Farmers in the Netherlands are angry
They're rejecting laws that regulate emissions produced by livestock, but will have a major impact on the farming community and the larger economy.
The Netherlands has failed to meet its emissions reduction targets - so permits for new homes and roads have not been granted since 2019, to prevent further pollution.
And the government has introduced tough new rules.
Its $100-billion food export industry - one of the biggest in the world - could be badly affected.
So, what will this climate policy mean for global food supplies?
Presenter: Rob Matheson
Guests:
Jeroen Van Maanen - Dairy Farmer and Protest Organiser.
Natasja Oerlemans - Food and Agriculture Expert at the World Wide Fund for Nature Netherlands.
Theo Mandersloot - Broker in agriculture commodities at AGRACOM.

I am Dutch and I can add something tot this news item. Yes, the EU has imposed rules for the reduction of nitrogen. But each EU country applies these rules in its own way. The Netherlands is a small country with 17 million people. There has been a shortage of affordable houses for years. What you don’t hear anywhere in the media is that the Dutch government uses the nitrogen reduction rules to not only force farmers to stop, but to expropriate their land. They want to use this precious land to build houses and new industrial areas. The farmland has been owned by farming families for generations. They are driven to bankruptcy and there is hardly any financial compensation in return. That is why the farmers are now protesting en masse. Currently, many false news stories are being brought into the world through Dutch news channels. Also to ensure that the Dutch people turn against the farmer’s actions. But so far the actions are still fully supported by the people. Please make sure everyone in the world hears about this injustice. Thank you.

This is about NWO, elites and politicians who wants to create food shortages. So far they have been successful in africa. They want to enslave the massas. Super rich think they are superior to the people, they are afraid to die and wants to live longer to enjoy their riches and for this others must die. Uncle Klaus is just another hitler who changed tactics. Get rid of them all and let the people rule.

It is a complicated issue. Undermining farming in the name of meeting climate goals like net zero is a dangerous gambit because global famine will not take years to manifest but will be immediate, and the ensuing chaos will not care how green one's ambitions are. If you cannot eat, you will not really care how green your energy is.

The fact is animal, especially cow farming is hugely inefficient. Every 6 calories fed to cow gives 1 calorie back, not to mention the amount of water used and the damage caused by their waste. Increased efficiency means decreased welfare. People need to wake up to this. Farmers should grow efficient, calorie rich crops in these times of need. Why is this not obvious to everyone?

They push the farmers out. Government makes a lot more money taxing middle class people in large apartment complexes or swats of Homes, than a bunch of farmland. Not only does this create an increased tax base, but the loss of self sufficiency will quickly lead to rising prices from Importation/Duties/freight, which even further elevates the amount of taxes people are paying due to the rising cost of goods. More people in Cities, leads to more Police and Government infrastructure, as people slowly decline into madness from living in Unsustainable urban communities that POLLUTE much more than farm land.

As a small holding farmer myself I think fertiliser and diesel fumes account for most of the nitrous oxides. ( not nitrogen which is harmless) Ammonium nitrate is made from natural gas or here in Africa shale coal. This also releases more than 400 million tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere each year. My cattle are not the problem.

Yes I agree with you Nitrogen is a fertilizer element for both types of farming the only difference is livestock farming uses organic fertilizer (cow poo)more which in my opinion is better for the environment, also chemicals sprays are used a lot more for plant based farming compared to livestock farming. I think there needs to be a balance, because if we remove all the livestock and go all plant based farming there will be more chemical sprays being used to grow more crops and a lot less biodiversity

Something bothers me about this shift to green energy and greening of the environment: we didn't get here where we are overnight, so how can we expect to solve this problem in the twinkling of an eye? To make changes in the agricultural sector to the tune of 70 and 90% is not something that is achievable in short order. In my humble opinion, the major contributor to pollution in the world is not being mentioned at all and that is the military industrial complex. All these nuclear weapons and all other munitions and the testing of them is having a much greater impact on the environment than the production of food. No one can deny this.

Uniting Dutch Agriculture best practices with Regenerative Ecological Agriculture, Hollistic management and Permaculture practices can provide the solution to this issue with a huge number of rewards from improving the health of the environment and human population, reducing dependency on outside inputs and supporting increased profits for farmers. An intrenched farming method foisted and incentivised over decades by government/agribusiness is now demonised by the very same people. Farmers are not given the option to transition in an orderly and incentivised way. They are threatened with losing their land and livelihood with the land confiscated by the government and their corporate interests. This a land grab with climate change used as the reasoning. Transition needs to happen but you need to bring the people with you. When you threaten people they will always react negatively. They will always resist. At the very least this has been incredibly poorly communicated and handled. I have worked in climate change Education for years and have a very good grasp of the issues and the challenges. This is an example of what not to do…If, If the government’s intentions are honourable and honest.

