If your looking to buy: i have owned all three versions of the Alienware x14, 15, and 17. The 14 although very nice size was very loud and the fans were on full blast even in Minecraft. I also noticed my screen actually bent and wouldn’t lay flat. Maybe a faulty model? My x15 R2 is very good build and although it’s bigger than the 14 it stay much quieter and i carry it with me to class every day without much problem. I would go for the x15 over the 14 for sure unless you really care about the size. The 17 ran about the same loudness as the 15 and honestly i ended up going with the x15 over the other two. Just my experience 😅the x15 got some bad reviews but in my opinion it is the best size and the performance although maybe less than the 17 it lapped the 14. Thank you Mash you videos helped me make my decision you are very thorough and keep up the great content

Thanks for the great review! I was actually waiting for it, but because I couldn't postpone buying a new laptop anymore, I have decided to go with Lenovo Legion 7 with 12800HX and 3070 Ti due the diminishing returns of 12900HX and 3080 Ti - I used to own 2 Alienwares, but actually for roughly the same price around 3000 EUR one could get either the one that I've bought or the AW with 12700H and QHD display - knowing that AW has some thermal issues with x17 r2 (I have also experienced them on my old 17 R4 with GTX 1080), worse processor, and that it's officially isn't sold in Czech Republic (unfortunately we're way too small market for companies like Dell, Google etc.) made me confident that Lenovo is the better choice. The fact that it has smaller screen is not a big deal for me because I've got myself wonderful Alienware AW2721D display with AW510K keyboard. So far, I've been using this laptop for a few days and yeah, there are some things that could be better: like try to disassemble it to install 2nd SSD - for me it was a nightmare despite the fact that I'm more of an advanced user with iFixit complete toolbox, necessary knowledge and practice in electronics repair, lack of Windows Hello, somewhat *different* keyboard (it's not worse than on the AW, it's just different), missing mini-DP port (not relevant for everyone though) ...but even though Legion isn't perfect, it's damn close for me to be the one and I have no buyer's remorse🙂 The screen is great and good enough for some semi-pro work IMO not even mentioning media consumption. For pure gamers playing games at QHD or higher resolutions the difference between HX and H(K) processors probably isn't worth a higher price (I mean if you consider maybe similar laptops from other brands since in this situation it's clear - HX is a better processor for the same money), for those whose daily life isn't really only about the gaming and includes some CPU-intensive tasks I'm sure you'll be better with more cores (i.e. HX is a better choice for you). I would disagree with sound quality evaluation though - maybe because it's not the same to hear it through the mic in a video, maybe Alienware did something in order to improve the sound quality, but I've heard AW a couple of months ago and I'd say that Legion is better - not that it matters for me because I think all of these laptops are crap in terms of music quality😄(excluding perhaps only Macs), I only use headphones or HiFi system, but for background listening to a radio, podcast etc. sound quality of Lenovo is alright.

I was expecting the legion to be better but when playing the same track side by side the Alienware did sound slightly better though neither was amazing by any means! Just a tip on opening the Legion, I found a suction cup on the front corners with a. little pressure helped opening the clips to get my pry tool in. Still much more difficult than it needs to be though

Great comparison video, I've got the Legion 7i Gen 7 and been using it for a couple of months now. I love it, I wanted something a bit more portable then a 17 inch laptop but with 17 inch power and it's perfect. I can run it in quiet mode with no fan noise on a 100w usb c charger and never skips a beat for portable tasks. Then get home and hook it up to the 300w brick, bump it to performance and play what ever game I want. For portability and heavy gaming I don't think anything beats it currently

When I got the new power supply I sold the Alienware at a loss and purchased the Legion 7i... WOW, what a difference. The Legion has not had one issue everything has functioned perfectly. I believe Alienware has become trash in regard to quality control. I loved my first Alienware but will likely not buy the brand again after the last. Excellent reviews thanks! I have the old Legion 7i (11th gen, 3080) and it more or less has the same chassis as the new one. The primary reason I picked the Legion over the Alienware X17 is portability. The Legion has the footprint of a 15" laptop yet packs a 16" screen and that small footprint makes a massive difference when lugging it through airports. I wish Alienware would make the design of the X15/X17 slightly thicker and lose the large footprint. The secondary reason I chose the Legion was value for money in terms of warranty, they are way cheaper than Dell for the equivalent onsite warranty.
@Sachrial12 жыл бұрын
The legions only look similair, but have quit different chassies. Look at the air exhaust on the left and right side of the 2022 version. It might not look like much, but the newer models don't need to rest their weight on the exhaust covers when carried around in a backbag. Gen 2020 had reportedly some broken exhaust covers because of this design. 2021 version fixed it with better material for the covers but with 2022 model the issue is now gone completly. Which is a good thing. Also because of that, opening the legion is easier now. The new rounded corners look different (although don't have much aditional value). In my opinion it looks more professional.

