Also, let them own swaths of land, the very foundation of any power in pre-industrial society." No way that could end badly. 11:55 Who were the Fujiwara able to rule as regens? Were not the emperors the supreme holders of power? I think that an important Part of information is missing here.
@kokuinomusume4 жыл бұрын
To sum it up, the Fujiwaras married their daughters (or sisters) to the emperors and were regents to their grandsons (or nephews). The emperors were usually children or teens, and abdicated (and took Buddhist holy orders) as soon as they had fathered a male toddler or two on their Fujiwara wives, to while away their time as retired emperors in their mansions in the outskirts of Kyoto, making poetry and having sexy fun times with the court attendant ladies. That's why in the portrait shown in the video the retired emperor Go-Shirakawa is dressed like a Buddhist monk. This was called "insei" or "cloistered rule", since the retired emperors retained a lot of political clout, and unlike the reigning emperors, were actual adults who did political stuff, so suddently there were two or three emperors and retired emperors at the same time who could issue contradictory orders. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cloistered_rule You'll see how fun it was in the Gempei wars videos.
