I'm Russian and Tarasova's take is nothing unusual in Russia. When I was a teenager, my mum would always say 'before you do anything, think about how it will impact us, your parents'. I personally think that's not an effective way to stop egocentric teenagers from doing anything, but it is a very common take in Russia. It's considered normal for the needs and feelings of the parents to be more important than the needs and feelings of the child.
@user-jy8zb2wc8l
@user-jy8zb2wc8l 8 ай бұрын
I'm not at all from Russia or similar cultures, but I wanted to comment that this kind of comment would be one thing coming from parents who shows that they would think of their child's needs and the impacts on the child themselves, versus parents who never considered or demonstrated such a thing. If parents don't show it themselves, then the child wouldn't see or understand the point in such a statement.

I was thinking about Trusova in last olympics, while listening how Alina run away. It's crazy what this sport takes in Russia. For your whole life you give up your childhood, school, friends, free time, maybe even family, a chance to be a (somewhat) normal teenager etc. When you say you're not happy with your life, your coach and parents ask, if you want to be olympic champion. Of course you do so you keep pushing. And then the day comes (if it ever comes) and then you land "only" on silver like Trusova. Wouldn't you respond the way she did? I think I would.
@lizzie7654
@lizzie7654 8 ай бұрын
Agree, I think also Trusova was perhaps told that if she did that number of quads then she'd win, that she felt her coach had not given her the routine that had the best chance of winning because she'd done everything the coach said to get there but then she didn't get was 'promised' so also that feeling of betrayal as well I think. We don't know what Eteri had said ahead of time either.

@@loolool963the problem wasn’t the free skate. She couldn’t land 3A in her short program. Probably had that thinking she’d be going against Valieva and needed it to win. If she landed something else clean she’d be the champion against Anna.

In the end they don't get anything out of it besides mental issues, damaged body and empty accolades. They sacrifice the joys of childhood for endless training and they don't learn the necessary life skills to prepare them for adulthood. So while having some specialized skills, emotionally and mentally they are going to be behind their peers, starting an adult life while their career peak is already behind them. It's just sick all around.

Yes, they definitely did some work covering up her attempt to run. They caught her so they - what? - sent her back to the COACH?! She should be sent HOME. To her FAMILY. One day, she’ll be able to speak out. It’s completely abusive, it’s parental alienation and alienation from support to control. This is classic abuse. It’s likely her family are afraid to speak out bc obviously the coach has the police and everybody else working for HER motives complicit in kidnapping and returning her to her KIDNAPPER when she tried to escape. It’s child exploitation. Her life and mind and wellbeing -aren’t under threat- oh yeah?? They’re ALL UNDER THREAT! I hope she is able to survive this extreme abuse. There’s no way she can be raised in such circumstances by such psychopaths and come out perfectly healthy. She tried to rebel and heal her emotional trauma from being kept from her mother - that’s why her performance was affected. She suffered abandonment and naturally clung to her mother when she was finally able to. Or maybe her mother was gaining control from them and they blamed her performance as excuse to separate her from her own mother. Smh 🤦🏼‍♀️ that’s NOT A VALID REASON! Wake tf UP! Why would a runaway case go to a prosecutor’s office?? “Take responsibility for her actions”? Okay, so she can take responsibility and GO HOME! Since y’know, they’re saying she’s old enough, right?? Thank you for at least speaking the truth. This is infuriating!

Sport is a powerful tool russian government is using to prove to their people that russians are a superior nation, to keep the imperial ideas alive and support for their regime. There are reasons why they had (and maybe still have) a government sponsored doping programe. This fanatic aim for athleticism is a huge part of their cultural identity. Families honestly believe they are helping their children by basicly sacrificing their sanity and health to this sport, because success would bring massive glory to them. They do not take into an account mental health because russian society still hold a huge stigma over it and to their belief a good child is an obediant child, even if they must cause trauma to force them to obey. Only they like to call it discipline. The narrative that their athlete suffers so badly that they run away from their coach does not support the idea of the glorious russian figure skaters. They will never admit that they break their children to sustain their shallow ideals.

