Hey friends, welcome to episode 4 of The Paint Show! (:
In this episode we'll be looking at Alizarin Crimson, by Winsor & Netwon's Cotman brand.
This paint is one of the best student grade paints out there.
The pigment of this one is PR206. It's funny, because Daniel Smith also has a tube that's made of PR206, for "Quinacridone Burnt Scarlet" - so read the labels carefully! Haha :D
The term Alizarin is an organic dye made of the madder plant (which also gives you some idea as to madder based paints such as "Madder Lake Deep" and "Brown Madder".
In the past it was made from the natural organic substance, but now is mostly made of a synthetic organic, indigo based dye.
The constitution numbers for this one are #73900 and #73920.
It has a permanence ranking of A (on an AA, A, B, C scale). It's non-granulating, transparent and series I (meaning it's a cheap paint to produce).
I hope you enjoyed this episode. Do let me know:
1. Should I go daily with this one? (5 episodes a week)
2. Which paints do you want me to review next?
Can't wait to hear from you, and we'll talk soon!
- Liron

Umm, no. Not exactly, though you have figured out some details. Let me see if I can explain this: First of all, what you have there is *NOT* Alizarin Crimson. It is "Alizarin Crimson *Hue* ". The distinction is important. Back in the old days when there wasn't any more durable color than Alizarin, of that red color, a popular color used to be made from Alizarin dye. Alizarin in turn is typically the synthetized version of the Alizarin component in the natural Madder dye. Synthetic Alizarin was preferred because it was much cheaper and stronger - more intense - than Madder. It also had a reputation of being more permanent than Madder. That reputation was wrong though. Natural Madder is actually somewhat more lightfast. Anyway, a lake was made from the dye and that's how the pigment Alizarin Crimson == PR83 was made. And that is the "fugitive" Alizarin Crimson that everybody is so afraid of. But what you have there is something different. It's a completely different color that is only named "Alizarin Crimson Hue" because it replaces the older, less permanent color. It is in reality a Quinacridone pigment, PR206. The generic name for the PR206 group is the one that D.S. gives their variant, Quinacridone Burnt Scarlet. And W&N Permanent Alizarin Crimson also uses a pigment from the same group, PR206. As far as I know, there is no PR206 pigment that is not rated ASTM 1. So this is *NOT* fugitive. Finally, 73900 and 73920 does *NOT* identify any "Indigo Dye". You have somehow picked up false info there. 73900 to 73999 are reserved for Quinacridone pigments. Hope this makes the pieces fall into place. Anyway, Cotman "Alizarin Crimson Hue" is a reliable water color paint. The entire modern Cotman range is.

Thank you for the corrections! This is a relatively old episode of the series, I learned a lot since 😁🙏🏼

I seem to recall the ds Scarlett you mentioned being very brown. I could be wrong but it's what I recall.

The Pyrrol Scarlet is very orange-ish, but perhaps they have others that are more brown (:

A daily show would be awesome! How about reviewing Mission Gold, M. Graham, and Shin Han watercolors? They are some more mid-range priced watercolors and it would be interesting to see how they rate in lightfastness and pigmentation.

Interesting video again, Liron. Incidentally, Alizarin Crimson was the absolute favourite red of Queen Victoria, who was a keen watercolour painter and who helped popularise the pigment. Personally, I prefer PV19, which is Quinacridone Rose, instead of Alizarin Crimson because of the better lightfastness rating.

Thank you, very interesting, I didn't know that! (: I'm trying to infuse some interesting facts as well, so hopefully there will be more in the upcoming videos. And I agree - I do exactly the same - I usually replace it with Quin. Rose.

From what I have been reading the fugitive pigment is PR83.

Correct! Alizarin Crimson is PR83. And this Cotman color is a Quinacridone, PR206.

Good info, Liron! I was wondering about the pallette you use - can you provide any information on that?
@LironYan

Dianne Rogers Yes! I'm using the Mijello fusion 18 palette. I really like it so far, and am using it almost exclusively. It has two large mixing areas, and a third huge one as well. There are plenty of review vids for it (it's really popular, by Mission, the same company of Mission Gold paints) 🙂

I love all your reviews on paints and supplies. I would love to see ANY Winsor &Newton Review cotman or pro. As well was Daniel Smith .

Thank you so much ^_^ That's the current trajectory. I have quite a few of these waiting to be reviewed. Currently in Paris, so hope to get some tubes here as well (but leverage the city for more "Parisian" brands such as Sennelier (; ).

Shalom Liron! Although the Alizarin Crimson hue color is beautiful, it is not the same and no color is as beautiful as the actual Alizarin Crimson, which you can buy from Daniel Smith. I still have the remains of an old tube of the original color from Windsor Newton but when that runs out, I'm through. I enjoy your color videos and would love to see you feature 3 colors: Aussie Red Gold from Daniel Smith, PG8 Green from White Knights and a cheaper brand you might want to try, Dick Blick's version of Brown Madder, which is a really wonderful red. If you can't get Dick Blick in Israel, let me know and i will try and send you some.

Is it the same as Fuchia?
@LironYan
@LironYan 7 жыл бұрын
Hmmm, it's similar indeed. I'd say that Alizarin Crimson is more red, and Fuchsia is more pink-ish. I personally like the dark-red look of Alizarin Crimson, but I think you could try substituting it with Fuchsia as well, depending on the situation (:

noticed that my cotman alizarin crimson color, looks completely different, its granulated and the color is a bit off ( too much for me) and really low pigmented, it says PR206 as pigment and A as permanence. Mine says made in china, i'm aware there are legit factories from W&N at china. You didn't show the back of the tube so don't know if its made in uk or china.

fernandogaki Just checked, mine's made in China (: Overall I would just steer clear of this one. Too many good replacements, no need to take risks.

let me show you a picture with that color, i tried to catch it the most accurate as possible. i.imgur.com/JxMJtzx.jpg and there is no way to get more pigment there without wasting half of the tube. I'm really sad with this color. i've heard from forums inconsistency in the cotman line. unless it's because of the camera, i don't think so, because there are other videos that show alizarin like yours, i'm pretty sure they are using different pigment even when they say they are using the same. Yours is more like carmin.

fernandogaki Oh I see, it's indeed different from mine. I would really suggest going with Quinacridone Rose, or something similar, instead. It's so weird, because Alizarin Crimson is both problematic AND popular. The first time I went to buy tubes, and I didn't know a thing, the sales person in the art store actually recommended it to me.

Fernandogaki, this tube is the hue. It’s not real Alizarin (which is fugitive). The PR 206 code is Quinacridone Maroon, which means it’s absolutely ok to use.

@Megabyte Exactly, its a hue (replacement/imitation). The real AC has pigment code PR83
