I say let them Frack but here are the requirements......All corporate executives and their family must take permanent residence where they frack. Wanna bet fracking all of a sudden becomes not such a good idea after all.

I've read articles, watched both pro and anti-fracking vids. It's a real dilemma. The risks you stated are real and we are gambling with them. But this new energy pulled us out of the recession and is reducing our deficits. We're stuck with it now. Stronger regulations are the best we can hope for. I know folks from my home state of MN, who went to work in ND and saved themselves from bankruptcy. Life is more important than money, but tell that to a desperate, unemployed person.

Please. In my hometown of Peters Township near Pittsburgh PA, over 70% of us voted to allow fracking companies to drill in our town. It is bringing in businesses and jobs into our region. So far, after 2 years no pollution to our community what so ever. Yes as seen in this video, fracking accidents do happen when a company is ignorant and they should be condemned. But for the most part, natural gas drilling has brought nothing but good to my community.

Read E.F. Schmauchers a guide for the Perplexed, then a book written by modernist economists on representational democracy and capitalism. Then read polemics and literary critiques of democracy during the New deal era. After that read some post-modern 90's literature on liberal democracy.

Oil i far more valuable because its 'cheap' oil. Not because it costs less, but because it gives you a lot of energy back, considering the energy you put in to getting it. Alberta Canada and the US have the massive reserves of Oil Shale, but crude Oil still trumps it because it gives you shed loads more energy. This is why the US is still dependent on foreign oil, and why other oils won't replace crude. Its called EROI, (Energy return on investment)

It's safe when everything is done right but accidents DO happen. There needs to be some compensation for those people who are hurt when things go wrong. We're not going to ban fracking now that it's widely used in this country. Like you said, even Obama backs it. The biggest problems seem to come out of PA, probably from lack of regulation there. I can't believe they don't tax their gas. ND taxes their oil and they've got a budget surplus from it..

If not coal or fracked natgas then what should be our energy source? Only realistic option if not those two is uranium -- which everyone hates and is prone to black swans. Solar and wind cannot be baseload power. Geothermal energy is wonderful but capitalize intensive and lacking in intellectual capital currently (NEVADA GEO POWER). Energy is a great challenge for civilization.

Digging up fossilized plants & burning it...I wouldn't really call that a 19th century practice, but a 20th century one. However, we are of course now in the 21st, and it is indeed time to move on. Wind, solar, & nuclear fusion research all the way! Maybe even conventional nuclear fission if we can learn to build the reactors more safely (as with Pebble-Bed Reactors, or Thorium Reactors).
