For me the best PPV was either All In or Forbidden Door. Both had absolutely fantastic matches like Omega vs Osprey and MJF vs Adam Cole. The storytelling in the Cole vs MJF match was really compelling because of teasing of Cole turning on Max and the brain buster on the steps but we all know what the conclusion was of that story. Omega vs Osprey was everything we expected very hard hitting and a lot of action, Man that tiger driver 98 is still one of the most brutal things I’ve seen in a while

Totally agree with revolution at number 1. Between that iron man match man, swerve and hangman at full gear, okada vs Danielson, all in, and ospreay vs Omega, I feel like we've gotten to witness so much history being made this year.
@zoelotero10 ай бұрын
Personally: 1- Revolution: What looked like an underwhelming card at first aside a few matches turned into one of the greatest PPVs I've seen from any company (and the overall wrestling PPV of the year alongside the first night of Wrestlemania). MJF and Danielson had a MOTY candidate while Mox and Hangman had a brutal encounter to end their individual feud. Also, pretty much every match was very good 2- All In: What you said. It was more about the event itself; a company not named WWE selling 80,000+ tickets and getting more than 70,000 people in the stands of the UK's biggest stage is just insane. And to top it all off, the wrestling was also great 3- All Out: Another underwhelming card at first that turned into an amazing night of the best professional wrestling AEW can offer. Despite All In being one week prior and therefore having a card that resembled more a special TV episode week, they delivered, with a Main Event that ended the run that established the International title as the top midcard belt in the company (at least before the Triple Crown came in at Worlds End) 4- Forbidden Door: Another PPV that delivered, including a top 3 MOTY contender in Omega vs Ospreay, but also one that had more than a few disappointments. Still heel MJF defending the AEW World title in the opener against a Tanahashi that could barely run was understandable considering his character at the time (shootout that scheduled tweet of him celebrating a fast victory that ended up backfiring on him), but SANADA and the IWGP title deserved way better than Jack Perry, no offense to the former Jungle Boy, and Okada vs Danielson was a disappointment (even though they made up for it this week in the Tokyo Dome) 5- Full Gear: It was good. Some great moments all around, but I wouldn't put it alongside the previous 4. Swerve vs Hangman was by far the MOTN, and even though the Main Event was overbooked I didn't mind it as much as some people did, even though I would've had the Devil revealed there instead of at World's End 6- WrestleDream: It was okay. Nice tribute to Inoki and an all-time moment with Copeland's debut as well as some great wrestling all around, specially that Danielson vs Sabre Jr. match with Mox being gold on commentary. But it didn't feel as important as most PPVs imo 7- Double or Nothing: It's really close between the bottom two, but I'll give DoN the edge here. The first half was one of the worst any major company (by this meaning WWE, AEW and the Bushiroad companies) put out in 2023, and maybe in the 2020s as a whole, with the worst crowd I've ever seen in a wrestling PPV. However, the second half was very good and the final two matches were two of my favorite of the year; the pillars four way was an emotional rollercoaster from Sammy's entrance till the end as well as a great display from all four men, and even though I preferred 2022's edition, the Anarchy in the Arena match was brutal 8- Worlds End: Same as DoN for the first half (except for the crowd being somewhat decent), or maybe even worse considering that 8-men tag match where Jericho and the allegations against him were more of a story than the bout itself, and while the final three matches delivered+the Devil reveal was heartbreaking (even if predictable), I just don't see it better than Double or Nothing's, so it's last place for the day Maxwell Jacob Friedman's world ended Overall a great year of PPVs. Not a single event you can categorize as bad per se, and having two events that will go down as two of the best of at least 2023.

I think AEW should stick to 6 PPVs a year. Each would get about 2 months to build some great matches and promote them as must see. If I were to choose the 6, I'd say they'd be their big 4 (All Out, Revolution, Full Gear, Double or Nothing), Forbidden Door, and a specialty. Every other year the specialty could be All In and the other years it could be one offs like WrestleDream or World's end.

