All 74 Chickens Sick | Mycoplasma And How We Will Move Forward

I have raised poultry since 1961. I had MG brought in to my flock, from someone who said they had 6 sick birds. This was about 35 years ago. I didn't even know this person had chickens, or I never would have let her near my birds. I asked her about the symptoms, and I said, "Oh, NO. Sounds like you have MG, and now my flock will have it, too." Sure enough, it showed up in a couple of weeks. Back then, my lack of bio security cost me 250 chickens, 30 adult turkeys, and 50 adult pheasants.... not counting all the chicks. As I said, that was about 35 years ago... After destroying ( i e. killing) my entire flock, I NEVER let anyone else walk around my birds. Haven't had another problem with MG in the 35 years, since. BIO SECURITY is the BEST practice for disease prevention.

You’re welcome! It is really horrific to watch the bacteria, cause so much pressure to build it behind the eyes. Two of our hens had their eyes rupture from the pressure There are several people that are able to keep their flock, they simply don’t add any new birds to their flock, and they treat their symptoms for their whole life. That’s not a good or ethical decision for a small hatchery. 💔

Thank you for this video. I finally found someone who spoke out. You couldn't of Said it any better. My farm, beautiful health chickens and our joy has been stripped due to this same disease. All things were going awsome for 2 years. My flock of 30 heathy birds have all been infected within 4 days. All brought in by an outside rooster who had no symptoms. I'm pissed, depressed, angry, exhausted and disappointed in the lack of treatment available. If dogs could catch this they would have a vaccine and 5 different treatments within a year. Because it's livestock they don't care. My happy, funny and full of life birds will all have to be culled now.

We also had the same issue. We brought a new rooster in and we lost 10 out of 18 birds as well as 9 chicks from a breeder. That was the same place we got our rooster from as well.

I know this was posted a while ago but I wanted to say thanks for the video. The farming community is so generous and helpful. Im so glad you found supportive people. My flock has MG. It’s a small backyard flock so I’m keeping them as a closed flock. It’s very hard, I have to mange symptoms that flare up like right now with the weather change. Im glad you aren’t blaming yourself and focusing on moving forward. It’s hard to to get discouraged and blame yourself. Im doing that right now because I lost one recently. With chickens the good far outweighs the bad though. In hard times i remember I’ve been blessed to enjoy the good things about them. Hard times a difficulty comes with everything. I will “like” in support of your channel but clearly there’s no liking this. I am so sorry for you and your family. I used to volunteer at the Waterfowl Rescue and due to my health issues had to stop because of the bird flu going around. It broke my heart knowing all they had to go through and how you don’t have to go through this ever again. The measures they had to put in place (hazmat was an actual reality) to protect the animals was extreme and cost them more than just money. mine has went lame in her left foot was right foot & switched over night! Lower appetite. 8 month old leghorn., no sneezing or anything like lung issue. vet thinks mareks! I dont ,. happened to her last August 23 was worse whole leg went out! Vet put on meloxocam & a antibiotic amoxcillian. i dont know if i need to start DENAGUARD! Any input welcomed.

My heart goes out to you. I am currently having to make the decision on what to do with my flock. So I know a little of the pain you went through. I have 40 chickens, and we did mostly selling of eating eggs and hatching chicks for ourselves. 2024 was the year I wanted to get into NPIP testing and hatching to better my various breeds as well as sell to those around me. Unfortunately I brought a new rooster into my flock to start the process of creating pens of different breeds. The rooster went through over a month of quarantine. He was completely healthy and normal. Unfortunately it turned out he was an asymptomatic carrier for both MG and MS.... Now I'm faced with the decision of culling my beloved named pets (some of which are 5 years old and had since the beginning) or keeping them as a closed flock and sticking to selling eggs for eating. I also have close friends with chickens and I don't want to be a constant threat of exposure to their birds either. So I don't know what I'm going to do yet. But I do know it would be devistating to part with my birds....

Have your chickens recovered from this disease? My chickens now have this infection 68 chickens, has this infection and only 6 of them are left to recover. Very dangerous. I hope that the last ones that have with this infection and not recovered yet do not die.😢😢😢😢 Its to hard to manage all of them in one time … I’m so sad 😢😢😢

Ps- dont drive yourself insane. I used to be neurotic like that too but in the end I realized i was literally driving myself insane. We cant control everything and personally i think i was crazy to think i could. Yes practice good hygiene but at the end of the day it is the exposure that breeds healthy immune systems not sterile environments. If one has it they all have been exposed . Period. Trying to act like we can control microbes that we cant even see is crazy. There have been studies done on the immune systems of "dirty" farm kids vs "sterile" environment city kids. Can you guess which were healthier and had better immune systems? Ill give you hint- the sterile environment did those children ZERO favors. Anyways - praying for you. I think the Internet tends to hype things up in a way that can get us all in knots. Would we expect our children to never get sick or say someone was a bad parent if they did get sick? No way! But chicken hatchery's and breeders are held to that standard. It makes no sense. We cant possibly control everything. Its life. Hugs and prayer!

