All his adult life, Mike Africa Jr. fought for the release of his parents and other imprisoned members of MOVE, a radical Black revolutionary group in Philadelphia, US. Nine members of MOVE were convicted of murder and sentenced to 30 to 100 years for the death of a police officer in 1978 when a standoff turned into a shootout. The MOVE-9 always maintained their innocence. Mike Jr.'s parents, Mike and Debbie Davis, are released on parole with a love for each other that survived four decades of enforced separation. Mike Jr. who was born in prison and raised by extended family continues a fight for freedom while planning his parents wedding. Growing Together is a documentary film by Karen Marks.

Tears of love. It is so utterly appropriate that the Africa family, so long abused by the official violence of the white establishment in Philadelphia, is featured on this network at this time. What happened to Move in Philly was an embodiment of the same poisonous values carries by the IDF. It grew out of land grabs, state terror directed at any resistance to the plans of developers, any culture not convenient to their supremacist domination of city life. I was young but saw all this happen, witnessed the mounted police beating old couples on the porches, terrorizing neighborhoods for daring to live in a place now wanted by the white rich. It was traumatizing even to live there, what this family has gone through is unspeakable. We need to connect the dots, all of us. I have lived in five american cities, and in each one at some time a neighborhood was cleared with violence, by a collaboration of a university, the police, city government and developers. Five for five. These are genocide values in action. We have to end their power globally or they will end us all.

I remember this horrific incident in Philadelphia. I was born and raised in the city. I remember as I watched in horror what happened to Move and the neighborhood of Osage Avenue. I was expecting my fourth son when this occurred. My husband and I drove to the area and I remember how that area looked like a war zone. Thank you Al Jazeera for doing this documentary. This is the reason why I only watch Al Jazeera News. I'm praying the family will find peace and resolve.

The bombing in '85 reinforced what I already knew, that this entity that occupies Turtle Island is a death machine.

This brings tears to my eyes ... I was in Chicago, Illinois the first time I visited the USA (well actually I was marrying in Chicago 🤷🏾‍♀️) and watched in utter horror, LIVE on TV a police helicopter dropping a BOMB on a house in a residential area where Black Americans lived .... and sickeningly terrifying urge to return to Africa there and then. Watched this in deep emotion, and oh my God .... "Coming home to hugs", that got me. 🤎🤎🤎 to the Africa family.
