I feel you (& your husband). 6 years ago, I was laid off around the time my father passed away. I don't know what mess your husband's ex company is going through, but companies who lay off workers usually have upper management issues not handled maturely & fairly (i.e. upper bosses & their huge salaries are protected first, lower-rank executives get axed out). This usually results in loss of revenue incomes for companies, eventually. I hope your husband will find refuge in rebuilding/upgrading/expanding his knowledge. It'll take time ro invest in some new skillset, but it will pay off & lead to better things than where you are right now. It is the route I took, and it got me a better-paying job I never had in my long career.

I feel his pain. I was once laid off 3 days after my grandfather passed. Sad part is that they had planned to let me go the day of, but obviously I wasn't going into the office at that point. To be honest, I was still in a bit of shock when I was let go, so I suppose I didn't feel it as much as I would've under normal circumstances. I do wish this channel had been around back then. but I'm glad I can look at this now and realize that in hindsight, I did a lot of the Right Things.

This is very sad, I hope everything goes well. When this stuff happens am I the only one who thinks about all the sappy stories on the news during COVID when the whole world was saying we need to care for each other ? I haven't seen society being nicer to each other. I hope you receive twice the amount in your household this summer than what he had with the company that laid your husband off.

I wonder about situations like mine in this environment. I was fired for a contested sexual harassment after 3 months of waiting after documentation and stories were taken. Working for this major corporation, I had a friend who took his first job after retirement from military who quit 2 months prior and he said get out bc of the hostile environment towards men as well as blocking us from learning needed training. I was shocked and went through all the things you mentioned, even enlisted a Life coach to help me get out of the doldrums and make a plan. So I'm past the emotion, and I just need a job. I am not planning for a step up or a class in resume writing, I seem to do well with my personal communication skills and am sure to find something if I can get my foot in the door. even though I was in mgmt. and was making good enough money, this comes as a surprise, and I didn't have an emergency plan.

I was laid off in December 2022 and, 30 minutes ago, just signed an excellent job offer. TWO THINGS THAT HELPED ME, other than Bryan's videos: 1. SPEND MONEY ON A RESUME COACH. My previous company gave me a convoluted job title that I used after layoff, and that title only confused prospective employers. The resume coach convinced me to "correct" the title to something more universal. Then I used job postings for that type of position as a "reverse rubric" so I could restructure my resume and LinkedIn/Indeed profiles. My batting average for conversations and interviews went way up after making those changes. 2. GET IN TOUCH WITH LOCAL RECRUITERS - while I ended up with a W2 position, I was open to working contracts as W2 or 1099. This got me more conversations and interviews, and it helped me to hone my message. I was able to craft and succinctly talk about scenarios as well as formulating thoughtful questions back to the interviewer.

I experienced this as well years ago. One person at my site needed to be let go and it ended up being me because my coworker and the boss were besties before my boss was promoted to being the boss. She was promoted before I started, so I didn't know of this going into the job. I was the hardest worker and even got our sales numbers up with every new hire class because I tried new ideas and kept working to find out what was the best motivation. That site closed about two years after my layoff due to poor performance. Weird how they were an up and coming site before I was laid off. Lol

I was laid off on a Wednesday afternoon, and had all the reactions you described; shock, disbelief, sadness, anger. I was so emotionally drained that I told my wife I needed to take the rest of the week off to process. Sadly, she wasn't that supportive though and wanted me to update my resume, linkedin and start job hunting on the same day. I had to push back that I couldn't and it was a sore point for a few days. People need to understand the mental well being of the person being laid off and how decompressing and processing is essential.

Oh man… I was just laid off 3 weeks ago (the day I tried to come back from having Covid) after working with a company for 8 years and I immediately began applying to jobs. I’m just now hearing back from them (2-3 weeks later), but I’m looking back at the job descriptions like “Oh dang… Shouldn’t have applied for that position…” Lol. It doesn’t feel right not working and my lease ends in 2 months, so I immediately panicked. I had a panic attack as soon as they told me I was laid off. Horrible timing and I feel totally backstabbed by my boss. She kept telling me my job was secure, meanwhile, she was plotting to get rid of me. I feel that it’s weird and it says a lot about a company when they don’t give a heads up.

I was laid off late last year and the final Zoom call was just like you mentioned. To be completely honest, I was expecting this since the company had prior layoffs. For a few months after my buddies were laid off, I had to do a lot of more work because they were no longer backfilling the people they laid off and I was the only one who knew the tech we were using. I couldn’t even sleep at night for weeks knowing there there was so much to do. When I saw the “Confidential” email, I knew EXACTLY what it was. At the end of the call, they said good luck to me, and I said “good luck to you too”, and ended the call. I saved some important documents on my computer and closed it; didn’t bother attending the rest of the meetings that day. I was upset, but very happy at the same time. I did want to quit, but I didn’t have another job lined up and wouldn’t have been given severance, so I rode the train for as long as I could while doing minimal work. Now I’ve been in the job market since. At least I can sleep at night and my mental health has improved.

I've gone several months between jobs several times since Y2K. Networking: it's not what you know, it's who knows what you can do and thinks of you first when they need that. Career plan: what's that? Interviewing: the only way I know how to practice is to do it, and I'm not doing it when I'm working. So, how?