The 'entrenched interests' mentioned are those of the chemical companies supplying pesticides (they have lots of power and lobbyists) for monoculture farming and also the companies supplying the damaging artificial fertilisers used in mono-culture, which create destructive runoffs into water supplies as does the factory farming of cattle, pigs and chickens and the more recently included goats and ducks.

She wants us to eat soy? I can see how industrialized agriculture is causing environmental problems, but replacing livestock with crop production is not the way to go, it's just more industrial agriculture, and we can't just eat the same diet cows eat and be healthy. Livestock is essential to soil health and human health but should be grazing the ground directly, not eating feed in barns. The big problem with dairy is dairy cows are so fragile they can't do that anymore. I found the details in this interview really helpful in terms of understanding wha's going on.

The environment, soil, air, drinking water, inner and coastal environment are heavily affected by poison, Nitrates and Phosphor, lead out from their huge production facilities! There is no food shortage in EU, and the majority of production is therefore exported, supported by tax payers money! A completely broken concept burdening society and nature, to support a tiny antisocial minority! Guess who is occupied in their huge farms and driving shiny EU funded machinery.. Antisocial wage dumping Eastern Europeans! All the costs are carried by the society, while contribution is close to zero, except for the intense pollution! Cows in Holland are mainly fed on grass. The soja they feed animals is made from the debris that remains after the milk is extracted from the soja. This debris is not suitable for human consumption. Neither is the grass. Cutting livestock wil produce food shortages. It would take years to transition to plant based protein products fit for human consumption. If at all possible in this soil and climate. By that time I think we wil be grateful for even a bug to eat in all the county’s the Netherlands currently supply with dairy.

actually, here in the Netherlands the Farmers are responsible for 40% of emissions. that's just the agriculture sector without transports, supermarkets etc. so no. Shell is not a bigger polluter then some of these, they call themselves farmers, but it's really more industrialized manufacturing with livestock as input. if you were to look at one of these companies in person. you're first thought would be "wow, where does all the manure go?" .. there is a huge manure surplus and yet farmers are still pumping fields full of fertilizers. 40% of all energy consumption in the netherlands goes to just 2 companies.. both of them produce fertilizers from natural gas. I would very much like to mention that the farmers that are protesting are almost all owners of large dairy farms... other farmers, like me, are actually very much looking forward to a new set of rules because if certain farmers are willing to destroy their, soils, animal welfare and businesses just to compete... others farmers have no choice but to join in or lose to the competition.

Simple, don't over fertilize and over water. Runoff is the main issue with pollution and nitrogen in waterways. Rotate crops and livestock. Harvest the nutrients the livestock produce. Why am I hearing no mention of Monsanto and other chemical companies who have pushed chemical fertilizers (and worse) for decades? They have made farmers dependent on them through debt.

monanto mostly involves the crops, not cattle. they don't have the foothold in the netherlands as they do in the usa as we have our one gene editing industry here. Rotating cattle and crop seems nice but is hard to do. Where crops are and cattle depends alot on the type of soil. good ground for crops is rarely used for cattle, whom are kept on poorer or more sandy soils.

I stand with the farmers 👍🏻 it is all very well wanting to plant crops instead of animal agriculture.. but not everyone wants to exchange meat protein for soy products. And.. in the meantime having lived in the Netherlands myself.. most people are happy to hop on a plane to go for their vacantie. And that is entirely acceptable.. it is all very hypocritical

In between the two world wars, the Soviet Communist party decided farmers were not educated enough to manage the food system. So the government took control, and micro managed everything. The result was millions died of starvation. Pol pot did the exact same in Cambodia, same result.

Upstate NY USA this has been in motion for 25-30 years giving almost nothing for the milk price to the point the small farmers spend 110% to operate due to equiptment cost, fuel, seed, and fertilizer cost. They created the problem and now want to push the cost of the problem on the people. Nitrogen on crops from petroleum products harms the natural forms of nitrogen removal like microbes and earthworms! They also knew this and much more that created problems that are being hidden. The problem is lack of transparency with the people.

I stand by the Dutch farmers! 🇳🇴🇾🇪 This is an ongoing debate in Norway also. Reducing farming now is totally insane, in todays world with food shortages. It is a rush amongst the European countries to reach the Paris Agreement, but, it goes too fast. If Netherland cant produce enough food for their people, and even for export to other EU countries, food has to be imported from elsewhere, if possible. This will lead to pollution in other parts of the world and when shipping the food. Why not produce food in areas/countries where the government can spend money on technology to reduce the climate gasses. But remember, as a comparison, the agriculture in Norway is responsible for 4% of the total CO2 emissions. About 80% of the emissions are caused by fossile fuel.
