I love Alison's introduction, as it verbalizes what I have known all my life: songs producing melancholy can and should be enjoyed without stigma. I have sat with tears in my eyes listening to this song and many others, especially the saddest song of all (Vern Gosdin's "Chiseled In Stone") and rather than being depressed when it was over, I felt recommitted to embrace and cater to the ones I love while there is still opportunity - which is the final message of Vern's song.

Beautiful song performed in an inimitable way by Alison Krauss. This song is really written for her. She has the unique ability to convey a complete picture of the situation with her voice and through the movement in her voice she can portray every emotion and sensation. The sentence "I'm just a whisper of smoke" is a good example of this: you actually see a plume of smoke in the abandoned house. Truly the most beautiful voice on the planet.

I don't pick up the mail, I don't pick up the phone, I don't answer the door, I just soon be alone I don't keep this place up, I just keep the lights down, I don't live in these rooms, I just rattled around I'm just a ghost in this house, I'm just shadow upon these walls, As quietly as a mouse, I haunt these halls, I'm just a whisper of smoke, I'm all that's left of two hearts on fire, That once burned out of control, You took my body and soul, I'm just a ghost in this house I don't care if it rains, I don't care if it's clear, I don't mind stayin' near, There's another ghost here, He sits down in your chair, And he shines with your light, And he lays down his head, On your pillow at night I'm just a ghost in this house, I'm just a shadow upon these walls, I'm living proof of the damage heartbreak does, I'm just a whisper of smoke, I'm all that's left of two hearts on fire, That once burned out of control, You took my body and soul, I'm just a ghost in this house That once burned out of control, You took my body and soul, I'm just a ghost in this house

I am the only one in my house who likes Bluegrass, and it is not popular enough in the Dallas Texas area for a radio station to play it. An influential friend of mine has established a Foundation that lets qualified children borrow bluegrass instruments, with the hope that they will learn to play and fall in love with the music, so that it won't die out.

Dang...what's all this quibbling over dobro/resophonic guitars?
@SidsCardShop
@SidsCardShop 7 жыл бұрын
James Moore: I made what I thought was a witty comment and somebody blew up over it. Basically, referring to all resophonic/resonator guitars as Dobros is like referring to all cars as Fords. I'm sure that if Bill Ford, Jr. heard someone refer to a Yugo as a Ford, he would be unhappy about it, and I suspect that Gibson president David Berryman is unhappy with people indiscriminately calling all resophonic/resonator guitars "Dobros," seeing as how Gibson bought the name "Dobro." When you see "Dobro" appearing in proper print format, there will be a capital R inside a circle following the word. That means only Gibson can legally use the word in connection with products they manufacture. Please accept that I wrote this to give you an honest, factual answer, and not as an attempt to be a smart aleck. Let the quibbling cease! :-) Now please listen to how a resophonic guitar should sound, as played by a 15-time "Dobro Player of the Year" (ironic, right?) Rob Ickes sells a signature guitar, but is careful in referring to them as "resophonic guitars." kzbin.info/www/bejne/oJKzqHuhrKhgr7M

@SidsCardShop

Glad you liked it. If you are up for another sad song, my pick for saddest is Vern Gosdin (who was known in the country field as "The Voice") singing "Chiseled In Stone." It is different from this one in that the story utilizes the loss of one man to turn around the life of another. If you are not familiar with Vern, get a handkerchief or box of tissues before you listen. He had a unique method of phrasing and note bending that made him perfect for sad songs. FYI, back in his heyday, couples married for life, so a lot of popular country songs were about death - also including the deaths of parents, as family ties were very strong. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qYXVgX2set-grbM

I came here to reactivate comments, and noticed the one from Trigonotarbida, to which KZbin is not allowing me to reply after 4 years. So, Trig, if you're still out there, I just want to explain that the reason I said it might not be proper to call Jerry Douglas's handmade resonator guitars "Dobro", is because of this fact I copied from Wikipedia: "Gibson Guitar Corporation acquired the Dobro trademark[1] in 1994. Although the name Dobro is generically associated with the single-inverted-cone design, Gibson has announced that it would defend its right to exclusively use the name." It's kind of like the way everyone says "Kleenex" instead of "tissue", disregarding the fact that Kimberly-Clark owns the name "Kleenex", but other companies make tissues.

Of course, there's a box right here beside a carton of Cokes (that's really Pepsi-Cola) on top of the Frigidaire. Sometimes people don't really own what they claim, and U.S. District Judge George King has made it possible for all the popular restaurants to sing the traditional "Happy Birthday" song to customers instead of making up their own stylized versions, if they choose. Here's a good article about it: www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3663194/Judge-approves-settlement-Happy-Birthday-copyright-case.html

Robert Simpson: How did the discussion distract you from enjoying the song? Music appreciation is highly subjective, so I won't dispute what you said about Jerry, but I will point out that Rob Ickes has won more awards for the "dobro" than any other player. Check me on that. Just for you, here's one of my videos that has been languishing for views for 7 years: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y4m8en6hes6jo6M And here's one I personally recorded of Rob Ickes playing solo: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gpTRmHufacaHadE

Raymond Hailey: Noble thoughts from the heart. At 79, I can attest that true love never dies, and our heart-breaking losses mold us into who God wants us to be. Although Jesus was (and is) the Son of God, the act of dying on a cross was necessary to make Him our Savior - the One from whom all true love flows. He will comfort you now if you ask Him - right now - wherever you are.