I have owned many Dell laptop & PC in the past 20+ years, but never run into this issues where the problems repeat itself after resetting the power. #1) The laptop will not turn “ON” with or without the power cord connect and even with the batteries almost full. I even did a power reset by disconnecting both the batteries and power cord and which work for couple times and than will not turn “ON” again…🤦🏻♂️ #2) when the unit finally turn “ON” after multiple pushing of the power button (10-20 times) the laptop will turn “ON” but the keyboard will not work & no respond and had to use the transparent key to login instead…🤦🏻♂️ #3) The first unit I receive, the headphone jack was not working at all, windows 11 can not detect it🤦🏻♂️ Thanks for any input…

I had the Legion 7i for about a month and now have the X17 R2 (returned the Legion due to fun whine at low loads, and they had no replacement devices and zero customer service). Spot on agree on build quality easily going to the X17. But conversely the HX is crazy fast in the 7i, better webcam, and that port layout is perfect. Have to disagree on the screens though. Maybe I got unlucky, but my 7i was nowhere near 500 nits and the X17 version with 1440p is vastly brighter and just better all around with color and contrast. I still have some testing to do on the X17 (due to that second SSD with no heat sink delaying my Linux install), but initial impression is also it handles heat better, as you said esp. over the longer haul, but in my view also internally. Both really great machines. Pretty happy I ended up with the Dell though. PS - if you are in the EU, order the mechanical keyboard and save 100 euro! Crazy, but yeah... local language (German in this case) standard keyboard cost 100 euro more than international layout mechanical keyboard. It is a great keyboard. EDIT - and thanks for the video! This is just the comparison people need to see!

for the Alienware I would recommend getting an USB hub or if you use an external monitor just connect the monitor's USB output, for convenience. Dell also supplies the heatsink if you buy the extra SSD from them. That said with the new generation of Intel CPU and RTX 40xx using almost 1000W combined I doubt the next generation of gaming laptops will be real desktop replacers ... I just can't imagine the next gen of laptops venting close to 1000W of heat.

Watching this by my X17r1 and could not be more satisfied with this machine, the mechanical keyboard is just too fricking good, I even put aside my mechanical keyboard to use this laptop keyboard. Design and built quality will always be the main reasons buying Alienware X series, they just look and feel so good compared to others on the market. Unfortunately, although the speakers are sound bigger on the X17, mine have an issue that the left one keep making cracking sound when playing above 50% volume, I planning to call Dell support service to get myself a new speaker and see if that fix, hope so because some people and even the tech guy of Dell said this issue could not be fix even if you replace a new speaker, this is a major flaw of the X17 lineup that I hope Dell to fix it as soon as possible in the future.

Appreciate the videe. Question on pricing: I'm looking to get the Legion with a 3070Ti. USA pricing is around 2000$, UK pricing is currently at £2,524.49. Anyone able to give me a heads up here?
@MashITTech2 жыл бұрын
Lenovo UK pricing is always terrible. Expect to pay slightly more than the dollar now thanks to the plummeting pound. Look out for a voucher to try and reduce the price further

@patricksutfin93742 жыл бұрын
@@NVGEAR and when the 4080s come out some would advise you to wait for the 5080 or the 4080ti basically tech is always improving there will always be something better or improved next year. But if this year's model plays nearly all games in ultra at native screen resolution at 100+ fps why wait for something next year that improves this by 20fps when you won't even see a difference. To me it makes more sense to wait for a screen update. The power that this has is already overkill for 95% of the games out there.

Quick question about the specs, you said they are both spec'd with i9's but the chasis of the Alienware says it's an i7. Was it just mislabeled by Dell or is it an i7 in there?

Can't tell looking at the X17 R2 if its chassis is made from metal or just some ultra smooth plastic, as for the price tag it's coming with I'm expecting metal all around but can't seem to find any reviews that touch on this subject.

I've had a lot of laptops fail being the graphics card or motherboard from heat. I now using a cooling pad and desk fans to help keep my laptop cool. I think heat is a major problem with gaming laptops.my old Alienware has a number pad that I dnt need and lights up all the keys. so new is worse haha. and my old Alienware has Steel series speakers standard.I use a 60% separate Ducky one 2 mini Mecha. is the way to go and doesn't get warm like trying to use the laptops keyboard.

I'd really love to see Asus Rog Strix Scar 17 SE and MSI Titan Gt77 compared to Alienware X17 at this point. Asus is almost as powerful as Titan, Titan has the 4k screen. Asus's screen is quite dim, but color accurate. I am not sure I understand all the talk about premium quality built. When something feels overly luxurious, it just makes me feel uncomfortable in front of people who cannot afford this stuff. Also, it makes me uncomfortable using it, since I am worried I might break it
