Local elections in the Netherlands have dealt a huge blow to the incumbent governing coalition, as the anti-government BBB party came out on top. So how did this all play out? Why did the pro-farmer party win? And could this spell the end for Mark Rutte?

It's pretty obvious that the BBB was formed to co-op and then derail the farmers market, I predict they will claim impotence to do anything that stops the seizure of farm land. The WEF has scheduled the netherlands for cultural destruction by mass waves immigrantion. No political group wants to stop it outside their rhetoric to voters.

as a Dutchman, this really signifies how the Senate has completely lost its meaning and original purpose. Technically the Senate should only be checking if the new legislation is in accordance with the constitution and other (European) laws, not blocking legislation based on party policies. This is one of the reasons why a LOT of people are calling for the Senate to abolished - it has stopped doing its job anyway, causing actual decisions being made (which is already difficult enough in Dutch politics) to be almost impossible now.

The reason for the Nitrate policy from the government is actually a bit more complex than that, at least as I understand it. The nitrate emissions are actually EU mandated, and are to strict because anywhere within 25km of a Natura 2000 zone (a natural reserve) is protected terrain. Now early in the 2000s, the previous government decided it was a good idea to designate EVERY pond, forest and lake as a Natura 2000 zone to the EU. Since unlike say, France, the Netherlands has a lot of interspersed nature zones between its cities and towns, this means that a large amount of these zones overlap infrastructure, and farming zones. Which is a major problem... Other countries have to follow these laws as well, but often have more space and are not nearly as densely packed with these natura 2000 zones as the Netherlands is. France for example has major Natura 2000 preserves, but they are few and far between. so it doesn't matter. As such, now, a major part of the Netherlands territory can't exceed certain emission levels due to the Natura 2000 zones being too close to them. While previously the government tried to sidestep this by allowing emissions to be offset from elsewhere... the ruling from the regulatory body (and the EU) basically made this bypass null and void. As a result, from one day to another, suddenly, the Netherlands had no more allowance in many of these zones to build, farm or well do much of anything. Even building windfarms or solar plants is restricted by these idiotic zones. Its gotten to the point major construction projects, like the Dutch airport are buying out farmers just to be able to expand one of their runways and fly more planes...

Nitrate emissions can be bad. Especially for humans if they inhale them. However not eating, or losing your livelihood Is objectively worse.
@ArnodJ
@ArnodJ Жыл бұрын
You are damn right!!! That's the problem but people only think they have to protect the farmer, the farmer is still a director of a company so they wanna make money. The 'nature' that we have is under severe pressure from our agroculture, that's why groups of nature preservation activists have started farms with nature inclusive food production. Like agroforestry and foodforest systems, even tho the numbers are far better then on a regular farm but it takes longer till it makes good money. The farmers refuse those systems because they rather drive their tractors 😅

True but be real the only options we have is how much compensation do we give the farners that need to be closed down and can we give farmers batter compensation for their products so they can feed them with less polluting fodder. The farmers themself can probable diversify a bit so the impact is less. But even with all of that there are just to many so some of them need to be "forcefully" bought out or simply terminated. Now there might be a little wriggle room in the margins but the dutch governement has done that way to much so i think the EU patients is wearing a bit thin. And rightfully so (and yes i'm born a bred Dutchy)
@JerehmiaBoaz
@JerehmiaBoaz Жыл бұрын
@@arturobianco848 There is hardly any wiggle room, if there was real wiggle room the current government would have used it to avoid this election loss. The point is that the Netherlands are forced by the highest Dutch court (which went to the highest EU court for advice) to implement the minimum EU environmental standards considering ammoinia and nitrous oxides emissions. This means the goals are set and the only wiggle room is in how much each of the emitting parties must reduce its emissions. The largest emitters in the Netherlands are agriculture (61% of emissions), road traffic (9%), industry (9%), air and water traffic (6%) and homes and offices (6%); from those numbers it's obvious that reducing agriculture emissions by 5% has the same effect as reducing every other sector by 90%, and that doesn't even take into consideration how small the agricultural sector is compared to the others with exception of air and water traffic (there are 17.4 million Dutch of which 50,000 are farmers). Because the emission reduction has to be large to meet EU standards, the only rational choice is to reduce agriculture emissions first because that's where the big gains are to be had.

