Dear Sewing Friends, in this video I would love to take you along as we talk about different serger tips and tricks to build your confidence. I know some tips might seem small or maybe it feels like they won't make a difference, but I always think about how small of a step is basting (in sewing/pattern drafting) and how big of a difference it can make in a final outcome. Sometimes small steps lead to great results!

Miss Alisa, God is good all the time! I have had a Brother 1034DX (exactly the machine you're demonstrating) for well over a year. I haven't dared even tried to use it because I was so confused as to the correct knobs settings, tension, everything. It has set, with it's cover on, in my sewing room, while I've worked around it with fear and trepidation of even bumping into it. Now here you are teaching me what I need to know to overcome my fear! 💙 🌹 🙏 🙏 Thank you for showing me what to do!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉

One of the things I really love about your videos is you use machines that most of us use. The reasonable priced machines rather than the ones that cost a arm & leg. I have this exact serger (from Walmart) . I also have the same sewing machine you use in your videos. You keep it so real! Thank you!

Thank you! So glad l found you! I used to have a top of the line,top brand serger, but my home burned down and l lost everything ten years ago. Never was able to replace my several sewing machines and such a nice serger... My sister found me an old but working serger at a yard sale and gave it to me. Several years later, when she passed away, l was given her serger- but it doesn’t thread easily and certainly doesn’t have that extra far left seam that l so loved. Doing rolled hems was a favorite on my tip top serger was so fun and satisfying. Sadly, now I have so darn much trouble threading the loopers on this one and couldn’t do a rolled hem to save my life. I wish l had a teacher, l would take lessons. ❤I’m 76 and have arthritis, old eyes, too. Please, do you have any advice to help me? Threading it literally took me a week and l kid you not. Tears were involved. So frustrating. I even used yellow, green, read and blue cones of thread to make it easier for me to understand. It is heartache. Sewing has always been a big part of my life since l was four years old…

handy video, Can you do a video on serging with stretch fabrics and when it's necessary to use wooly nylon thread? Been sewing for decades but only got a serger a few years back and still haven't really ran much stretchy stuff through it. Critter content is always welcome , lovely little puddy.

I use a makeup brush to clean my serger. Your paint brush is a good idea though. The makeup brush is smaller and easier for me to store. I need to purchase a latch hook such as you showed. What a great idea. One thing I have learned is that every machine has unique tools that help you succeed. The latch hook would be one of those for a serger that I would not use on my sewing machines or cover stitch machine.

Such a great video Alisa, thank you! I have not done a lot of stretch sewing with my serger as yet apart from a couple of t shirts and dresses from t shirt material with moderate stretch. At the moment I am attempting to make a turtle neck skivvy with super stretchy jersey type fabric. Grrrrrr! The shoulder seams worked fine because I used stabilising ribbon. I have now pinned the sleeves into armholes in readiness but thought I would practice first with some leftover fabric, placing the 2 layers together. so glad I did because I have made a real mess of it. The layers will not stay together no matter what I do and the fabric will not stay level under the presser foot and I am unable to control it. I have decided I will sew it with my sewing machine and do a google search for a possible remedy. I am thinking jersey fabric just won't work. I do not have tis problem when sewing woven fabrics. At the moment I am not in love with my serger, but no doubt it is me, the operator!!!🐾🥰

Hi Elisa, I like you videos and even for a professionel tailor there is something to learn 😊 A tip for you, though.. when you need to change the thread, cut the thread just above the cone and tie the new thread to the previous and pull the thread right through all the loops inside the machine. You may open the tension-plates a little, by pressing a tweezer in between till the knot is passed. For the upper thread you will have to take it out of the needles. Once the new thread is in place, you can cut the old off above the knots. Re-thread the needles 😊

Hello there and thanks for the tip :) I have known this for quite some time and even tried it way back when and it never works for me (but might work well for others, we all have to find what works for us, right? :) ), it just makes it easier and faster for me to rethread the serger as it is really not that difficult. Takes less than 1 minute :)

This is the worst serger. I had two and returned both. I even had professional help. I then bought a Baby Lock Victory which has Automatic tension, Air threading and I absolutely love it. I was able to work it from day one! Buy cheap, get cheap as with the Brother 1034DX. The Baby Lock Victory is more money but wow so easy to operate. It makes my sewing much more enjoyable.

Wow - some great ideas here & I especially love the idea of a journal recording particular aspects of each garment made/pattern used/etc. I came late to using serger & mine is currently out of use as the timing is off despite new needles😢 (the needles and looper are making contact) - have you got a video/are you able to do a video on addressing serger timing issues 🙏 - thanks!❤
@ThoughtfulCreativity
@ThoughtfulCreativity Жыл бұрын
Oh no, if the timings is off - gotta take it to the repair shop. I had timing off on my other serger (accidentally went over a metal zipper stopper) and the only way to fix it was to bring it to the specialist, otherwise you can probably do more damage by trying to fix it. That is my advice, so as always - do what is right for you.

I'm just getting back into sewing after decades off. I'm enjoying your videos! Question... I really just want to be able to hem pants, jeans, knits, etc for my family. I'm not looking to make any garments from scratch. If I were to only buy one machine, do you think I can get away with just a 4 thread serger or do you recommend an actual sewing machine? I love the clean edges that the serger does automatically. Thanks for your input and wonderful videos!
@ThoughtfulCreativity
@ThoughtfulCreativity 10 ай бұрын
I would buy a sewing machine and not serger for tasks like these, because you are probably looking at small repairs and maybe fixing a zipper here and there, darning a hole and with serger small more delicate repairs are almost impossible. This weekend i have another video go up and I will show my new sewing machine (it is not too simple and not too fancy) and along with that some great deals on other sewing machines, for those who are in the market. And you will see what mine can do as well, so that way you can determine what is that you need in your toolbox :) I hope this helps :)

I somehow broke a needle in my brother 1034hd… I obviously knew it broke. I whipped out the manual… changed it out… painfully Re threaded my serger… and it’s missing something… I must have Re threaded this machine 40 times… starting from step one every single time…. … … then we were moving and I never was able to use it again. Fast forward 1.5 years, a renovation, flood and renovation later were unpacking and settling in. Im going to use these tips and a few more I got from you on another Serger video to moving tension to 0 to rethread and hopefully that will resolve the problem otherwise my basically new server has to go to a shop!
@ThoughtfulCreativity
@ThoughtfulCreativity 5 ай бұрын
Laurie, hello there! Oh, so sorry to hear about your troubles :( you know, do try other tips and tricks, but it might be that your serger timing is off, then it probably has to go into the shop. It happened to me once, I broke a needle sewing over a zipper (by accident) and the impact threw off the timing of the serger, meaning the sequence and the timing at which all of the elements have to do their job - the loopers and the needles, and therefore it wasn't forming the loops/chain. To the naked eye all looked as normal, but from what I understand it only takes a little to disturb the whole system. After the shop fixed it - all worked well. Maybe it came with the warranty, by any chance?

@@ThoughtfulCreativity I have not seen it done that way. When you are doing it at the end that’s when you flip it over but when you’re doing it from the beginning you do not flip it over. You’re supposed to pull the chain out have the needle in your fabric and start sewing Also the other videos I have seen for hiding the chain at the end. You’re supposed to stitch off the fabric maybe by one or two stitches, lift your presser foot and then you are supposed to disengage the chain then flip it over, of course put your presser foot down and sew down a few inches and then chain off
