The ultimate outcome of tariffs is that you end up sharing the local market with importers and you export nothing. Imported cars become more expensive due to tariffs but your local manufacturers have no incentive to be more efficient and therefore match import prices. You have no chance in export markets. Your local cars are too expensive and then retaliatory tariffs get slapped on them.

The imported EV with tariff will still have better quality and tech than the EU local manufacturers and end up consumers will still buy the imported EV. The EU car makers without the capability to export due to unattractive pricing will hurt their back as they not able to achieve economic of scale to cost down their product. Eventually the EU carmakers will get more struggle and keep losing market share all over the world.

When Chinese join WTO many EU carmakers jump in and built factory by joint venture with Chinese firm to sell ICE cars. EU carmakers earn hundred of billions dollar over the years. Chinese carmakers until today still not able to build ICE car as good as EU car brands. But when the world talk about green and environment friendly vehicles Chinese gov acts rapidly to urge their own local carmakers to switch to concentrate to electric vehicle, meanwhile Toyota is heading for hydrogen which is considered failure. EV idea to be commercial from Tesla and this embraced greatly by EU but end up Chinese gov act fast on it. But when the late comers Chinese brands raise up the EU notice they lack behind, and they launched protectionism by impose tariff on Chinese EV with a stupid excuse that Chinese EVs are heavily subsidized from Chinese gov. Isn't that sound good if Chinese gov using their own citizens tax to fund the EV and this sell to EU citizens. EU citizens are getting free funding from Chinese gov.

What a big mess there is in that head. The Chinese government heavily subsidizes industry and exports because it knows that the only way so far to gain market share and external influence has been through low prices in open markets. By doing so, it is also attracting foreign investment to the country and increasing its production by relocating factories from the West that are then exported. Nowadays, almost all European car manufacturers buy and import parts from China from their own factories to Europe due to the very low cost. This led to a massive shift of production from Europe to China. They managed to move their own production and also drag European suppliers to move or force them to buy Chinese components due to low prices. This situation has dragged on and grown over the years until they reached the point where the market turned against them. If sales continued to be high in China we wouldn't be having this conversation... Now we all know the failure and illusion we have been experiencing... The European economy is in serious trouble and is weaker than ever and exposed to a huge economic crisis that if it occurs in the future could cause damage that was unthinkable until now. And take note that China really needs exports to balance and help alleviate its major real estate crisis in order to avoid the collapse of its economy, which has seen its external debt soaring much more than its growth. None of this happens by chance....

Our EU automotive industry has "Only" 3 major obsticals: 1) Battery availability at competitive prices (under €50/kWh and sinking). The lack of progress of NothVolt and others to be competitive to imported Chinese batteries is concerning. 2) Computer controlled car architecture designed cars: EU carmakers are short off the skills/management knowhow to run software projects. 3) With an EV care end of line cost of -20% car makers can only survive by increasing their added value: in house drive motor manufacture, sold their folded body parts, make their seats etc. and finally sell their cars to the client. German automakers sales in China are declining very rapidly , they are also offering very deep discounts to try maintain mkt share ( will def hurt profits ) ,and large dealerships all over the country are closing for good ( Merc in BJ , BMW also ). EVs in China represent 50% of all new cars sold and increasing by the month. Expect it to reach 80% by next year. This is the beginning of the end. BYD, Xiaomi, XPeng, Leapmototr , Zeekr etc are all performing strongly. Ofc there will be some Chinese EV companies will go bust , that’s called competition.

The EU should also focus on building infrastructure that will 'fix' the pain point of owning an electric car, once there are enough charging point like filling stations, the market would have an adjusted demand, making the switch to electric more plausible. Then what's left is sorting the high prices - taxes on new sales/ all sales - , and innovation will bring down charging speeds somehow too. Simply put it, China is not the only problem, people are just buying them cause they are cheaper, but you are ignoring people who aren't even buying those Chinese cars because of all the inconveniences around EVs, make the environment (market) ready for EVs.

Why isn't anyone listening? Nobody in their right mind would buy an ev in Europe. It's not just that the cars are expensive, it's the public charging network, which is a total mess. Charging stations are almost always inconveniently located, out in the open weather, poorly lit, and wait times to access a charger can be longer than your own charging time. Then there are the issues of commonly unserviceable chargers, multitudinous apps, and non-common RFID cards. It's a complete and absolute shambles - and public charging is becoming really expensive. As I said at the start, why would anyone in their right mind buy an ev in Europe? Oh, and forget about Nordic countries, they paid for their ev revolution by selling hydocarbons.
