The "Elfenlied" german poem fits perfectly with the overall theme of the anime. An elf believes he's being invited to some sort of wedding due to a light. The villagers are yelling "Elf", so the Elf believed he was invited. The elf wakes up from a state of stupor from his sleep, thinking he was invited. But "eleven" and "elf" in German sound about the same, and the villagers were just calling out the time. The poem is ended with the elf being hit by a rock and "Cuckoo! Cuckoo!". (I don't think it's a coincidence that Lucy's horns protruding from her skull resembles that of an elf's ears) In the first episode, Lucy sees the light (gate opening). Lucy is also depicted as "sleepy" in the first episode when she slaughters the soldiers. When the sniper bullet hits her helmet and leaves her injured and washed up at the beach with a split personality between Lucy and Nyu, I believe that's the "Cuckoo! Cuckoo!" part of the poem. "Lilium" means Lily in Latin, and "eleison" means purity (Lily of purity). Kohta gave the music box titled Lilium to Lucy when he was a child, and throughout the anime she constantly hums the song as a reminder of her "purity". I don't think the Dicolonii in the story were biologically programmed to kill, but Lucy was made to believe that humanity was her enemy (but that was proven by Nana, who I don't think killed anyone). So in that sense, I think Lucy is pure. In some scenes, she showed more humanity than humans themselves. When she was called a monster by the three boys who killed the dog she cared for, she says "the ones who aren't human are you". And in that context, it really makes you question what the definition of being human is. I personally liked the anime because it was minimally based on a short German poem, but the overall theme stands strong. People fear those who are different, and you could argue people are *afraid* of being the different ones. We're essentially taught to be the same people and treat those who are different like trash. As quoted by Lucy, "aren't we all monsters inside?" I also believe that in the song "Blessed be the man who resists temptation... shall receive the crown of life" is a reference to Kohta, since he never gave up on his friendship/love with Lucy despite human nature to alienate those who are different, and hence "crown of life", because Lucy did not kill him.

There have been a lot of covers of this song. But none of them are nearly as good as the original. This Japanese singer just adds so much raw sad emotion that no one else can capture. She's able to sing it with the sadness you'd expect Lucy to feel once she remembers what she's done to Kouta and especially in light of what he's done for her. And I loved Elfin Lied. What a story. I cried for Lucy and Kouta when they remembered everything of their past together.

Since the day I finished the anime series, I could not listen to this masterpiece at all. It just made my stomach twist in a knot every time I would hear it, and made me want to cry my eyes out. Knowing the story of the series, and also having been through some tough times myself, I developed a serious aversion to it. Today I decided to listen to the song at least ten times, until the knot in my stomach, and the tears in my eyes disappeared completely. I'm glad to say it worked, and I am fully capable of listening to this song again, and I might just re-watch the series! Poor Lucy....... Seriously, when you first see the anime, you think she's just evil. But, once you learn more about her past, you realize that HUMANS are the ones that drove her to kill. They took away the some of her only friends. Aiko, who died saving her life, was one of her best friends. The pup she befriended, killed by her bullies (they deserved that violent death, Lucy. You did good) are both gone. After a while, she just becomes the misunderstood protagonist. Lilium will always be a haunting song, from a great series.

Although I've always liked the song, I feel obligated to say that the Latin text used isn't perfect. Aside from the obvious Japanese pronunciation of some vowels, like 'u', there are some textual errors too. I do not know if they originate with the creators, or with the many variations on the internet, but looking both at the Latin and the lines from the original Bible and hymn texts, the errors are as following: 'quoniqm': this should be 'quoniam' 'probates': 'probatus' 'accipient': 'accipiet' 'kyerie': 'kyrie' 'benigma': 'benigna' (2x) 'o castitas lilium': 'o castitatis lilium'. These are the errors I encounter online. Sometimes one of the words is corrected (like 'benigna', in this video) but most errors are in the original recording. I suppose that the creators made some mistakes, like copying 'quoniam' as 'quoniqm', because they didn't know the Latin very well, which lead to the singer pronouncing it like 'quonicum'.

