What is astounding is looking at the number of people interested in these things. This information used to be magic. You had to go and talk to the old grizzled German gunsmith and depending of his mood that day you may get information, if you were lucky. Today with the shared wealth of information on the web the shooting sports are going to new levels and it’s fantastic. Terrific video.

You mentioned "those who do flushing during reaming" you should all be either flushing with coolant from the front of the barrel or at minimum use compressed air at around 25 - 40 PSI . any milling job can be ruined with swarf scoring your surface.

I'm wondering about providing cases and pills to help set the headspace and throat depth...as I like option to seat near the lans, and hope to avoid working my brass...or overworking..etc.. Maybe I might hope for a tighter neck, shorter throat and similar Headspace to shoulder. Without driving gunsmith bezerk...ha

On the large case high cutting resistance thing, I have seen a couple people mention that high taper long cartridges like 300 hh are the worst when it comes to testing their gunsmithing skills. The entire reamer is taking a decent chipload versus a minimal tapered reamer cutting mostly shoulder and minimally on the body. Steady chambering and heavily tapered reamers seem to be a recipe for chatter and difficulty.

Pacific tool and die company and they have great chamber reamers since back before WW2 and lots of other precision tools . I have ordered a lot of chamber reamers for them in different calibers and all were perfect to me. And they said if I had any kind of problem they would get professional help for me and if I needed gauges for my lathes or milling machine that would set me up with a technician that knows a lot about it and for the type of machine I'm useing . I have even got full barrel reamer that cut so precise and smooth I was totally scary with the results it was almost like the barrel was polished and was ready for rifleing and they sent me a lot of information on useing the tool for the best turn out. I used there reamer for full barrel ream and I have button rifle a muzzle loader rifle barrel with a one in 36 twist rate and I'm hitting targets with a .410 dia one inch across flat's 42 inch long barrel. Useing paper patch boolits and hitting a 12 inche steel at 400 yards using 100 GR. Weight by digital scale and not by volume. Because volume is not accurate. I took my no.11 percussion nipple out and change it with a 209 conversion nipple I purchased from Cabela's for 30 something dollars and it has a built in fireing pin and a rubber o ring seal and I have never had it to fail no matter how much rain came down. I had to trim bottom skirt off of the hammer but did it so you would never know it was even on there. Flip up Sharpe's back sight with peep and a Lyman aperture front sight with level bubble and adjustable left and right front sight for fine tuning and up or down front sight screw up or down. I think I have a one of a kind double set triggers Pennsylvania Lancaster long rifle and I use a fiber glass electric fence rod that's black and has brass tips for cleaning and pushing bullets down the barrel firmly. I found a cheap none breakable ram rod that fits perfectly in my barrel and piping .

Is that the 5.6x39mm that is based on the 7.62x39 case and is the cartridge that 6.5 Grendel is developed from?
@the1andonlySherlock
@the1andonlySherlock Жыл бұрын
@@eloiseharbeson2483 Yes, it is 7.62x39 necked down to .22 cal. Its a popular starting case for a variety of other cartridges, such as 6.5 Grendel, 6mm ARC, 6 PPC, 22 PPC, and 20 PPC. The notable thing in contrast to those cartridges though is that it retains the same case taper as 7.62x39, whereas all those other ones are much straighter.

So, speaking of: 8x57 Mauser rimmed cartridge, (8x57 IRS), necked up for a .338 bullet. This would be a replacement for .303 British when you need to re-barrel the rifle, and would likely make a good Lever Action round as well. I spent quite a lot of time going over SAAMI specs looking for a potential replacement and this is what I came up with. .338 doesn't push the bore and rifling out too much while allowing for wear on the original .303, and the 8.57 IRS Brass isn't that far out of spec either, allowing rechambering without significant alterations. Overall it would be similar to .338 Federal with a longer cartridge allowing for more powder and better velocities. I considered making my own Wildcat cartridge off this, but the cost is a bit outside of my range right now. The cartridge itself isn't that big of a deal, much like re-barreling a rifle as far as cost goes, but having a custom reamer made for the cartridge is where I dropped the idea. Still, I like the idea and it would be interesting if someone decided to try it out. The idea is to have a cartridge that you could re-barrel something like an old Lee Enfield to without compromising the authenticity of the rifle or changing barrels or parts. Side note: I was thinking about Twist rate too, but I forgot what I decided on. 1:11 maybe. And I had considered trimming the case too, but that would be largely dependent on re-chambering the rifle and whether it would require it. Maybe a couple mm off the case length at most I think. Its been awhile since I compared the SAAMI Specs. The Brass and Bullets are also available from Lapua, with options in the type of bullet that would allow for both Magazine fed and Lever Action variants. I was also looking at this for dual purpose, as it could be a good replacement for a .32 WS cartridge as well, (Model 1894 Winchester). That being said, I did find one potential issue. The barrel on a Lee Enfield doesn't have a lot of substance at the end of the taper, which means it might require shortening, and while that's not impossible it was a bit of a deterrent. I doubt it would be a problem for an 1894 Winchester that was chambered in .32 WS, but for the Lee Enfield it's sort of potentially problematic. I don't know that that would be an issue however; it's just speculation on my part.

At gun shows and in the collections of friends, I've see some beautiful bolt-actions chambered for the .300 Savage. Alas, the only way to get a "New" rifle like this is to have it made special. And not a whole lot of Smiths seem to be very familiar with this cartridge or the guns that use it. So, I'd like to buy a reamer for the .300 Savage just to be able to loan it out to a gunsmith when I've decided on exactly how I want my rifle made.
