The Arab Spring got rid of autocrats and inspired millions. But ten years later people are wondering about the human cost. In Tunisia they managed to avoid war, bring in reforms and even find a way to heal. But is that enough to call Tunisia a success story?

Your translator got it all wrong! The first scene of this video showcases protesters screaming the most popular chant of our revolution which meant "We'll live on water and bread but we will not accept Ben Ali anymore". The subtitles translated that into "We need bread! We need money!" There's a big difference between the two.

as a Tunisian person, its true that compared to the other arabic countries we got the least damage, maybe because all citizens had one goal in mind so there were not a lot of diversity at that time , but is our situation right now good? 90% of tunisians are not satisfated of life here and a lot of them trying to leave to Italy, i'd like to mention what good and bad points we got of the revolution, first we did the revolution for democracy reasons, freedom of speech that was oppressed, people get thrown in jail for simply protesting or for simply not agreeing with the president, we wanted all of that to change. what we got with the revolution is freedom and yes its the best thing i did experience, after the revolution and when i was about to vote for election i was amazed and simply teary eyed for having the experience to participate,now we protest when we want, we criticize on tv about the country matters without really living in fear of going to jail but now lets talk about the bad points which are a lot, the instability yeah thats happening, for now its less dangerous but still a bit worrying, we do get tourists its not really bad but im saying no one can confidently say "its will not happen one day" the military and police trying their best to keep terrorists out of the country and for them to not sneakily start planning of targeting us the biggest issue for tunisians is the financial problem of the country and the poverty, we are still struggling with corruption too and its hard to held them accountable as those "people have power" and they use their position to cover up their crimes its really hard. we are struggling and they keep trying to shut us down and many people are tired of struggling for many years in this country do tunisians regret the revolution? not all but few of them do, freedom is good but if you ask people they will choose their basic needs first as they need to survive hunger first ,its instincts.we want to live in a stable place and have a good financial situation, if you draw a triange to write about human satisfaction, the priority is always the basic needs ,then on top is the freedom. in the same time i feel sad for what the other arabic countries are going through, we all have the same goal anyway, which is to live in peace, in a free country where we can express ourselves, i hope the time where they live in peace come, i hope the sacrifices that are made bring good results in the end. sorry for my long message ^^

There's an error in the translation at the beginning of the video. The protester doesn't say we need bread we need money. It says we accept to to live with water and bread we need Ben Ali out. It's quite the opposite of what's written. A lot of events happened in Tunisia, the process is still long.

Of course Al Jazeera adjusts the message to suit their needs to create a more positive message, they were part of the problem that created the arab spring in the first place. Don't forget that news channels always try to push their propaganda and telling people to riot against their govt and the US. I am all for rioting against the US but overthrowing your own country without a plan is pure stupidity. So many lives lost, so much instability created and the US benefited.

"Tunisia is a success " Well here's what we've gained from the revolution : - more corruption - crime rates skyrocketing - inflation - outlaw citizens - more police brutality - political instability - more poverty - more unemployment - terrorism ( influenced by certain political parties) - more depression - careless president - flawed democracy - incompetent politicians ( no for real, there's a smuggler that got elected as representative) - suicide rates increased - a weak educational system Btw : another revolution is coming soon, the first one took down a system, this one will take down an entire country...

@@aj3314 Unfortunately the gullible masses don't comprehend that All they care about is what the Western governments want them to think and feel. They want their people to be stupid and rebellious to their existing governments which at least are doing their jobs, even if they have flaws. They want these Arab countries to be weak, so their economy and currency is strong. People need to wake up. The West never cares about spreading good values and democracy. They only deliver petty promises to the people in foreign countries, and then leave them in turmoil. And you know what's worse? The civilians living in their comfortable homes out there in America are probably thinking about how great their country is and how they are the forefronts of civilization, progressiveness, and spreading freedom. And now they complain to these ruined countries, "They are in the stone age. They don't accept homosexuality. Islam is backwards".

The Arab Spring might have had more chance of success if foreign powers had not interfered for their own political and financial gain and made the situation worse than it was. There will be no peace anywhere on earth until the people are left to decide their future themselves and not be dictated to by foreign powers, the military or the priesthood. I really do wish them well.

