Would you ever be willing to do a video for those of us who are America's 20$ per hour & under crowd- receptionists, vet help like techs & office staff, pharmacy front office, wait staff, hotel desk etc.? Chefs on staff that make us breakfast and lunch with a Barista Bar. All education paid for. 4 weeks vacation a year. 7%-15% raise every year. 15-20% Paid bonus every year. Plus company stock. Thank you for this topic. As someone who has worked in financial services where turnover is high. Job hopping is actually much better than getting a promotion. I noticed officers who were hired new for the job had less responsibility and a different learning curve than someone who was promoted to an officer from an associate position within the same department. The person who got promoted is much more valuable in my opinion because they are adept to the work environment in comparison to the officer who was hired externally and needs help to catch up and learn the nuances of the company but I don’t think the pay difference is substantial and I wouldn’t be surprised if external hires get paid more than internal employees who were promoted for the same role!

I wish I saw this video when I got my first corporate job, where stayed for 1.5 years ($60k salary). I stuck around my next role way too long (73k to 96k in 4.5 years) in exchange for exposure to in-demand skills/hope that research would "grow on me" (in fairness it is very reputable and I learned a lot, it just pays a lot less for same years of experience). I'm happy to say I just job hopped again, going to be making 120k (base) at an even more reputable & well known company. I watched a lot of your videos over the last 5 months of applying and interviewing, thanks for all the help!

I do the same. I have gotten laid off a few times under a year where the employer was over clever and expected me to put life on hold for them but they were too sneaky to be straightforward about it. My last employer has some employees who kept looking at my profile on linkedin and knew i hadn't updated my profile and never asked me why i didn't add them. Even when laidoff im still employed on paper.

In IT, contract roles last 6 to 12 months on average here in the U.S. You will not be seen as a job hopper in IT if you're doing contract roles. If you're looking for full-time roles outside of IT, then it can become a problem in the long-run.

Moving around has given me experience and the ability to learn skills I would have never gotten otherwise. However, I'm afraid at some point I may end up having to go back to my first employer and if that happens I will end up going backward significantly pay-wise. Despite the fact that I already got my job thanks to these videos, I find myself coming back here regularly anyway. Funny enough, a job hop is actually what I did. I was getting paid half of what I earn now. It took me about 2 years and a half at my last job, but it allowed me to get this new one. I changed careers to IT and in 5 years went through 7 employers as: technical support engineer, technical support engineer (different company) application manager and application support manager technical consultant devops devops & automation tech lead senior architect There is no issue with job hopping, even every 8 months, if each new position is higher (more technical, more responsibility) then the previous one. Then, you are not seen as a "job hopper", but as a "high performer" for whom the usual progression curve is just too slow :)

I allowed a job to stagnate, working for 13 years without much movement. Then in 2019 I was placed under a new supervisor and was terminated with a CAP. Wonder why if only I knew then what I know now. My next job I was laid off due to Covid and the job after that I quit for personal reasons. My last job I was laid off due to a downturn in business. I just accepted a new offer and will be starting soon. Long story short I now will be paid over $10 an hour more than the first job I was terminated from and with similar duties! If I stayed at that first job I’d be lucky if I was getting $2-$3 more per hour by this time! I only wish I knew about you back then! Job hopping definitely has its advantages!

Yeah, I've been earning 22% less based on inflation since I was hired. I found your videos just a moment ago and the one about going stagnant and staying in a job based on expecting them to give you something for loyalty and service struck a cord. I had a six figure salary which I gave up due to leaving the state to take care of my mom who had a stroke that nearly killed her. After two years of caretaking, and a pandemic, and several other heavy personal life events, my self esteem was probably at the lowest and I was fearful that no one would hire me because of my work gap. I wound up at a job making about 35k less than my prior and have not had a raise in over two years, even though they have been quiet hiring me into roles that have about 10x more responsibilities than I had when I joined. Recently, I had been thinking about other options after being contacted by a recruiter and researching that I'm being paid well below market and less than coworkers with lower education and experience. It's interesting that the algorithm suggested your stuff since I hadn't really been looking at that on KZbin for anything related to this. However, it is timely and I'm finding your insights pretty interesting. Thanks :)

Two questions with job hopping. First, why do you need multiple hops? Assuming the job duties aren't changing (much) between roles, wouldn't incremental increases only matter if the new employer knows what you made at the previous role? Second, what about a resume with a mix of contract and permanent roles? Is there a risk of short term contracts looking like job hops?