Oh no I’m so so sorry to hear that. I really recommend testing before making the decision. Also, look up symptoms of Coryza, they can be difficult to tell apart. Coryza is treatable!!

So sorry. I used to wear boots that I kept in my feed room. I would only use those rubber boots for my chickens. It was a pain to change shoes but it kept them healthy. Maybe you can do that in future.

My research shows Mycoplasma Gallisepticum can cause just lameness. my hen couldnt walk right foot but over night switched to left and right okay! No respertory issues. Denaguard is known to help them.

Sweetheart, please remember that it is very often transmitted by wild birds, in the ground, and carried on dust in the breeze. You may have had zero to do with the transmission, and your biosecurity may be just fine. Obviously if you Introduced an infected rooster before quarantine that wasn't prudent, but I've seen flocks infected with no possible source other than wildlife. It happens. You can keep the flock isolated and healthy until they die and use them for other purposes like eggs and meat. It's not a death sentence, but it is a prison sentence.

I am currently going through this and unfortunately like you mentioned it came in through a rooster. That rooster went through a very long quarantine process before being allowed into the flock. This is a tough position for a hatchery. We purchased broad breasted whites from a hatchery and they gave our entire flock mycoplasma so it seems some things will always be out of your control. As we have learned about contagions over the last few years.

I'm so sorry. I stumbled on this video while seeking answers on the best way to move forward. I am also in the process of culling my flock due to mycoplasma. I was at 126 birds. Also, I am all the way across the world, in Kenya. It's tough. I'm mourning my loss, because I gave them a lot of love, and in return they did so well, until this disease came in. I’m so sorry you went through this too. It’s so so sad!!! I had a really hard time finding facts about how to make sure there was no mycoplasma left behind in the brooders or coops. I found conflicting evidence on multiple websites and got very discouraged. I cleaned as best we could, disinfected with some recommended products and let everything be exposed to sunlight as much as possible to let the UV rays kill the bacteria. I feel so bad for you. My chickens just came down with mycoplasma, and I decided to cull my entire flock of 52 birds. My concern with what you stated in your video about eggs getting ready to hatch is that mycroplasma is transferable through the eggs, so those chickens will be born carriers of microplasma. I sincerely hope that you did not go through with hatching those chickens and selling them.

We use respirex from vetinova to prevent those issues, and coxiflex is good for coccidia n coryza too

Oxine kills everything including avian influenza. you'll get two products oxine and the activator to mix as directed. I'll sanitize my water containers at least once every one to two weeks or before moving it to another coop. I'll keep a one gallon pump sprayer with oxine for anytime use as needed. Hope this helps. My first flock contracted infectious Coryza and after that started my biohazard precautions. I was able to contact a lab within my state to send swap test to find out what it was. Same symptoms as the creator in this video and I was just as devistated. 🙁 I collected eggs to hatch and try to keep my original bloodlines but hatch rates were very low.

Biosecurity its very important when racing chicken ... I do not accept friends at mine farm ,and if anyone ocmes must wear special protection gear and must desinfect themselves before going in .... they are measurements we can take to prevent deceases in our farms. thanks for sharing. For those who have backyard chickens and who aren’t breeding like she is, please know this isn’t a death sentence. Chickens can continue to live a life even if infected. If you can keep your flock closed and treat them as they become sick, they can pull through and continue living. Ones with very low immune systems may not make it or have secondary health issues. It’s of course different for everyone in what they can handle or wish to try and handle. It can be tough, but you have a choice on how you want to handle it. I have a MG positive flock. I have a flare up every couple of months. Sometimes they make it and sometimes they do not. Theres a lot of information out there on ways to support them. 🤍

I don’t think most people who add animals to and take meat from the flock will agree with this. You are just perpetuating a health concern. I think you have to plan and end to it and start over after sanitation. Otherwise all your new animals will just become another patient of yours.

There is NO real "cure," like she says. It's listed as one of the "Reportable Diseases." These include Avian Flu, anthrax, tuberculosis, etc., and are "diseases that are potentially devastating to the livestock industry." Strict bio security is the best prevention.

I’ve included some steps and advice copied from a fellow Hatcher who walked me through my testing www.neobits.com/edge_biologicals_t_0047_bhi_broth_3ml_fill_p14497926.html a.co/d/ihUEbAz Swab testing will allow you to test everyone without having to kill birds. You can start culling when you have your results back and you will know the status of your entire flock, not just individuals. Technically, the swabs need to be submitted wet (in a medium). They don't have the research to say that dry swab tests are as accurate as wet, so your results should you choose to do the dry submission will come back with a disclaimer. Dr. Aziz seemed to feel the dry submissions were sufficient (they did pick up mycoplasma in asymtomatic birds). If you want to use a medium to ensure the gold standard result, I called and got the information on the medium type and tube that needs to be used.