@@JerehmiaBoaz There is always some wriggle room but i agree with you most of it is already spend. Its more like ok we gonna run 2 or 3 years late in some earia's but it just because it took longer then we planned excuse kind of thing. And nobody is gonna buy that unless we actually deliver on the rest and stick to plans that where already made. I do think voting on BBB because of the emissions was the most stupid thing you could do cause in the end it will only cost everybody more and more the biggest loosers are going to be farmers because more of them will have to go and there will be less money to buy them out. But that what you get if you don't think i have zero sympathy for those farmers who voted BBB and will be screwed over by their own choice. This video sums up everything pretty nicely. I would like to add that although the BBB got a huge victory, this does not guarantee their rise in Dutch politics or anyone elses fall. 4 years ago the FvD surprised everyone by becoming the largest party in the 'senate', but their influence over Dutch politics never became that big and they soon collapsed in on themselves as in the parliamental elections 2 years ago they fared far less well. Considering no one, incuding the party itself, expected the BBB to get more than 10 seats, filling 16 of them is a difficult task for a party only founded in 2019 and there likely will be some inexperienced personel taking on important jobs. So, despite Rutte becoming decreasingly popular, he might stay for while (again).

I felt it was missing some important information, farmers are free to produce our crops but NL has way too many animals pissing and shitting in a small area, most for export, this destroys our local environment in the name of profit for multinationals. The protests are bankrolled by the agroindustry that profits most from this animal agriculture, Dairy, Meat, the feed, and the machinery for the process. 2% of the population are farmers and you can bet regenerative farmers didn't vote for the BBB, it is a protest vote cleverly manipulated by an industry to protect its massive profits.

To clarify here, Rutte is incredibly pro-Europe, and a lot of people believe he is perfectly willing to sacrifice the country if it means looking good in the EU. Keep in mind, the Netherlands' agricultural exports last year amounted to over 120 billion euros, and now Rutte wants (to use the video's numbers) to close down a third of all farms here. There was bound to come a point where farmers (and people depending on them economically in the supply chain) would have had enough, and this is the result.

I am from Friesland and it’s also pretty obvious to me that everything that isn’t north holland is dead to him.

Great video, but I am missing the part where: 1. The nitrogen laws aren't Rutte or the government's idea's. It mostly all comes from the EU. 2. The goals that the BBB set, are unrealistic because of: The EU. We need to scale down and farmers are the biggest polluters in our country. The only way to not scale down is stepping out of the EU, and that will never happen because of the rich subsidies we get from the EU for farmers.

One very important thing that is left out, the BBB is in all provinces the biggest party but in like Drenthe (as shown) they have 30%+ votes. They can easily not implement what the government want because the provinces have to implement the rules but if they refuse (which BBB said they would) the government can make a law/some kind of arrangement but it won’t be implemented meaning that the country will stall. And probably when this happens new elections for the parlement will be held.

One thing I would like to point out is that the plans to eliminate so much livestock, didn't directly start the farmer protests. It was the massive farming corporations that would be losing the most money, which they of course didn't want to happen. The major corporations started financing the "Farmers Defence Force", the farmers that weren't happy with the government. The big corporations never speak about things like this. When (if I remember correctly) someone from "Friesland Campina" was invited to "Nieuwsuur" (a program by the public broadcaster that is infamous for being extremely critical), they declined the invitation because: "The farmers are fighting and need to be heard." Which is of course total nonsense. They want the farmers fighting for their cause, and if they would get the scrutiny they deserve, the farmers wouldn't be supported this much. I think it's scary that the biggest party in the Netherlands is basically a lobbyist group for corporate.

The farmers we are talking about are actually more like large meat factories. The Netherlands is a huge importer of soybeans mostly from Brasil, to feed its insanely large animal stockpile. 1.5 million cows, 11 million pigs, 100 million chickens, 1 million sheep. A large part of the Amazon rain forest has been destroyed to grow these soy beans to feed our livestock. And these animals produce high amounts of manure, which has been a problem for decades now in the Netherlands. The BBB is partly sponsored by large agricultural corporations who supply the animal feed, machines to operate the farms and all kinds of services. Like ForFarmers who produced 3.3 Billion euros last year. They are known to also aid the protesters, and even hired an agency to plan all of the protest, do marketing for it, and arrange the entre organization of the protest. So we are mostly talking about farms with thousands of animals, that not only produce harmful toxins for the environment but also emit large amounts of ‘fijnstof’ or particulate matter that creates health problems for humans on the farms and its surroundings. In some rural areas the ‘fijnstof’ emissions are higher than in large cities with lots of car traffic. This causes respiratory issues and even higher rates of cancer. So we are not talking about the old fashion idea of farming, with some chickens running around, several pigs rolling around in the mud and some cows in the meadow. These are industrial size farms that pollute often more than modern factories. The Netherlands has been the second largest agricultural exporter in the world for years now, right behind the USA. While being 220 times smaller in landsize. To be fair, this is partly caused by the export from Rotterdam harbour. But even if you take that into account, the Netherlands is still an agricultural powerhouse. Dutch farmers are the most productive in the world, but that comes with a huge price for the environment. What the government is proposing is to buyout the farmers with high emissions close to nature reserves. I understand this has a huge impact on the farmers effected by this, and maybe we need to look at alternatives. Like setting up a fund to allow these farmers to transform to sustainable farming. But what the government is doing is required by law, both national and from the EU. (Voted for by the Netherlands itself)

Also, they NEED to use so many pesticides (Some of which are literally banned in the whole of EU because they're extremely harmful to people) to keep up with demand of those dam soybeans. It's gotten so bad that the pesticides leak into our tap water even into Sao Paulo. It got tested and found around 22 different pesticides. But ultimately we as humans NEED the Amazon rain forest, it's essential to keep weather patterns consistent for everyone around the globe.