I'm ashamed it took me too long to realize this. Five years at my current job. I got my indefinite contract status after six months of working there. Pay got reduced because as part of my new compensation a certain amount of my paycheck is withheld and then every May I get it all back, plus the same amount matched by the employer and a little extra to make up for the time. That and a little contribution towards a prepaid eating out and groceries debit card. After five years of no more than 6% raises I finally make around the same as I was making in 2018. I was disgusted with myself for not being aware of this all the while simply accepting more and more responsibilities without any chance of promotion. Just getting one big paycheck per year is no longer cutting it

If you have a job be grateful you have something, even if it is not the job you want. However if one opportunity comes and you consider the factors such as Better pay Better work life balance schedule Offer of benefits Commute time More pto opportunities I say go for that company. I got a job I didn’t want but I am taking it in the meantime because I don’t know if I am getting another offer soon and that was a week ago. Another company is interviewing me that when they told me they learned about my resume I submitted a month ago. That company is offering weekends and holidays off, no overtime. Though the pay maybe less than the company I just got hired for, I’m going with a better schedule.

Job hopping sounds good on paper, and getting a higher salary is the goal, but wouldn't it be better to job hop somewhere with a union? or to make a union at the job I'm currently at? Aren't employers hoping I'll hop somewhere else, instead of starting a union? The department of labor has studies that show EVERYONES wages go up with unions. That way everyone doesn't have to keep hopping around all the time and we can have a say about our salaries, benefits, and working conditions. - would love to see "how to start a union"
@mandisaw
@mandisaw Жыл бұрын
Forming a union is much different from joining an existing one, as the "power" of your union is dependent on where you live, and how large the union itself is, particularly within your field. A brand-new union is better than nothing, but won't be as strong as an established one. Same applies to startups or contract gigs vs FT positions at established firms. The on-paper salaries can be better at the former, but the benefits are usually lacking, there's no job security, and you can't even trust that the company will exist long-term to give you references.
@mandisaw
@mandisaw Жыл бұрын
As to union tech jobs, I can speak to that - it's pretty great! ❤ I'm gov't, so we have a very strong union, with a lot of political power, and always get contract raises to keep up with inflation. Most titles are grouped into tracks, and salary bands are public, so you know where you stand, and what's needed e&e-wise to advance. Pensions, work-life balance, loads of PTO, free/cheap health insurance, etc, tho the base salary is always below-market. Have to work out for yourself if it's a good trade. In my case, it's also civil service, which means more hoops to jump through in hiring & promotion, but we can attain a tenure-like status. Basically once you have that, even if the job changes or the unit is dissolved, they still have to offer you a replacement, and match your current salary. The tech can be stagnant, and if you have a toxic mgmt team, then that would suck (transfers can help), but I just do outside projects and pitch new tech in terms of potential benefits & cost-savings, like at any other job.

This is the best video I have seen you do (I saved it). I have two software engineers that could use this video. One thing that got my attention is how you mention that an earlier employee should "strategically" move to new opportunities, given that role is marketable and that the new employer is well respected in the field. This is something that many people need help understanding for some reason. One question I have is, can't you move internally instead of moving to a different company for a role both offer? For instance, you work at company A(top 20% in the market), and you decide to move to a new department, but you get an offer to company B(much more prestigious (top 5% in the market) and a 20-30% in salary bump). However, leaving company A means leaving the comfort zone. Would you do it?

