Watching this back like 15 years later and seeing the explosion on the bridge just hits way harder as an adult and understanding exactly what Kurama did when taking away everything from his own daughter because he wanted to keep her alive. And such a cruel way to end it all, but I really hope Mariko finds happiness with her parents in the afterlife.

I know that this show isn’t the greatest: the art can be strange at times, the doom and gloom, comedy, and more mature content don’t always land well nor well connect with the general audience, and the characters can be weak or feel unreal at times. But this scene with Mariko… Every word she said to her father, all her hopes and dreams up until this meeting she has been waiting for for literally her entire life- all met by a gun barrel pointed at her by the very father she had wished for so long to see. The shock on her face, the realization as she began to speak again. One last review of everything she wished for, all to turn into pain and despair as she wails her misery as the hurt and abused child she truly is, not the heartless monster everyone expected and built her up to be. It is… a lot to deal with for an adult, let alone for a child as small and young as her. Being born the way she was was never her fault, but she was always treated as a monster first anyway by all but her true mother who she never knew about or met. It’s heartbreaking to know the brief moment of the acceptance she craved for so long was all she had and ever will know. The only solace I can truly take from this is that she will not suffer anymore and is together with her family…
