Hey guys, I realized I didn't go over the difference between getting a Rail Pass or individual tickets, but to be honest I didn't find the Rail Passes to be worth it unless you are traveling to many different destinations in a short period of time. There are calculators on the JR website so you can check if it is worth it for you. Here are the official links: Tickets Individually: smart-ex.jp/en/lp/app/ Rail Passes: www.jreast.co.jp/multi/en/pass/ japanrailpass.net/en/

Only good if you visit tons of places on a short period of time. I calculated, traveling from Tokyo to Kawazu to Nagoya to Kyoto to Osaka and back to Tokyo; going to all these places and buying City Metro passes for each city was still SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper than buying a rail pass.

Hello Alina, Hope your trip back to Canada was safe and pleasant. You got to love those trains in Japan. Efficient and Clean and most of all, on time. They are on a level that most cities around the world can't match. Harriet and I have been to Japan many times. We can't say enough about how well train service works. Alina, you are spot on with how to travel by train .We travel the same way. You are right, it's not worth getting a Rail Pass unless you're travelling to multiple cities for a short period of time. We have experienced all classes. Travelling by train is half the fun of getting there. As always, Alina, we love you for all that you do to keep us informed and entertained. ❤❤❤ Sending you much Love and Affection from Richmond, Va. Harriet, Jim and Yuki

Ohayoo and thanks Alina for the video. To visit Japan and not travel by Shinkansen is the ultimate mistake ! It's a total experience on its own, such a pleasure to ride these fast trains, on time all the time, spotless, comfortable. For me the only difference between Economy seats and Greeen class is that in the latter there are less seats so it's also quieter, not that Economy carriages are loud (except maybe during school holidays or the Golden week) but there are just more travellers there. To buy a ekiben prior boarding is a great idea for the huge choice in station shops but those sold on board are good too. I love the way train staff bow when entering or leaving a car. So Japanese ! Nihon ga daisuki desu !! 🗼⛩🎌

Hi Alina, great video about shinkansen. You are right, the shinkansen experience is at an other level. Also the precision of how the trains are on schedule and the location of the doors at the station are always exactly at the marks on the platform. You are right, not all of the staff speaks English. My personal experience at Okayama station was, the staff had some kind of device do speak to in English, which translated to Japanese. Best regards, Ralf

One strange idea from me: Please make a video with sounds of Tokyo! I miss them so much and there is no way I can remember all these things. I want to hear the traffic lights sounds - these little birds while people are crossing, the different songs of each metro station and also the incredible voices announcing the shinkansen stops. There is no other place in the world like Japan and Tokyo! Please do such video or at least a short!

I took my first bullet train in Taiwan and quite bluntly it was like nothing I had ever experienced. So fast, so comfortable, so amazing. Then, when I was in Japan I was predisposed to take the Shinkansen and learned that although Taiwan had a Japanese firm design, and build their system . Japan's was step above. On my first trip I just bought individual tickets because we weren't taking as many trains. My second trip I had a JR pass because the whole trip was based on going to multiple cities via train. I never experience Grand class, but green class was exceptional. Course I am comparing that to Via Rail cattle class (not real name) that is on older rolling stock, slow, mostly late and not a great economic deal in many cases. Once you figure out the system, you can easily find where your car doors are as their painted on the platform color coded and the trains all have names. The train name can be important sometimes trains are one minute apart stopping or not stopping at all stations can confuse you. In one case as we got to the platform a Shinkansen rolled in and it was like two or three minutes before time so we got on and found our reserved seats and train departed. The conductor came down aisle and looked at us funny. When he looked at our tickets we were in the correct seat, but wrong train, and this train didn't stop at our destination. Luckily the next stop we could get off and get on the correct train which was literally a minute behind the one we were on. That's how I learned that Japanese words I didn't understand on tickets were actually train names. As the train we had been on left the station at one end, our train was entering the station at the other end. I haven't travelled on the train since luggage rules came into place but on some cars there was spots for large bags behind the last seat row that you now need to reserved rather than first come, first get like it used to be. For most trips under four hours the Shinkansen beats flying as time difference overall trip is negligible and the comfort and scenery at two to three hundred kilometers an hour is worth it. The prices on JR passes is going up markedly in October of 2023, so it's import depending on how long your staying and amount of travelling via JR you're doing to compare whether a pass will still be the best deal. It will no longer be a insta purchase. Ekiben purchased at the station stalls are amazing and you definitely want want to buy at a bigger stall for greatest choice. Everything Alina said about Shinkansen travel I echo, it makes travel a dream.

You should do a review of VIA Rail from Toronto to Montreal! You could of course fly into Dorval, but where’s the fun in that? The Gare Nord station if memory serves me right, is underground in the centre of the city. I stayed at the time in Laval but the metro to all parts of the city was fast, convenient and affordable. VIA isn’t on a par with Japan but on an island like Montreal you definitely need the metro to get around.

Hi Alina! I enjoyed your experience with the Shinkansen Bullet Train and your overview of train travel in Japan. I look forward to your forthcoming review of the Via Rail system. As a native Montrealer, I was a very frequent traveler on the Turbo between Montreal and Toronto, but that was decades ago, and things have changed substantially. I also moved from Montreal to Saskatoon via train, but that was much more a slow scenic ride.

Sadly the Yen is tanking and JR is jacking up prices to the point that it's basically a stick up from October 1. I was keen to take the Shinkansens all over Japan but the new pass prices mean a hire car might even make more sense. I am still keen to get a few trips in by Shinkansen.

@AlinaMcleod5 ай бұрын
@@joshuaglassman7558 I have Russian heritage so I wanted to visit some places where my relatives lived and it is just one of the most epic train journeys in the world. Overall it was incredible!
Cautionary Tale, I traveled between Shin Osaka & Hiroshima, in a reserved car. I placed my camera case & tripod bag in the overhead tray above me, the tray has no locker or ribs so luggage can be easily slid backwards. When I arrived in Hiroshima I discovered that my tripod bag had been stolen. Not misplaced or collected by someone else but stolen. The cars do have CCTV, but as mush I pleaded with Police & JR, it never happened. I can only assume that the CCTV footage is only used in accidents or domestic terrorism. On this particular ride the train had 2 stops, Kobe was one of them. I suspect that the person probably stole it their. So, never relax, even in Japan. I will always book a Green car from now on.

Business class smells like a rich uncle's old age, so I recommend economy class.
I've been watching your videos lately of your trips to Indonesia, Thailand, Japan, etc. Why no trips to China, Hong Kong, Macau? If you think the Shinkansen is great in Japan, you'll be surprised the bullet trains in China are faster, newer, cheaper and more comfortable. Take a trip to China and you will be surprise, enlighten, and enjoyable. Guarantee. Of course I am biased since I am Chinese but living in America. I've been to China many times, speak the language and the food there is really hot, spicy, and cheap. Good luck. Always enjoyed your videos.