Im construction management, job hopping is considered a sin only for short stints like under a year. After a year most recruiters couldn't care less. There are companies that want people to stick around for at least 3 years but unless the employer is huge to almost huge (~1000 employees or more) its a chore to work there. I have worked at large companies early in my career and couldn't care about anything but my core duties. Deadlines were far and apart. And unpaid ot was unheard of. Work life balance the best in class. But on the flip side small to mid size companies work is piled high and work is due day after day. And you feel leaving on time is a blessing. And when you say you need more time, they are shocked you asked.

This is what I've suggested to my loved one and she has gone from making a measles 50k while holding a masters degree working from college to college to 82k+ raises. So she will easily get to 100k in no time.

Hey, thanks for the insights! I've got a question about job hopping to diversify skills. After two years as a software developer at my company, I jumped at an opportunity to work as an AI researcher (and developer) at my former university. I'm still trying to figure out if it was the right move. It seems like a unique chance to get a foothold in this field. I'd really appreciate hearing your thoughts on this. Thanks!

Hey there, fellow job hoppers and aspiring salary boosters! 🌟 Who would have thought that hopping from one job to another could be so strategic and profitable? 😄 I mean, we're like the high-flying acrobats of the corporate world, jumping from opportunity to opportunity with grace and precision! 💼💃 But hey, let's not forget the golden rule: hop wisely, my friends! 🐰 Three hops might be our magic number before we turn into kangaroos with resumes, bouncing our way through interviews! 🦘 And don't forget the art of timing, folks! Like synchronized swimmers, we must dive into the job market just at the right moment to reach that glorious top salary range! 🏊‍♀💰 Now, I do admit, there's always a tiny risk of being labeled a 'job hopper,' but fear not! We shall conquer this challenge by becoming masters of resume jujitsu and interview kung fu! 🥋✨ So let's embrace this hopping adventure, my fellow salary seekers, and remember: with the right strategy and a sprinkle of luck, we'll be hopping our way to success and financial delight! 💸💃

So what would be the salary bands look like? Junior - 1-3 years of experience Mid 4+ years of experience Senior 6+ years of experience Or would there be more salary bands than that? Also, do you have a video explaining how to do market research on salary ?

@@Isaiah094 I think you’re right. I think some companies may consider junior 2 years and others under 3. Whatever it is very close but I think up to 2 yrs should be considered junior.

@@vinceod2440 I got 4 years expirience. I was a Sr. 3 years in. No way anyone with 3 years expirience should be a Jr. shit, even two years is too long. If you’re gonna get stuck anywhere get stuck at regular/med level but not Jr.

Now there's one thing that comes to my mind here right now: Many jobs in my field list as requirement to have worked with a certain technology before. The issue is, my current place doesn't use it because it's pretty expensive and we'd not use it regularly enough, so I'd go somewhere where I can learn and practice using that technology - which isn't easy since all the places that list working with it as one of your tasks also expect you to already be familiar and have years of practice with it. And from people who started in a company like that and heard about the process in that case I've heard, they'd usually rather take someone who already is used to that technology than take someone who wants to learn about it and get experience n stuff. So how does one start there, since it's not something where I could just take like an online or even offline course to get the experience in any way?

Nah, note in your resume that you changed titles/responsibilities. That's just normal career growth. A promotion within the same org is actually a plus - means someone trusted you & liked your work enough to step you up.

How can you plan job hopping if the industry is so volatile? One year your LinkedIn inbox is exploding with opportunities you want to take so much, but you're also happy where you are. Next year you're laid off, competing with thousands of laid-off industry aces who dwarf you in every way, yet even they struggle to find a job themselves. You can hop on another job to be laid off 3 months later. You can stay on your job and be laid off 3 months later. How can you plan a hop when your never know when you lose the ground you're standing on?

None of this makes any sense. Regardless of what your motivations may be, job hopping is job hopping. There is no way to sugarcoat it. When I see a resume of someone who has had 5 jobs in 7 years, or even 2 jobs in 3 years, it goes straight into the recycle bin. Job hopping is vile behavior and, as a hiring manager, I have no respect for people who do this.

That's the rub - length of employment isn't a protected class, and folks have no idea if the hiring mgr is like Brian or like you. It's a gamble, which is fine, but folks should understand that going in.