If your layoff was NOT performance based, I would recommend asking one of your supervisors (that you trust) if you can use them as a reference. I had the unfortunate experience of being laid off less than a year after hire due to the aftermath of SVB’s downfall. I felt a lot more confident going into interviews explaining that I was laid not due to performance, and telling recruiters upfront that I had a reference that will happily verify that. Actually found a higher paying job less than a month later!

Unemployment benefits in some states are excellent. The max in Connecticut is $703 per week for 26 weeks. In Massachusetts it's $1,015 per week for 26 weeks. Florida has by far the worst UI benefits in the country, maxing out at $275 per week and only lasting up to 12 weeks. COBRA is way too expensive. If your state participates in the health insurance marketplace exchange you can find a decent plan for under $400 a month.

Florida's unemployment is exactly the same as Alabama. The cost of living in these states are technically lower (well, at least Alabama is), but they still have not kept up with the cost of living. When I was laid off at the start of 2022, I was really happy I didn't have a car note at the time and that I still had one final week of pay given to me, or else I would've been hurting, especially as I was still recovering from moving into my apartment just a few months prior.

I received severance, but was forced to take it or I'd be fired due to "performance issues." I wasn't even given time to look over the documents and, with a bit of pushback, had to convince my ex-boss to allow me to clean out my desk before leaving.

I can't understand how someone can play with people's lives in this fashion. Impossible to not panic. Unable to sleep at night, I blindly believed company won't layoffs since there wasn't any before. Had a call last week, 5 min call ended my 5 yrs career. I can't sleep, can't actively participate in anything. Performance was excellent 4.5/5 for past 1.5 yrs. Company used system policy violation termination as an alternative to lay off. Saw a whole bunch of employees with same reason and no prior warnings were provided.

I’ve never been fired or laid off yet but I know it’s common for people to experience it so it doesn’t exempt me from experiencing it in the future so it’s good to be prepared so I would accept it more easily when it happens. You are absolutely correct about it working out in the end. I know many people who got laid off and were able to find jobs. @@censoredeveryday3320 I was actually on the edge of being fired from my first couple of jobs but that helped me learn to screen managers more wisely during interview since being a fit seems to be more important than the actual skills a worker can contribute to the company. The problem with corporate is there is not much oversight and there is a level of autonomous discretion the manager has. From my experience there is a subjectiveness with how managers perceive their workers. I’ve experienced extremes where managers were either disappointed in my performance or was exceedingly satisfied with my performance. I’m currently leaning at the latter but it was because I inquired about my current managers expectations during the interview process to see if it was a right fit for me.

Great content. I would encourage more content on problems with outplacement services hired by the previous employer. It was clear this outplacement service was just going through the motions and was not competent. This one company used unskilled contractors. I used their services for one week and realized they were a waste of time and - as mentioned in the video - some of their advice was simply incorrect. At the end of their "services" I received a questionnaire reviewing their performance. It was strange. The questions focused on whether I felt better about my previous employer and whether I had filed any EEOC charge against them. Get money in lieu of a service.

I feel somewhat trapped because huge layoffs are coming my way. I may or may not get axed, but I work for a ruthless company which does not dole out letters of recommendation. Why? Because they charge a ridiculous sum for prospective employers to verify/confirm your work history. This scares off potential employers because they often are not willing to pay. I know this because several previous coworkers had this issue.

I've never been laid off. I had the enviable position of being the only one who could maintain a software product. There were times I would call upper management stupid in meetings for not following my strong recommendations. One of those recommendations was to hire my replacement... because retirement was in sight. I had upper management walking on eggshells. Things came to a head in 2021 when my (single) brother suffered a stroke. The extreme stress resulted in an event that my boss's boss wanted to resolve by way of a performance improvement plan. I was not in the mood to accept that level of insubordination. Upon hearing this, I announced my immediate (for all intents and purposes) retirement. This left the company with no one to maintain the software. The company hired a replacement... who lasted six months. The company then downgraded the software from an actual product to an interim solution. I'm sure it has cost them hundreds of thousands of dollars. On top of that, the stock price has imploded. The fun thing about it was that the company exacted revenge on itself. My plan was for a smooth transition. The idiots shot themselves in the foot. ;-)

I’m still a bit in shock. 6 years at the same company through the good and the hard times where there wasn’t even a COL increase. I am just shocked. I actually thought I was safe after the first three rounds (over two years) of layoffs, and the facts that I had learned so many different departments and was always ready to do more for them. It is the worst place I ever worked I try to just mind my own business and work but will have 3 random people come to where I'm at to tell me about how so and so is or isn't doing something all day. A guy in my department just complains non stop all day that today when we where downstacking a pallet I finally snapped and told him to "shut up and work!". First time I ever snapped like that at work😂 It's so bad even our HR guy is a jerk. Its rumored they are going to move us to overnight instead of morning for stocking. For COBRA, if you sign up within 60 days, the coverage can be retroactive. I won't sign up right away, but if I get into a situation where I need medical coverage, then I sign up and the benefit is retroactive to my termination date and covers my situation. If at the end of 60 days, I don't need it, then I sign up for another cheaper plan instead. No reason to not take advantage of this "free" period.

One other point of Layoffs, is the company you work for, has failed getting the contracts they need for the size of their staff. Most companies will look at who makes the large salaries, are they in the Department with the contract shortage. If so, Dept. heads with a knowledgeable staff are the first for the layoffs. So, it's not a failure of the employee, but the company heads. The company I worked for (I'm now retired) did this very process.
