versa. Do it slow so can try and figure out where it is.

Hey meanpooh! Alienware is out of my budget and not my most favourite gaming laptops due to the overpriced prices. Looks beautifully made and designed. I wouldn't think it would need a new thermal paste. I been doing GTA V videos lately meanpooh only story mode since I'm replaying the third time.

Nice tutorial will be useful when I change the cooling paste. But I don't think my laptop will survive this. Today the temperature is 96 degrees, everything on the laptop is turned off, Aloenware Command Center is on full speed and the temperature is still 100 degrees. Undervolt does not work, the max CPU power plan of 99% does nothing. I think I'm giving up and it's time to change my laptop, I've had it for 2 years :(

I still have my machine and I hate the ACC. Its a waste of space. I tried removing it with a fresh install and it made it worse. It's almost like the ACC is tied to the BIOS and knows when its not installed. Anyway, your machine is made to run at the temps you are getting. It will not hurt it. What you should do is use the cool setting for your fans and balanced for power. That should drop some degrees off. For good measure try to raise the rear of the machine so its not flat on the table. BTW, ACC messes with undervolting. It will change the settings but will not reflect in the app. If you undervolt, do not open ACC.

@@Meanpooh I guess I have semi handled the heating issue by setting the TPD on the CPU to 45w and the heat down to 85C. Set a fan curve for quiet to full speed from 75C and up, and set throttle stop to run at startup. As far as thermals after re-paste, CPU jumped to 100C regardless, probably because Alienware has the processors set to redline for performance...At least that's what I have read almost all the temp complaints source the issue towards. but Idle I'm between 55-60C so that's better than low to mid 70's. Thanks for the video, It helped me to disassemble and reassemble my laptop.

Hi . Where is bios battery? How can I recover bios?
@Meanpooh
@Meanpooh Жыл бұрын
While disassembling I did not see one. However I did find this. "This computer is designed without an RTC coin cell-battery. After a service incident where the system battery is disconnected, when the battery is fully discharged, or when the system is reassembled and turned on, an RTC reset cycle will occur. When an RTC Reset cycle occurs, the system turns on and off three times. An "Invalid Configuration" error message is displayed prompting you to enter the BIOS and configure the date and time. The computer starts functioning normally after setting the date and time. CAUTION Removing the battery resets the BIOS setup program’s settings to default. It is recommended that you note the BIOS setup program’s settings before removing the battery." Also this may help "Recovering the operating system When your computer is unable to boot to the operating system even after repeated attempts, it automatically starts Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery. Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery is a standalone tool that is preinstalled in all Dell computers installed with Windows operating system. It consists of tools to diagnose and troubleshoot issues that may occur before your computer boots to the operating system. It enables you to diagnose hardware issues, repair your computer, back up your files, or restore your computer to its factory state." If your BIOS is damaged or you can't get it to POST then you may have to contact DELL.

@@siyastlkbrli9418 In your BIOS make sure that the Intel Speed Shift Technology is enabled in the Advanced tab. This was disabled for me and ACC did not work correctly. This software is complete garbage IMO and I wish they would get rid of it. The last thing you could try would be to do a complete system recovery and start fresh. BTW, I tried doing a fresh Windows install without ACC and it didn't go so well.
