I appreciate the reminder that even a light blanket can compress a down bag, making it lose insulative power. For those of us without your experience, it's easy to overthink one thing (moisture management) at the expense of another (warmth). Winter isn't the time to be learning by trial and error, so thanks for these videos!

I had a great sleep at -23f in a WM Kodiak inside a synthetic Halite Overbag. I was toasty warm. I can’t say the down seemed compressed at all.

@@putrid_swamp_juice Thanks for that info. I just got a lightweight 50F synthetic quilt to put over my -20F down bag but haven't tried it yet. Time to take it out and see.

If you can experiment nearby, or even in the back yard if it's cold enough, it's fun to discover what works and doesn't.

I also have used 0degree Fahrenheit down bag inside a very large synthetic outer bag. I used a vapor barrier from WM in the down bag to control the moisture and keep the down dry. I was down to I believe -30F in a van at Arapaho Basin, Colorado in the 1970s. I don’t think quilts and suits can replace a hooded sleeping bag. I think a full mummy bag has the same effect as a mitten and keeps the body warm in a much more complete way than suits or quilts. Now I use a long 20 degree Feathered Friends bag with lots of stuffing room at the bottom to keep essentials from freezing. I don’t go out in the extreme cold the way I used to but in sub freezing I still use a vapor barrier in my down bag. It isn’t the most comfortable thing to sleep in but with some polyester long johns it is ok and I always sleep well.

Good info. Thanks. Question: i recently camped on Mazama Ridge on Mt Rainier. Pretty warm just under 20 F. I have an Exped down mat (older version). In the morning, there was quite a bit of water under my sleeping pad. No thermarest ensolite just the Exped down mat. Why was there water underneath my pad? How do i prevent it? Thanks Rick

They should make a sleeping bag jacket and pants combo 😅

Look up the Eddie Bauer downclime combo, it looks cool, but not sure of the practicality
