Anita, you have the most soothing and clear voice when you are instructing. I wish all American ladies had that quality. What I appreciated so much about this video was that you used a fabric with a very contrasting color between the Right Side and the Wrong side. I’m a beginner and have recently taken three 3 sewing classes at my local community college’s continuing education department for a 4 class certification, each a semester long, and none of the teachers would use such a fabric that made it very clear what the Right Side, the Wrong Side, the Back, and the Front were as they were demonstrating their sewing when teaching how to make a knit t-shirt, dress shirt, and a pair of dress trousers. I’m dumbfounded that they didn’t, ‘cause that simple consideration would have made the classes so much easier. Thank you!

This is by far one of THE BEST TUTORIALS I have ever watched. It is SIMPLE, CLEAR, COMPLETE with great explanations for "WHY?", which is so helpful to those of us who need to know, in order to clearly understand. The length of the video is perfect and doesn't contain lots of EXTRA talk, information that can sometimes confuse a newbie to the serger. I will watch EVERY sewing tutorial you make, now! From one instructor (in another field) to another...you are a fantastic teacher. You don't distract with a complete explanation of something like WHY the collar provides structure for the shirt, but you make time to explain that the stretch must be done to give structure. It means you can lead your more advanced students to draw their own conclusions without overwhelming those who are just starting. That's masterful!

I love this Serger Lesson! I think most of us have a fair idea of how to assemble and sew a bodice and sleeves, and neckband. You my dear, are giving me the confidence to learn to do all these things on a Serger because you beautifully and clearly show us how, to handle the fabric with this beast! ie Stop right before the hump and do a little magic. Stretch elastic just that much before sewing. Making sure that hemlines will be flush with the cutter/guild. A lot of scary stuff. Whew! You certainly took the fear out of handling this Filly! Anita, I discovered this video a year ago when COVID shut the schools down. As a substitute teacher I suddenly found myself with time on my hands. I had jumped back into sewing dresses for charity (Dress a Girl Around the World) and used my 20 yr old Baby Lock Elite to finish the seams. I decided to start sewing garments for myself and that’s when I found you. I was struggling today with a neckband on a top and remembered that you had this fabulous video. I’ve referenced this several times over the year as I have gone from sewing knits to wovens and back to knits. I just wanted to say thank you again for this video and I do hope you are doing well. ❤️❤️ Greetings from Portland Oregon.

Years ago, I had taken a "Stretch & Sew" class. You use the same marking system as they taught, and the stretching part too. Very good class. Thank you. The serger and knits go together supremely. I just wish sewing was as popular as it use to be so that more fabrics were available locally. To buy anything other than cotton fabrics for quilting, there is only the option of on-line purchases. I miss those fabric stores big time! I hope to find more classes by you , Anita. You have a good understanding and knowledge how to professionally sew garmets. Another lost art/skill.

Hi Nancy. So awesome to hear that the marking system is used by others. Yeah, online purchases seem to be the popular thing to do since resources aren't as readily available as they were years ago. I really like to feel the fabric before purchasing. Thank you for your compliments.

Anita, I just discovered you. Thank you for your instruction. I have been sewing all of my life, but I am always wanting to learn new stuff especially from young people. Allow me to compliment you: you are so professional and a very clear and thorough instructor. Looking forward to more vids.

Loving your videos teaching us how to use and sew on the serger. I was intrigued how to sew the hem as I usually go back and do it on my sewing machine. You hav a lovely calm voice with clear instructions you give your viewers lots of confidence. Going to look for more of yours. Thank you .

I would like to thank you for this video. I have been holding off with knits because of the unknown. This video gave me incentive to try. I made a toddler dress.

Oh Sherri, how exciting! Congratulations on finishing your first knit project on the serger. I'm so glad to know that this video was helpful. Have fun getting more comfortable working with knits.

Thanks for creating this tutorial Anita. I just finished my first garment on a serger by following along to it. The comment about how the neckband needs to be stretched to the neckline saved me, as I was about to sew on a too big neckband, which, like you remarked, would have produced a really bad result. I made a few mistakes along the way, but all in all, the top turned out nice after I fixed the mistakes.

Anita, you are one of the best sewing instructors I’ve ever watched! I am an experienced seamstress but I love watching you and picking up new and different techniques that I can use. I bought a Babylock Soprano a year ago and am in love with that machine. I also have my Mom’s Singer Featherweight that she bought in 1937 that I learned to sew on! Do you or have you ever done a video that shows what your sewing area looks like? I am in the process at 70 years of age of changing my sewing room around right down to painting.
@AnitabyDesign5 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much Marilyn! OMGosh, you have a treasure in the 1937 Singer. No, I don't have a video of my sewing studio because I haven't decorated it yet. When we moved to this house over two years ago, we were remodeling the downstairs and never made it upstairs because my husband became ill. Once I get it decorated, I will certainly share. I love my Soprano too. I'm planning to resume the tutorials for that machine soon too.

I love how you actually is showed how to handle the fabric on each step of the pattern specially with the hem. But how to ease the sleeve to the size of the armhole it is just perfection. I did learn with your video how to sew an invisible zipper and it was perfect on the first try. I am not exactly a novice but not experienced either. With your videos we all can improve, regardless of our level of knowledge. Thank you so much for taking the time to actually show how to sew.

Save yourself the threading of a needle by using a thin crochet hook ….. insert it under the threads, put the end thread over the hook and pull it through a far as you wish ….ta da …..easy peasy…… you’re welcome😇. Great video …I have Pfaff serger-overlocker coverstitch combined…… uses two to five threads…..makes life so easy !

Thank you for your tip. Glad you enjoy it. I have the Baby Lock Evolution Serger/Coverstitch combo. It's an awesome machine. I also have the new Baby Lock Euphoria Coverstitch. Now sewing life is AMAZING! No more switching back and forth from serger to coverstitch. I would never go back t a combo machine. I hardly ever used my Evolution as a coverstitch. I'm glad you love yours. Not for me. 😂

I came across your chanel quite by chance last week when looking at a quilt video. I have had a serger for about 10 years and only use it for adjusting bed linen. Seeing your video has inspired me to have a go at the Burda T shirt. Your way of teaching is so through. Thank you so very much, and bless you for being so inspiring in these very difficult times. Needless to say I have subscribed to your chanel.

I learned several years ago that when you have a serged join and you need to fold in half as you are doing with the neckband.snip half way along and half way through the serged stitch, then fold one part one way and the other half the other way, they then lay flatter.

I've 'saved' your video to make sure I can find it again when I come to do a t-shirt. Thank you for being such an excellent teacher, the detail was perfect, and you are a brilliant teacher, who shows how to deal with issues, at just the right speed to take it all in. Am just about to buy a serger (though in the UK we call them overlockers), and now feel happy to resize some over large t-shirts I already own, and didn't dare fiddle with on my normal machine :).

Hi Anita - Thank you so much for this series. I was unable to leave a comment as I may have submitted it prior to writing my comment - is this may invalidate my entry but I hope not. This is what I think is really excellent about this serger - the fact that there is a fabric guide. That has got to help garment sewing and make it useful for more that simply finishing seams.
