Beyond the Wall: Part 1 - The Rise of Germany's Far Right | People & Power

Last November, celebrations to mark the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall were overshadowed by a palpable sense of unease in parts of Europe.
To be sure, the events of those weeks through late 1989 and beyond were hugely significant - iconic moments in history that came to symbolise the end of the Cold War and the decades of nuclear-tipped standoff between West and East.
Many Europeans felt that things could never be the same again, that their continent had seen the back of communist totalitarianism and repression and that a new age of peace and prosperity and democracy beckoned.
But in the years since, some of those dreams have turned sour amid rising xenophobia and nationalism in nations that once lay behind the Iron Curtain. Heady enthusiasm has been replaced by growing uncertainty, the world has somehow become darker and more menacing than many ever believed it would be. Things, in other words, didn't quite turn out as the optimists expected.
There are myriad reasons for this - and of course, many of them are linked to the wider global political and economic concerns that have emerged over the last 30 years - but at least some of what troubles the continent now can be traced back to the scars left by the Cold War and the way countries handled the transition away from the authoritarianism that suffocated parts of Eastern Europe for so long.
For this two-part special report, People & Power sent filmmakers Glenn Ellis and Viktoryia Kolchyna to find out more.

The blame for what has happened lies more with the West than East. Guenter Grass had published his writings () arguing the former DDR should not automatically be united with the Bundesrepublik; an interim period was absolutely vital. But the then ruling party in Bonn was the CDU and Kohl did everything in his power to speed up 'unification' (of two quite different post-WWII states). Everyone outside Germany applauded blindly, next to no-one knew about the shockingly draconian treatment of the people themselves. Neocapitalism and failure of the political establishment are chiefly responsible for the social & economic breakdown. Besides, neo-fascism/Nazism is almost equally as strong in the West anyway; in the East it just received a massive helping hand from Scheiss Politiek; first from Bonn, now from a totally absurdly re-Hauptstadt-ised Berlin.

It's utterly bizarre that anyone would try to draw an expected correlation between the Berlin Wall coming down and native East and West Germans mixing with each other (perfectly natural and good) and Germany opening its borders to people that aren't even remotely German or European in any way, shape or form. There should have never been any expectation of this. Germany should be for Germans or at most ethnic Europeans. Period. End of story.

European Jews are no more European than the Arabs or Africans or Gypsies who have been born in Europe. Liberalism and wild capitalism simply isn't the answer for everything as an alternative for an oppressive but at the same time caring communism. Isn't it symbolic that "Ossies" became more and more extreme right under a former Ossie who became chancellor ? That alone shows that things changed in different speeds for the different parts of the population. And for some, not much changed. For many, it became worse than it was before. No wonder lots of people grow angry. Current politicians simply don't manage to come up with solutions to progressively make things better for every German. Or worse, they don't care about it. It's not that there isn't enough funds. Otherwise, why open the doors for 1 million people from faraway countries with a completely different set of values and beliefs ? Again, no wonder many people react over-nationalistically, because "Berlin" tries to push multiculturalism through their throat in stead of helping the "other" Germans. Unfortunately, not wanting to listen to these folks now start to lead to killings. And dark forces are ready to use that anger of "simple" people for their own, dangerous purposes. History keeps on repeating itself, yes, because political leaders keep on making deliberately the same mistakes, thinking history won't, can't repeat itself. While it can. The recent arrests in West Germany show this all to clearly.

The communists used to call the Berlin Wall the Anti-Fascist Rampart. Given subsequent events since the fall of communism, that moniker now seems rather apt. And sorry blaming communism three decades ago for fascism today, seems like passing the buck. Truth is East Germany is just returning to its niche in capitalism. East Germany was always more conservative and economically poorer than the West. In the 1930s East Germany was solidly in support of the Nazis. The reason East German was so repressive was due to East Germany being full of Nazis. Like Eastern Europe more generally.