The things that Zhenya said are actually and sadly what a lot of Russians think. I'm from Georgia and we have quite the complicated relationship with Russia, however many people have families there and vice versa. We aren't friendly with Russia but we do have a few things in common. These are just some things that I've noticed and experienced as a Georgian who grew up in a Russian-Georgian household: 1. As soon as you hit double digits or sometimes even as soon as you start 1st Grade you are supposed to be more responsible and know right from wrong because as it has been stated, by this point you are not a "small child" anymore and can think for yourself. 2. A lot of people(mostly people who are 30 or older) will change their opinion about whether you are a child or not in their eyes at that moment. If you are late to get home and forget to notify your parents then they'll scold you and say that you are supposed to know better, to start acting and be responsible. However, if you even think about disagreeing with them about something they say is a fact(even if it isn't), then you're a child who doesn't know anything. 3. Parents and generally any adult know best. Their word is law. That's it. No questions are allowed. 4. I've noticed that parents are very either very overprotective(usually with girls) or absolutely do not give a shit about what their child does(usually with boys). They can also be super controlling and for them that's completely normal(since that's how they were raised as well) and they even expect you to be thankful, grateful and always helpful to them because they did so much for you. Ex. Eteri Tutberidze, the momma bear of momma bears is Georgian, or at least half-Georgian. 5. A lot of people are very close minded. For example they hate the LGBTQ community with a passion and once, honest to god, my mom deadass looked at me in the eyes in front of 20 people at a dinner table and said "If you ever come out as *one of them* I swear on my mother and children that I will disown you"......yeah so. I could probably go on and on about this and there might be some stuff that I missed cuz it's almost midnight here and I'm very tired but these were the first things that I thought of. I'll edit this later if I think of anything else. But I gotta say that this situation is so sad and I hope that somehow she gets out of that toxic situation and will be okay mentally, physically and emotionally. Do remember that my experiences are not the same as *anyone* else and that I know that these things can happen in any household, country, etc. this doesn't just apply to Georgia and Russia.

Speaking more or less traditional families, yeap, as a Russian can confirm. Also, some things are a bit exaggerated. I'm openly bi and everyone's quite supportive about it. as a Polish, I with all my heart agree and relate. Especially with "adults know best and their word is a law", even when I tried to convince my parents for something it was just "no, it's the end of disgussion", 11-17 is a weird period, because they let you walk to the school and back home by yourself, or cook dinner, or take responsibility, once you ask if you can stay up later than 10pm it's "you're a child you've got to listen to me".

@@lisakovalenko9003 I agree that it depends on the family. Some families are just more supportive than others and it's not just in Russia or Georgia. My family situation may be completely different from anyone else. And I also don't think I worded this well because I don't have a problem with russians, quite the contrary, I have a lot of friends and family members who are russian and everyone in my family(mom,dad,cousins,aunts,grandparents,etc.) speaks Russian and it is very important to learn and understand the language, people and traditions for us. So I'm sorry if anything I said came out wrong or offensive. I also tend to ramble soo apologies for that as well :>

It's very confusing for a child and I absolutely hate it. Like pls make up your mind already, am I a child or an adult. Valisa & valeriy dated a while ago (officially for only 3 months), and I bet valisa broke it off. It's probably really hard for him to be holding her like this all day, working with her on the ice all day, when he can't be with her. Just a side note. In Russia, there are 2 types of “passport”. The type that we use here in the US as well if we are going out of the country, and another passport to be used basically like a form of ID. So instead of having an ID card like we do here, they have an in-country “passport”. It’s not uncommon for people to carry that passport with them, as it’s basically their ID. I think its was a lame ass excuse to get out of skating with her, because he was more focused on his girlfriend of 2 months than his skating partner of 5 years. Que loco todo 😳 I am glad that Alina is safe "physically" but we'll see what decisions they make from now on because obviously she is NOT well but there are many things that disturb me in this news: - Her apology sounds as forced "my beloved trainer blabla" as in those horror movies where they kidnap you and make you record a video for your relatives saying you're fine while you have a gun pointed at your head - The second is how surprisingly quickly they opened a search for her body???? In just a few hours???? maybe they internally had more information than we know (as if there was a possibility that she had it in her mind to take her own life?) which I find even more morbid and alarming and sinister... -And evgenia's comment (as much as I love her) saying she is 16 and old enough to take the consequences..mmm I understand the concern but then let's remember that kamila was her age and didn't take the consequences in the doping case... But oh, what's the difference? Evgenia and kamila had a great supportive family and social environment and Alina has NO ONE!!!!! That is what is really worrying. This poor girl is alone, she has no one she trusts to talk to, no support... It is devastating😢😢😢💔💔💔

This reminded me of something that happened here in Australia that’s very tragic. If anybody can find it I highly recommend watching Harley & Katya. It’s a heartbreaking but compelling documentary about a pair of figure skaters in Australia. Katya was from Russia and she had to live with her coaches here and didn’t know English very well. Just a heads up, it can be triggering to watch.

