This channel deserves 100x more views. The only concise and right-to-the-point KZbin channel on Anthropology. If more people studied anthropology, we would see less ignorance and racism in the world. Have you thought of doing videos on certain anthropologists, like Levi-Strauss our Geertz? Great video!

Thank you Colton! Hopefully with time, more and more people will learn about the importance of anthropology. And yes I have! Do you think people would be interested in that? Thanks again!

@@AliviaBrown Franz Boas, Bronislaw Malinowski, Ruth Benedict, DEFINITELY Margaret Mead, Claude Levi-Strauss, Alfred Radcliffe-Brown, Clifford Geertz, and maybe French Structuralism, Diffusionism. Super Organic theory was crazy but interesting. Lol Sorry for the long-winded answer.

Yes! The are THE anthropological figures! I'll try to do a video on one of these in the near future and see how people respond! Putting this list in my notes, thanks Colton!

This was a great job and I just wanted to add a metaphor/example for you others who find this page to think thru the distinction between social and cultural: culture is the game of basketball, social is the NBA. Culture is the game itself, social is the institutions and interactions that allow the game to be played.

Ideas and technology developing in parallel in different countries is incredibly common in science and technology. It's nice to learn it happens in anthropology too!

Yes exactly! All of these phenomena remind me of a concept in biological anthropology called "convergent evolution." Reaching similar/the same conclusions through unrelated paths! And thank you for sharing the tech side, I didn't even consider that!

Everyone is so caught up in our ever evolving and growing world that we forget to take the time and look around, our origin, our roots, where civilization even started?? That's who we are and after watching these video's, it really made me understand the importance of knowing one another and the world and society that we live in today

Hey Alivia, thanks for the explanations. Have you ever read the books of Edward T. Hall ("The Hidden Dimension", "The Silent Language", "Beyond Culture")? They're all pretty dated (from 1959-1976) but very interesting looks at how different cultures look at and experience time, space, and cultural institutions. Rewarding reads for anyone interested in social/cultural anthropology.

It's more difficult than people think to describe a field and what it is really about. The typical starting point, is to look at a definition, as you did, and there is certainly nothing wrong with that. But, if anyone were to look up a definition for a field like mathematics, they would likely understand that unless they have some actual experience with math, they would have no idea what math was really all about simply from reading a definition. And as Nietzsche pointed out, it's virtually impossible to define something that has arisen historically. From the little I know about these two fields, I appreciate the fact that they look at societies across the globe to gain insights into people, which seems to be lacking in a lot of other social science fields. Economics is likely a chief offender as economists try to come up with universal laws of behavior. What I am disappointed about these two fields is that from what I have read, which is not much, so I could be wayyyy off base here, they seem to overlook a lot of the key insights from biological anthropology and genetics on human behavior and rather push the societal influences as the main causal factor instead of seeing how behavior is a result of genetics and environment playing a role. Anyways, thanks for letting me know that there is a difference between cultural and social anthropology. I always assumed it was a single branch of anthropology.

Hello hello! Thank you for sharing this! I love it when people are able to take what I have said a step further and analyze what is really going on :) Anyway, you make an excellent point about the lacking intermingling between the social and biological sides of academia. I personally believe we are in a time where different fields are beginning to collaborate with one another more and more. With all of that said, there is definitely some ways to go!

Thanks for breaking this down! I think based on this distinction, i would be leaning more towards an interest in social anthropology. I hope to one day study how the evolution of cultures across the African diaspora affects black youth's education. The variable is specific to education and the unique ways black youth show up in the classroom with distinct needs that seem to be shared in many different contexts across the diaspora (ie. In Canada where Im from vs. In the USA vs England etc.) Atleast thats what im going with for now until i change my mind 😅 thanks again for sharing this!! You just gained a new subscriber! 😃😃

This. Sounds. AMAZING! I love this research topic so much! Education is so important and having anthropologists who are interested in furthering our knowledge base about it is so important. I also love the African diaspora element as well-this is truly so valuable I hope you stick with it :) Thank you so much for your support, it means everything to me!

What is the difference between society and culture? I’ve looked it up and all the answers I’ve seen are so confusing and are basically giving the same definition for both but worded differently.

I think you are losing sight of your narrative. “Cultural communication” is symbolic in itself and the concepts we connect, or cultural performances, are not connected naturally, as we seem to exist in the world. Thus, assumptions cannot be rooted in reality, i.e. truth. 🤔 Of course, from what paradigm do I emerge in my narrative? 😊