Being in the building for Forbidden Door definitely pushes it to the number 1 spot for me. It was absolutely electric in Toronto that night. AEW since the beginning has set the bar for its PPV so high that an alright show is no longer deemed acceptable (and even more so when also WWE has overall increased the quality of its PLEs under HHH), and some of this year's event were just ok. My list: 1 - ALL IN (I may be biased as it was the first event I attended live) 2 - REVOLUTION (really good top to bottom, fantastic main event MOTY contender) 3 - WRESTLEDREAM (again, great action in all the card) 4 - ALL OUT (the dark horse: expectations were low between poor construction and the Punk drama, but the wrestlers absolutely killed it) 5 - FORBIDDEN DOOR (generally very solid, but both world title matches I found underwhelming; the main event was a bit below my absurdly high expectations, but still a great match, especially considering how Danielson fought with a broken arm) [significantly below] 6 - FULL GEAR (the overbooked WWE-style main event was its worst sin; luckily the absurdly brutal Hangman vs Swerve and the surprisingly good TBS triple threat saved it from being a waste of time) 7 - WORLD'S END (this felt like I was watching a special episode of Dynamite on PPV, but its saving grace was the fantastic Christian vs Copeland; it did not mind the sudden and somewhat anticlimatic conclusions of Kingston vs Mox and MJF vs Joe, to me those gave more "realism" to pro-wrestling) 8 - DOUBLE OR NOTHING (I had to sit through over 3 somewhat forgettable hours to finally see two great matches, which was even harder to bear when cardboard cutouts seemed to have replaced the usual loud and invested AEW fans in the arena)

I went to World's End at Nassau Coliseum, it was a very good crowd, even if the arena only held less than 10,000 people. The concessions ran out of food somehow and we had to go to the basement. The line to get in was horrendous, as the arena only had one gate open before the private security had to open more doors. But my favorite match was Adam Copeland vs. Christian Cage because they went in the crowd near where I was sat and Adam jumped off the Railing onto Christian. I actually liked the Titantron they had there, and I wish to see it again. I mean there were some matches that we didn't like, like the TBS Title match, and I ended up leaving before the Main Event was over because 4 hours for PPVs is just too much.

Having now had a few months to mull it over, I will say the Full Gear main event is my least-favorite booking decision AEW has ever made. MJF vs Jay White was a match FOUR YEARS in the making. We would watch Jay White in 2019 New Japan and say “Holy shit this young genius is the future of the industry!” and we would watch MJF in 2019 AEW and say “Holy shit this young genius is the future of the industry!” and we would wonder what would happen when these two era-defining prospects inevitably found their way into a program opposite one another. And when that moment finally came, AEW somehow managed to bring BOTH their momentums to a screeching halt - Jay White’s by having him job to a one-legged man, and MJF’s by turning him into Super Cena. Through most of this down year for AEW, I’d been a more optimistic supporter than the general internet consensus, but that was the moment that really killed the magic for me. I frankly haven’t been able to look at AEW in quite the same light ever since. And yes, it tastes extra salty because the whole rest of Full Gear 2023 was indeed an incredible show.

For me it goes 8. Forbidden Door 7. Double or Northing 6. Worlds End 5. WrestleDream 4. Full Gear 3. All Out 2. Revolution 1. All-In Objectively, I think Forbidden Door is better than Double or Nothing and Worlds End. But on a personal level, I just find about half of its matches to be pretty unmemorable, and to not have much stakes. There's only two matches where it's not painfully obvious who the winner will be (Kenny Omega vs Will Ospreay, and Bryan Danielson vs Kazuchika Okada). That said, I still like it overall with matches like the four way for the International Champion, Danielson vs Okada, and of course, Kenny Omega vs Will Ospreay, which is one of my favorite matches of the year. Just my least favorite of the PPVs this year, and maybe if I watch more NJPW, my mind will change.

Bold decision to blame the live reaction at Double or Nothing on the Las Vegas crowd and not the poor booking and tired spot monkey matches. If the live crowd is silent and not into the show, then it’s the company’s fault. Obviously nothing moved the crowd enough to be into the show.

I wasn't as down on DoN so I don't think I'd even have it at 2nd to last, but I think World's End is the worst ppv AEW has ever done. The big part for me and the people I watch with pointed out, I usually stand at points on a show where shit is intense. But that night, I just sat there bored. The last 3 matches were good, but they didn't ramp up to a finidh that would make me get to my feet. I think the thing they all had in common was shock finishes out of nowhere, especially Eddie/ Mox and Joe/ MJF.