@@JaegerDreadful this is such an un-informed straw man argument. Replacing all food lost by canning meat with the beloved greens would require fast swaths of new farmland which in turn destroys local ecosystems not to mention threaten many species of small animals. A sensible reduction to meet the climate quota and an investment in technology that can help elleviate these problems in the future. This splitting of and mainly his decent into madness led to them getting decimated at these elections. A lot can happen to a person during covid apperently.

BBB is sponsored by Bayer/Monsanto (GMO). Look the director named Annemieke Tromp of the BBB. She works for Alfa accountants and advisors and that business supports the 2030 agenda. Then if you look into the marketing company of the BBB named ReMarkAble is a customer of the Bayer/monsanto gmo's. The founder and owner of ReMarkAble are Wim Groot and Henk Vermeer and those 2 people are secretary and vice director of the BBB and also the adress of the KvK of BBB is the same adress as Bayer/Monsanto their Dutch location. The only real political party that is here for the farmers are BVNL and FVD. (BBB stands for Build Back Better) and is a false "hero". They have to show colour now so i guess people wake up soon. My flag keeps hanging at blue white red, as we are still in danger as farmers.

I admire a politician who is willing to say what he or she truly thinks rather than one whose words are shaped by opinion polls. We need people to speak out and question official narratives. Conspiracy theories should be openly discussed and debated in public. The fact that opposing views are silenced or censored only makes conspiracy theories more attractive. Is it any wonder that millions of people like myself have completely lost trust in government and now see it as a form of mind control? My trust in journalists along with politicians and bankers is at an all time low. Thierry Baudet and Gideon van Meijeren will never be right about everything all the time, but I never get the feeling that they are intentionally lying to me--unlike Mark Rutte and Sigrid Kaag. I fear that Caroline van der Plas is just another wolf in sheep clothing. BBB's position on climate policy is downright ambiguous. The party wants to terminate the national climate agreement, to replace it immediately with a climate agreement that is more realistic. The same destination, but via a different route.

One correction: The Council of State has two independent parts. The advisory body for the government (officially headed by the King, but the King is not supposed to have any input) and the supreme court for administrative matters. Yes, the Netherlands has two supreme courts, one for punishment and civil affairs and one for administrative affairs. The latter has ruled that the government is legally bound by European law to limit nitrogen (the EU Nitrogen Directive) and uphold the quality of ecosystems in Natura 2000 areas enshrined in the EU Habitats directive. The EU Commission gave the Netherlands a derogation not to comply with the Nitrogen directive for more than a dozen years, but said, we won't do that anymore as there is no progress. So, the Council of State court had no other possibility than to say that any new nitrogen emission must fit into the current environmental quality. As a consequence, it is very hard to build houses, or for farmers to grow. They should even be removed or go to green farming when close to a Natura 2000 area. As you can see, there is no way the Farmer Citizen Party can change that without being fined by the EU high court for non-compliance with the Habitat directive and the Nitrogen directive. So, it is harsh, but the farmers (and industry, and cars, shipping, and aviation, etc) will have to comply, whoever is in power.

Almost all our important jobs in areas like education, police, public transit are overworked, underpaid and lack proper training. A focus on higher education has left us with a severe shortage of skilled laborers while society as a whole still looks down on them. A whole generation of students is stuck with massive depth. Integration policies only help to create more division. Right-wing extremism is on the rise, and finally a whole swath of the population is willingly supporting the corporate farmers that are not only raping our land for their own benefit, but act as if they're somehow an oppressed class when they're asked to take responsibility for their greed after decades of monopolizing agricultural and ecological legislation.

@@orktv4673 That's the point. They won't. Left parties have been so focused on urban issues that they have forgotten the other half of the population. Forcing already mildly conservative (but otherwise reasonable) people towards extreme politics. It not hard to reach farmers, ranchers and other rural types. As evidenced by BBB just throwing out some mildly populist rhetoric. Granted I can't speak to what Netherland farms would want. There was a time in my country where the ONLY pro rural party was a socialist/cooperativeist one. Sadly they (much like the Liberals and to a certain degree the conservatives) have gone full urbanite. Forcing our rural folk straight in to the arms of neo-fascists.