I don't think she had a plan. it seemed like a spur of the moment "i need to get away from here" running away. No plan, a bag, some cash, a phone, a tablet and a passport. Which are (except for the cash maybe) normal things to bring if you are planning to spend an entire day at the ice rink. The fact that she spend the night on some stairs and then tried to get some sleep at the cinema? this girl didn't know where to go but was very sure where she did not want to be. Again I don't think she planned it and she did dissappear and even if you plan to run away and people understand that it's still normal for ppl to worry and panick. Also about your opinion on Medvedeva's statement, I think this is also a cultural difference. I don't think Medvedeva's statement is outrageous? She said her opinion isn't important and she doen't know everything and she can't imagine. But x y and z. I think that's fair

Now surely The beautiful bubble has burst…and someone has said he has another girlfriend of two months.,,Eek…who probably doesn’t want him skating with Vassilia. The contract is insane, and sad too. But perhaps those kisses and hugs were about control ( as someone❤ else has said) It’s just dumb- founding that they can split..Ive loved watching them- They restore one’s faith in love- we shall be bereft…

Totally agree Paola, Alina ran away, and agree that Medvedeva seemed to be arguing both sides of the fence to not upset anybody....she is very wrong saying that Alina "is responsible for her own actions" - the adults are the ones who have put Alina in this situation - THEY are responsible! It's a similar argument Medvedeva made for the eating disorders being an athletes responsibility when they retire, nothing to do with the Adults who coach and train them and encourage dangerous attitudes to food during such an important stage of development ie. before and during adolescence....nothing to do with parents who allow it either, apparently! The reactions of Tarasova and Yagudin show the culture in Russia (at least in the sport) is to blame the child.

My theory is his mom started something. Like she made a comment about Vasilisa having two mom's meaning the coach and her own mother and I feel like she got in Valeriy's head and convinced him that they were going to drop him because Vasilisa was getting extra attention. Or this is a stunt to boost her career and maybe he just wanted to leave but since it's a hard sport to leave without being villianized or injured they came up with this.

I kind of feel the same about Valeriy's mom getting in his head. It's because Valeriy's behavior reminds me so much of my brother lol Even the way he talks is the same. Never having a stable relationship because he's "needy" when he's just craving for the unconditional love he's never got as a child, which is way more toxic than just being needy. I wonder if his mother has the "I'll be on your side and protect you at all cost as long as you're being successful, but I'll keep being blind about your mental health" type of energy as well lol If that's the case, he might as well has depression and his helicopter mother is the one who made the contract. But it's just my imagination and Valeriy may have completely different situation from my brother and mother. Maybe he's just a gold digger and made the contract himself. We'll never know.

I followed Alina since last year. She seemed for me as a one of the most talented junior so far. And when I watched an interview with her and her coach I thought that Sofia Fedchenko is very supportive. At least more supportive than Eteri. I was shocked when I found out what happened. All this situation is weird. Especially a relationship with Alinas’ mother. Why she gave Alina to her coach? She doesn’t seem to support this girl passion. It’s weird for me to sent a child which is 9 years old to a non familiar women. And to another city. I pray that she will find her way in fs but it will be hard especially with all the hate and such.

not just figure skating...every high level sport is toxic for children as for grown adults also...i have very big concerns about alina and her coach and her family also..and im pretty sure she wanted to run away...but...she is a 16 year old girl...she is minor...she cant just run away and hide...i hope she would understand that until she is 18 she needs someone she can trust....she need to find a relative or someone who can protect her....and see a psychologist. there is a whole documentary about her in russian...and things she say herself are very concerning (about her mum..her family..and falling in love with her coach).... i dont think we should blame her...but her actions are strange...hope she will be ok...she could just call her parents and say she had an argument..and she will stay with a friend for a couple of days to think...doesnt mean she should tell where she is...but her knowing everyone is looking for her..and thinking she commited suiside or was murdered and robbed...its not an action she should be proud of...its a behaviour that screams she wanted attention...dont idealise her please...

It’s horrible and disgusting,. I speak from experience. Yeah - my parents ‘sent me away’ to school for a supposed ‘better start’ in life. When I was hating it and abused there they said ‘think of the sacrifices we are making’ and ‘you should be grateful we are doing this for you’ and ‘do you know how many other children would want your opportunities’ I was told I was ungrateful and that it was all for my own good… exactly what happens now in Russia. ‘Oh it’s teenagers… they are ungrateful…’ or ‘the parents interfere - they think they know best… I am the coach, not them, they pay me for results, I get results, their child becomes famous, I don’t…’. I can’t see this changing in Russia (or, to be fair, many other countries).