Foreign powers cannot influence large masses easily, would you agree with that? Furthermore it should be noted that there is an ebb and flow to political transitions, we don't know what Egypt will look like in 5 years for example but the deep state did return with a vengeance and this was probably planned from the start of the revolution

Out of curiosity, (I'm quite ignorant when it comes to lives of ppl in Africa and Middle East) how would you rate the quality of education an avarage Tunisian gets? Are there any differences between teaching ppl STEM and humanities? Do they emphasize on the importance of civic involevement in healthy democracy?
@Haythem93465
@Haythem93465 Жыл бұрын
@@abcdmefgh2843 That's a very good question and a difficult one to answer. I will answer from my personal experience. I'm an engineer, I studied all of my life in Tunisia and I work and live here as well. From a technical point of view, our STEM education is decent. Not the best, but very decent nonetheless. Tunisia exports thousands of engineers and technicians every year to first world countries which is understandable because they are well educated and they are trying to make a good living for themselves. We also have one of the best medical schooling in the middle east and that is reflected by the big medical tourism industry here in Tunisia. We get patients from Africa and even some europeans seeking cheaper healthcare. We also export alot of doctors and nurses as well for the same reasons. keep in mind that education is free for everyone. However, as you have stated, there's few to non existant emphasis on civic engagement and democracy in our education. Maybe because this whole new democracy thing is new to us since we have been a democracy for just over 10 years now.

From the get go Bourguiba, who is unique in the whole arab world, invested in education, health and the well being of his people. Kadafi took the wealth of his country to do "Bunga Bunga" with his freind in Italy. In the arab world once a leader get hold of the power, he never quits. The best show on the Internet. Gives you ample authentic stuff in just 10 odd minutes to start with. Extraordinary stuff. But it is painful to see that female journalists have to bear this much harassment as evidenced by sexist slurs hurled at the most elegant and exalted female journalist I ever had the good fortune to come across. I request the staff to please remove derogatory comments. Keep up the good work.

If those people could have known the upcoming war beforehand, they would have never done the protest. There's no way for the event to be a 'spring'. Wish the best for people in Yemen, Syria, and Libya

If I tell you that you have to give me 80% of the money you make or I'll torture you in a cell until you do it anyway, is the right thing to do to just give me your money in the first place? If you resist me, things might end up even worse for you. If you capitulate, they'll be better, relatively. The fact that the outcomes have been ruined (in large part by the intervention of other countries) doesn't mean they didn't do the right thing or that they wouldn't/shouldn't do it again. There's always a good reason to resist. People are going to keep swinging for the fences so long as someone's got their foot on their heads, because the people standing on the common folk are going to press harder and harder to squeeze more and more out of them if they think they can get away with it.

This is the first thing came into my mind that they went backward from where they were. In Economics it is mentioned several times in many theories " Maximization of individual interests don't maximize collective interest". I don’t know when the muslim community learn their lesson.

After Arab spring ... the west is enjoying the warmth by oiling there lamps and the arabs living in shelters suffering from cold due to lack of clothes and the rest pushed back into the Aegean sea to drown. .... What a success story.

Remember what was stated in the middle of minute 6: 10 years is not a long time to transform a country. In the 1800s there were several European autocracies that transitioned to democracy but it was a bumpy road then just as it is now, you can move backwards before you move forward

Unfortunately the military leaders and soldiers and the police are the ones to blame in these countries for the oppression because without them, the dictators have absolutely no power. And who makes up the military and the police? The people do! The people is what gives any leader power. Take away all the people and they have nothing but an idea that they cannot act on. Those in the military or the police still must effectively function in that society. They must buy food at local stores, they must have schools that their children go to, most have family in the country that they serve, etc… The people in society must make it known what it is the people want and they must be shunned. They must know that society doesn’t approve. Back in the days of Rome, the Caesar sent his soldiers off to fight a war, and finding their leader on the wrong side of history, they turned around and marched right back to Rome and rallied others to their cause and the Caesar fell. People need to wake up and see that they have more power than they think they do. If you want to win the war you must win the military and the law enforcement. Trust me, they aren’t getting paid that well. They are trained to obey their leaders. That’s all. Their minds can be changed with the right kind of influence.
