The massive prison population in the U.S. is getting older. Long sentences that were handed out decades ago are catching up with the American justice system, and prisons across the country are dedicating entire units just to house the elderly.
During difficult economic times, the issue has hit a crisis point. Estimates are that locking up an older inmate costs three times as much as a younger one.

This was literally just down the street from me and I heard the damn shots when it happened. The guys back in prison but he was already in previously for murder. Most people don’t change.

I've had at least a dozen black eyes and one concussion with 18 stitches from having my head slammed into rhe dinning table. That's not even close to all of it. I am a nurse and I worked at a state owned hospital for 13 years. When an inmate needed to be in the hospital, they came to my facility. We had a fully locked prison ward, but when an inmate needed ICU or speciality care like chemo, neuro, cardiac, or specialty nursing, they would be transferred and would have 1 or 2 guards with them at all times when off the prison ward. In the ICU, many times I took care of these patients who were in comas and on life support and yet they had to have a guard at the bedside and be shackled to the bed. Out of the ICU, I took care of many inmates who were alert and awake, and I would interact with them. It was against policy for nurses to know what the inmates were convicted of, but sometimes the guards would tell a nurse if they asked. I didnt want to know, and I didnt care. To me, that person was my patient. As long as they treated me with respect, I would give them the high quality nursing care I was trained to give. Now if they were disrespectful, that didnt mean I would give them substandard care, but I would not be likely to sneak into the kitchens at 2 am to get them some extra pudding, or get them a soda instead of water if they were thirsty. What surprised me was how polite, kind, and grateful the inmates were when I took care of them. To get a treat of pudding or ice cream at 2am was just not something they were used to. I cared for them without judgement, without duress, and with their dignity and comfort in mind. They would always say thank you to me. They never got mad at me, even if what I was doing hurt or I had to say no to a request because it was against medical orders. I had them tell me time and time again that they were not used to being treated like a human being instead of a number. Sometimes they cried with me, and some of them died because it was their time. They were not allowed visitors, and for several of my inmates, I was the person who was with them when they died because there was no one else. I understand both sides of this argument, but I just wanted to share my point of view and story. Thank you.

Yes same here. I looked after a prisoner in ICU who was brain dead. His organs were up for harvesting. He was shackled to the bed. On a ventillator etc & 2 guards all the way to OR! Bazaar situation😞

Whats sad is there is alot of people who were wrongfully arrested are cleared of all charges and is found innocent and the correct suspect arrested but cannot come home because they picked up assualt charges from the arrest against a police officer while trying to express their innocence, but I feel bad for the ones who assaulted or killed an inmate trying to extort them and defended their selves but now has to serve 10 to 20yrs from the offense. You said what was on my mind. I would go home daily with new bruises and markings from them attacking. I even had to get tested from MRSA because a resident attacked me who had it and clawed me. One event told me that they would kill me if they could. Elderly aren't as feeble as people like to make them out.

As the old saying goes, "if you do the crime, you do the time." A major problem today is the lack of a moral compass. I was a janitor. I seen that the porters didnt want to work. They didnt do their jobs. There was an old man that never showered and he mentally wasn't all the way there. I gave him a bath and he went crazy on me. He was a very funny guy. This guy in the documentary is exceptional. Very rare to see inmates care enough.

Anyone who works in this kind of environment is truly dedicated to the job. An orderly here could easily find a job in many "easier" facilities. He's here because he wants to be there. I wonder if he is a former inmate himself and was able to find a successful path in life and then help the people who he could have become. As many commentors have noted, these inmates are most likely getting better services in prison than they would at other state run facilities. These men have no family left willing to care for them if they have anyone at all.

Lots of times when victims give their impact statements, they say they want the person that hurt them to "rot in jail," or "die in jail." That's what's happening. Sure, you see these old guys and it's easy to feel sorry for them. Then you realize they chopped someone up in pieces, or killed a kid or something awful, and it gets harder to feel sorry. Maybe if they didn't hurt anyone when they committed their crime, I could see letting them out when they're old and sick. But, if they murdered someone, that changes things. After all, their victim didn't even have the chance to grow old.

I shared a room in the hospital with a elderly prisoner that was in this category who had a stroke. I was in an accident and transported to a local hospital. I ended up in a room with a guy, chained up in the bed who had a prison guard with him, he had very slurred and semi-coherent speech, and it was obvious that he was invalent. He was unable to walk, they had to bathe him in the bed. Later when he was discharged, two other guards came in and they strip-searched him (spread your cheeks and all), apparently rolling him around on the bed, they searched his diaper. All behind the curtain for me, which I appreciated. You can tell the guards were just following a transfer procedure by rote, just doing their job. I only saw him for a second when they wheeled him out, this 90lb scrawny, skeleton looking guy. It was a very strange experience. I don't know I have mixed feelings about it all. The guy probably did something really terrible for all I know.

I’m a trial clerk. I’ll never forget when I saw a 70 year old man sentenced to 20 years for a DUI murder. Other than this offense he had lived a great life , served in the military, took care of parents and family, served his community by volunteering for various charities. His only offense was a DUI when he was like 21. Now, he’ll die in there. No one wins. Really sad.

The skillastat i have a relative who was put on charge for murder+illegal gun possesion (i'm from sweden, getting a gun is nigh impossible) after a man had broken into their house and committed suicide. It took him 7 years and $2 mil to be freed of the charges since there was monetary pressure from the guys father. he'd be in prison if it wasnt for the several cameras he had in his home since he was extremely paranoid.

My family head is Myself and I'm starting to make plans for the future according on how this world works using my knowledge about past very bad experiences. I'm 28 yrs old, I know my value in term of potential but sometimes just shit happens dude and you're poor and alone, no family support whatsoever and you can't defend yourself against the system. Now I can only hope of building my own business because nobody will give me a job that I want to work for. That may be good, that may be bad. The worst is probably knowing the fact that I can't go back in time to prove I didn't do it. The best is probably the result. An intense studying of my environment might lead me to never have to face this again in my life whether it be for me or someone I love. Money is so strangely Good and Bad at the same time.

No the taxpayers are paying for their crimes and "mistakes" a prisoner who is locked up at 30 and has a life sentence costs taxpayers more than 1.8 million per prisoner (not including Healthcare when they get older) there is over 55,000 people with a life sentence that's 99,000,000,000$ just in life sentences that dosent count people who received 25-100 year plus sentence that adds millions of people (death row prisoners are the most expensive costing taxpayers 3-8 million dollars) per person most of them spend over 20 years in the court fighting their sentence. The "war on drugs" back in the 1980s when Regan introduced it probably cost the taxpayers in excess of 10 billion between court / prisons and jails/ people that were locked up / still to this day there are people that were locked up in the 80s 90s 00s that got 20 plus year sentences for drug related crimes which is just crazy and cost taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars over a 30/40 year span. Just like the 3x strike law that created so many people getting 25 plus year sentences even for non violent crimes and that floods the prison system with people that shouldnt be there and crates overcrowding and funding issues especially when you have a prison for 3000 people and you shove 5000-6000 in there and you have people sleeping on the floor in boats

Waiting to die in prison after committing heinous crimes is a fate worse than death. Living your entire life in a cage, with no family, no hope of ever getting out is terrifying. Death needs to come slow for these people, through natural causes. The death penalty is the easy way out in my opinion, plus innocent people have been executed which is a huge miscarriage of justice.
