I bought an Alienware 17 R5 for 300$ with an CPU failure. Previous owner tought it was fried cause he smelled burnt. I still took the chance and open it myself and found a burnt mosfet which is repairable. Now it's running again. I manage to undervolted it to -0.200mw @ 3.8ghz which is cpu lottery winner. Now running at 70c instead of 99c.

If you're talking about changing intel chip to AMD .... I don't think they can do that. I heard somewhere that big companies signed contracts with intel to use their products and they probably get it for the low. intel is fine, just automatically brings up the price for any system.

Great review Dave. I have been using the R2 for roughly 8 months now and love it. If I could go back only thing I would change is from 500gb hard drive to 1TB as Call of Duty is about 250gb on its own.

I absolutely love my 2020 m17. It does get reallllllly hot, but I decided to just disable turbo(using throttle stop) on the cpu and that keeps temps much lower. I agree they should just have some ryzens in the mix because it's still too hot. You really have to tweak it too much. I didn't know that the motherboard was reversed! Thank you for showing that. I haven't taken it apart yet, but I will do a repaste at some point with some Kryonaut. Awesome video Dave!

He said it was good, not great, not perfect. Has crap thermals still and needs an AMD Cpu. These laptops are currently a waste of money! Just avoid unless you were unfortunate enough to trust that Dell finally fixed it and already bought one.

@@kylekeenan3485 Or perhaps not everyone cares about thermals (i.e. cares about performance) and just puts the fans on fullspeed and puts the headphones on. (I've got it and i would absolutely not give up performance for thermals, would not have undervolted if it was unlocked but i have the i7 10750H, chose that because i didn't need an i9 and that would've just hurt the battery life and thermals for absolutely no reason, and got 2070 super because 2080 super maxq would not have been much different... it doesn't throttle either so...) And he never said the thermals were crap, he said they were "just shy" of perfect, meaning close to/almost perfect. M15 R3 is simply the absolute best choice if you want a thin and light/portable one that looks nice (looks fitting its price) and has the best keyboard, fantastic diaplay, 32gb ram, future proof specs, competitive battery life (great if you put it on 60Hz), has lots of ports including thuderbolt 3 (and the alienware external gpu thing, which performs better, if you want an external gpu in the future), feels premium (and not generic like MSI stuff), and overall is the one that has the least flaws, best overall/the most complete and versatile gaming laptop. I've had this since it came out and i just love everything about it (i guess the only thing missing is windows hello and a numpad which i like to have, windows hello is minor to me and the numbpad would have meant too many compromises, size/battery life/portability/layout/price etc because i would've had to go for m17)

You need to care about thermals, thats the point. Bad thermals mean bad performance which at $1k is ok but when you pay $3k for a laptop and get the same performance as a $2k laptop purely because the thermals are bad, you should be dissappointed. Alienware and Razer are the two most overlypriced laptops, however atleast with Razer you get a much better performing gfx card due to the thermals! Have a google of it to see what I mean. Either way if your happy with your purchase, thats great but people need to know before they spend their money on these machines.

Michael Cicchini You can be biased all you want. All the insiders know differently especially in stocks where AMD had a huge run-up after shitting on Intel. The only reason why Intel's stock is still this high is because they are a stable company. Look at the recent tests too if you want.