I've just rewatched Elfen Lied and this song is just an epic masterpiece. It gives me chills and break my heart in pieces. When Lilium plays at the end of the last episode I shed a tear. This little melody, when they meet as children, it's so powerful. I watched this Anime when I was a bit too young and couldn't see what my adult eyes have seen this time. Now, despite the violence of every kind, I see the real depths of what this Anime tells us. I'm so heartbroken but admirative. "Elfen Lied" deserves its recognition and fame. I love it very much. Every character is amazingly well built (except Yuka i'm sorry her actings are bad in my opinion, i don't think her ways and her behavior toward Kota is rentable.) Lucy (or Nyu) of course, Nana, Mayu, Kota, even Kurama have real motivations, real depths and reasons. The virus of the Disclonius make them act this way an I even find Mariko acts justified. Don't get me wrong, okay she is sadistic but so was Lucy as a little child after realizing how human hated her. But Mariko was just a baby who got locked in a dark room with her demons. No wonder she became crazy. The story totally justify her actings and I really love Mariko story. In short - I totally recommand this Anime. Just make sure your heart is well prepared and warned, not only for the physic violence, but also for all the psychology around this powerful story!

I just finished the anime today. Started it about a day ago, I heard this song on Twitter and ended up here and decided to watch it on a whim. I heard of the show before, but I didn't know what I was getting myself into. This song and the intro just brings up a bottomless sorrow out of me, I'm not sure if I should even be this sad. My life hasn't been horrible. But I just can't turn the song off.

This is a story I wrote while listening this Pov: You opened your eyes, you find yourself in a dark place You try to find the way out, you suddenly hear this playing from a distance You follow this voice, as you walk the voice started getting louder and louder As you are following the voice you see a ray of light, with a sense of relief you walk towards it As you enter this light, you find yourself standing in front of your funeral You see people crying and asking God to give "you" back You see your friends and family, you try to touch your best friend As you touched his shoulder you were able to hear his thoughts "Haha~ , glad he died he was better for nothing" You touched your brother, "Thank God he died, now i am the rightful owner of all the inheritance" You are confused, broken and lost, "Why, people who were the closest to me were all just wolf's in sheep's skin" With a sense of betrayal and grief, you try to walk away but you suddenly touch your mother "What have I done, the police think he died from a car crash but what if they find out I was the one who crashed his car" With a feeling of distrust, you develop a thirt for revenge You started getting flashbacks of your life "Was my whole life a lie, a masquerade" "God what was the purpose of my life, is this how its supposed to end, you lied that everything happens for a reason, what the reason for all this, what did i do to deserve this" As you were questioning God's judgment, you hear a soothing voice: "Everything has a reason behind it~" You started feeling dizzy and you blacked out You wake up, like you been asleep for a long time, Your brother comes up to you "Wake up breakfast is ready" You started remembering everything that happened to your in that dream like state, you now made up your mind to seek revenge 10 years later... You are convicted for Genocide and murder of your family It's the day of your execution, you are asked what your last words are You answered: "Everything happens for a reason" You died... Now again you find yourself in that dark place but now you don't hear anything, it's just a deep silence As you are standing there confused, you see a figure standing in the distance You asked it where you are, it answered "You are where nothing lies, a place where those who denied God's judgment stay" "But I did what God told me to do" You explained everything that happened "And when I was given a second chance I took it" The figure asked: "What did the God tell you" He said "Eve-" "Everything things happens for a reason" -The figure answered "Yes exactly that, you sound just like him" -You replied With a smirk on its face the figure asked: "What did you do when he said that" You replied: "I killed my family and friends" The figure inquired: "Why" You replied with confidence: "Because they were fake and wanted only bad for me, they were going to betray me" The figure answered: "is that so.." Am i the only one who sees a perfect hymn for Earth in this? i mean yeah its from a show but the lyrics just reflect human nature and our history and beliefs so beautifully. "O how sacred, how serene, how benevolent, O lily of purity!" The Lily in itself reflects Earth, and "Lord, fire divine, have mercy" reflects how she is plagued by war, disease and famine all throughout her history, now united in our modern world to the sound of this beautiful song. On top of that interpretation, it's just a hauntingly beautiful piece from a great show
