Күн бұрын

Al Jazeera’s Investigative Unit secretly films officials in Namibia demanding cash in exchange for political favours. It’s a story of how foreign companies plunder Africa’s natural resources. Using confidential documents provided to Al Jazeera by Wikileaks, . “Anatomy of a Bribe” exposes the government ministers and public officials willing to sell off Namibia’s assets in return for millions of dollars in bribes. Al Jazeera journalists spent three months undercover posing as foreign investors looking to exploit the lucrative Namibian fishing Industry. The country’s Minister of Fisheries is shown willing to use a front company to accept a $200,000 ‘donation’. Exclusive testimony from a whistleblower who worked for Iceland’s largest fishing company reveals that his employers instructed him to bribe ministers and even the president in return for fishing rights worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

It is not only that they are exposing the fishing industry in Iceland. They are also robbing us of our fish. We have a Quota which is distributed and can be bought from other companies/people who own a quota. This has created massive corruption within the Icelandic government and it shows as the current minister of fisheries is linked to Samherji. He is the former mayor of Akureyri which is the largest seaport on the northern coast. While he was mayor he gave a tons of favours to Samherji while he was mayor. Iceland is just as corrupt as Namibia and a lot of shady stuff goes down here.

Iceland was also s colony like Namibia and we were robbed of our resources by Denmark like Namibia was robbed by Germany and Britain. This is very embarrassing for me as I'm a huge anti-imperialist but then the Samherji dickheads are just as bad as the British and other colonial powers. I feel for Namibians who do not see any of the money being made in the country because I have experienced the same thing here in Iceland. Although I'm not saying that Icelanders live in a lot of poverty. Some do but a majority get by and always have food on their table. Namibia is even more exploited than Iceland ever has. Your wealthy are literal thieves stealing from the regular Namibian and keeping him in poverty.

Listen you have nothing to apologize for. We Africans need to understand that no one will look for our best interest for us. We have no sense of responsibility. All we do is complain about how the Western world takes advantage of us. Meanwhile our so called leaders are corrupted to the bones. And the stupidity of some population blindly following those leaders because they are from the same tribe makes me feel like sometimes we deserve all the abuse taking place there

My wish is that we had more people like you Stefansson, what you had done for the Namibian people and the world at large, can not be praised and appreciated enough. You took a stand and a decision that rarely 95% of the people would take, you put your life on the line; all to save the people from the dilapidated experience that these ruthless politicians who claim to do good for the people were putting us through. I hope one day you'll get your deserving reward for such works you had done. In you, many people were able to retain their works and take care of their families. What you have done is really generous and gracious, I really wish you well and hope that you'll achieve the best health status that you can have. I as well wish you well and hope that you'll continue at all costs to do what's right and ethical. Thank you isn't even enough to appreciate your efforts so I'll just no say it. It actually looks like a false operator sting using fraudulent paperwork using the sanction technique. can't take american money if you have sanctions on you. looks like the investor walked off with a fishing deal and there was never money involved. you can't get paid if the account is frozen due to sanctions so there was never a deal. the people are in jail over currency. but if you were a quick thing, you would of picked that up;)

this is very sad, politicians cannibalise its own people. whenever i see fruits from africa, i will buy. africa has rich soil to grow produce the way mother nature intended. i imagine the farmers, toil day in and out in the farms to make ends meet and I recall seeing a documentary that they were so proud of their produce. i hope they don't succumb to western farming like GMO and use of toxic pesticide. I'm sad knowing lots of profit from exports doesn't pay then fairly. The world that we live in, sigh....

Amazing journalism. This is the modus operandi of corruption in Africa (country after country) with heartless politicians. Johannes, thank you for exposing this corruption. You are a brave man, and a good man. I hope Namibia recovers everything left of what these corrupt fellows have stolen from Namibians, and I hope they pay a very heavy price for their actions. I would like to thank Al Jazeera group for doing such a great investigation, this is an example of how a lot of business is conducted in Namibia and the rest of the world. While stating that the government is for the people you will evidently see that many officials befit from similar activities., one can visually also see that these "Sharks" are becoming richer while the majority of people that supported these individuals are drowning more into poverty. This video will definitely educate a lot of people in Namibia, Africa and the world.

They're not "their own". People who think it's okay to steal, especially from the most needy and vulnerable, think it's okay to steal... it makes no difference what country they or their victims were born in. Being born in the same country as other people doesn't mean you're all one team. Haven't most people who have ever hurt you been from the same country? Unless you migrated at an early enough age, haven't most people who've hurt you been "your own"?