Medvedeva: After her defeat at the olympics, she changes her coach. Eteri criticizes Medvedeva for ghosting and betraying her. Medvedeva victimizes herself by saying Eteri always blames children (even though she was an 18 year-old adult when she changed her coach). Also Medvedeva: Blames 16 year-old Gorbacheva for having a mental breakdown and wanting to get away from a toxic situation. Also Medvedeva: Blames 15 year-old Zagitova for losing the olympic gold and shouts at her coach for not keeping Alina at the junior category for 1 more year. Medvedeva's trolls and fanatic supporters keep bullying 15-year-old Zagitova. Medvedeva (being a fully grown adult) never defends Zagitova and never tells her trolls to leave the child alone. Guess Medvedeva learned a lot from her Aunt Eteri about blaming children.

@@olgasmirnova4588 Can you tell which part is a lie? After her transfer to Brian Orser, Medvedeva liked a comment criticizing Tutberidze for always blaming children, a screenshot of which is still available online. Her comments about Gorbacheva, (in which she called her irresponsible even though the child was clearly having a difficult time) are also available online. Eteri Tutberidze herself said in her interview on Channel 1 that Medvedeva yelled at her for not keeping Zagitova in the junior category for another year, which is also still available online. You can look at the comments written on figure skating blogs and social media accounts in 2018 to see how Medvedeva fans brutally attacked and bullied the then 15-year-old Zagitova, which are still available online. And Medvedeva never defended the child against her fanatic supporters. If you think there is a translation error in any of this information, can you correct it?

I'm with you completely. The public that doesn't understand is also brainwashed. There are many ways a person can be quite mature and responsible at even a young age, but none of that matters here, and further it doesn't matter because the REAL ISSUE AT HAND is an adult taking advantage of a child. Nobody is responsible for that except the abuser.

you misunderstood alina’s family/coaches situation. there’s alina’s interview where she explains why she is staying with her coach and not her parents. her parents are to blame, they don’t care about her and about her skating career. this is very common in russia when parents have a child but don’t even care about them or their interests. kids live with their grandparents/uncles/aunts/godparents as their own parents don’t want to take care of them..

While yes what he is doing is horrible we also have to take it easy on him he is only 19 years old and we all make mistakes when younger. But it wasn't just him being controlling apparently there's more to it from his side. The coach wasn't really looking at them as a duo and just focusing/giving all her attention to Vasilisa, so yes what he is doing is stupid but there is more to it than that Valeriy's mom wrote a letter about it that explains his side of the story too, that is really worth reading.

so Alina Gorbacheva situation, from the perspective of Eatern European, running away among teens is not as common, so in my opinion when Police got the first call they might have automatically claciffy it as kiddnapping [with psycho level fans like that one dude almost set Eteri's ice rink on fire], it's no surprising, even if police didn't clacify it as kiddnaping at first - the media would, because "kiddnapping of a Russian junior champion" would be hotter for the news station and online newspapers than "yeah, she ran away herself" which then would make public ask "why" and that "why" is what probably what some higher ranking officials do not want the public to care about, because overwise that would force them to make change in the sport like changing the age gaps for juniors or eliminating minors from competitions of national level (which would eliminate junior category) OR (yes another or) focus on providing the safer healthy for the psyche space in compettition... which nah, not gonna happen, russians love blood and angsty competitions too much to let that part go.

From what I heard opening a case for murder in such situations in Russian does not indicate that they actually consider the situation that level of dangerous, they just do not have enough legal base to use some resourses like requesting data from cameras if they suspect "just" child runaway so they simply fake level of danger on paper in the situation and work like this. Again, I do not have any expertise in this, it's just what I heard.

The coaches needed to bring a therapist in for this 17 and 19 year old so they continued the amazing momentum they created which we all watched after a horrible pandemic so they coud remain a team. These are terrible teenage fights all based on emotions that are possibly ruining what they had created. She didnt seem to be understanding to his issues because she is to young for that pressure so she broke his heart a year ago, he admits depression over it and now that so much time has passed and a new girl is in his life he's become bitter and thats where the contract came in. A therapist could come in an help them realize they are being childish and it will hurt their careers. I personally feel the five year intimate connection they created they somehow will realize this and it will someday bring them back together. They just need to grow up.
