I was used to cats, my Shar pei dogs are like cat-dogs, very neat. They are not low maintenance, ear cleaning--and it is different for the miniature, her ear drum is closer to the top, nail trimming--their quick can sometimes grow close to the tip of the nail so one has to be verycareful not to hit the quick, and they are also a strong hunting breed in addition to guard dogs and companion dogs, so they are not that great on a leash, some may be okay. I will mention a few things because when I first owned dogs, my Shar pei dogs, I wish I knew ahead of time what I am mentioning, such as what are the best leashes to use since I tried several: 1. For cleaning the home, use a strong vacuum with a HEPA filter on their beddings, floors and carpets, this will help the dogs from getting itchy from microscopic annoyances like mites. Then you do not have to have your dog on tough anti-itch meds like Apoquel. Washing their beddings in vinegar helps get rid of mites. 2. Be careful about the dog food. Shar pei dogs are not supposed to eat too much cruciferous veggies like broccoli, bok choi, kale, because it can negatively affect their uptake of iodine, and then they can get sick. Instead of rice for fiber in their food, I use Chia seeds which are low carbs and have omegas. Rice can turn into sugar helping to cause fungus. Don't use sugary treats, use giblets as treats like livers from beef or chickens, chicken kidneys, etc. I ended up cooking my dogs' food and adding dog vitamin supplements. Add a small amount of apple cider vinegar (not a different type of vinegar) to their food. I always look up food choices, such as I find that clover sprouts and sunflower sprouts are okay for dogs. My dogs love raw, unsalted cashews as treats. 3. My dogs are not the greatest on walks, but love to go on walks. They have a very strong hunting instinct, and I live in the countryside--they see a rabbit, they will run in front of a car to get it, jump off a cliff running after something. They are totally peaceful and obedient until they see game. Anyway, the double bungee leashes on the marketplace are the best with them, this gives them the opportunity to explore, but still controlling as the bungee dog leashes have several handles along the leash, and you can attach several of them for a longer leash. I use padded dog harnesses instead of a collar. 4. Shar pei dogs need to go to the bathroom at least three times a day, not twice a day that many dogs seem to be able to handle. So, one should remember to let them out in the yard at least three times a day--morning, afternoon, evening. 5. Sleeping helps Shar pei dogs stay healthy. Shar pei dogs do not bark much unless they were taught to do that; whatever, barking is good for dog's lungs. They may not bark much naturally since they may be hunting in that fashion for centuries. So, let it be. 6. Do not enclose them in a small area, or shut doors in their faces, as they are very sensitive. I let my dogs roam all over the house, and sleep where they want. They have doggie beds but sometimes they sleep on the couch or on my bed. I put a drop of Himalayan cedar oil on my hand and rub my hands, then rub that along their back hair, it helps them not have ticks and fleas. 7. My dogs usually have many vaccines, like the Lyme Disease vaccine. 8. Shar pei dogs usually like to play a lot, love learning something new with treats, love affection. 9. It is hot in the summer here even in the countryside, and Shar pei dogs generally do not like very hot weather, so air conditioning and fans where they usually rest may be a good idea. Shar pei dogs love to travel, but one has to be careful about the car temperature, and not leaving them in a car when it is warm outside, even if it is 70 F degrees, the sun can overheat the car very fast inside. 10. Make sure to keep up-to-date with the grooming of their ears and nails. If you have no experience with that, VET technicians usually can help show you how to do that properly. May this be helpful. Best of luck.

My girl is a sharpei mix (70 pounds, brindle colored with a straight tail) but looks 100% sharpei other than those points. She's protective, loyal and so smart! It would take only 1 training session to teach her a trick. Also she hates getting wet to the point that she will walk around or jump over a wet patch on the ground when going for walks. My dog loves the entire family but is most attached to me. She always has to be next to or touching me. If anyone is thinking about getting a sharpei, get a mixed one. To the people who doubt a shar pei's ability to defend its owner from other people and from other dogs has never seen one in action. They bite HARD, those teeth are sharp as crap, and they're unexpectedly fast. When I play catch with mine she seems to move on a different plane of speed than I can even track. They are also really good at understanding situations, I've had someone try to steal her and my bulldog on a walk at night and she tore that dude up the moment he grabbed the leash. People talk so much crap about this breed but have virtually no experience.

One bit of advice would be to get a dna test through embark or another service as soon as you get your dog. They now show if your dog has the associated genes for Shar Pei Fever. I did it with my current pei and have had him on the medication that manages the disease. It will definitely keep your dog happy and safer in the long run if you know if your dog is predisposed to the condition!!

Sometimes they can get a high temperature if they do not get enough rest, sleep. Dogs usually sleep between fourteen to eighteen hours a day. I give my dogs GSE (Grapefruit Seed Extract), a few drops on their treats if they seem to have a temperature. GSE is a holistic cure for several ailments in humans, horses, and dogs. It is a holistic dure for Giardia. I am not saying for people to definitely use this. It has helped my dogs often. And, I found out about it online. I have never used a thermometer with them, I can tell by feeling underneath their arms. It is better to use non-intrusive thermometers with pets, like the ones you can hold and stay away from them, or put between their toes or under their arms.

Our family has had this Breed since 1988 when we got a fawn horse coat female from Lava Kennels. We couldn't have asked for a better and healthier dog. Mai Ling lived to be fourteen years old. However, there seems to be a few rude and uninformed people commenting on this very well produced video with an interesting and informative narrative by Susanna and Rose. Breeders work hard to improve their Breed. They don't make a lot of money. In fact, they're lucky if they break even. The only people who make money hand over fist are puppy mills where they don't care about the welfare of their dogs as long as they produce litter after litter. A good Breeder cares about their dogs.

I once woke up at 3:00am and took him out, he began to feel although I couldn't see anything he sensed it, then I saw a man running towards me, and it was all I could do to hold onto him, he was standing on his hind legs and bearing his teeth and just growling and trying to get to this man, what he thought was a danger to me. This man saw this dog and ran the other way, I don't know the mans intentions, but my dog knew he was dangerous, they will protect you at the cost of their lives, as long as I told him you were okay, he wouldn't be obvious about it, like I said he would growl at my uncle, while he sat by my Daddy, not loud, but loud enough to let you know him know would protect you till the end, he loved my daddy dearly. My Dad always said that cruiser was his favorite grandpuppy. So funny.

My shar pei Honey was bread with a blue shar pei and had a litter of 5 puppies. Blue brush coat boy, black brush coat boy, 2 greyish/thorn girls and an apricot bear coat boy. We kept the bear coat boy and called him Chewy (like Star Wars chewbacca) and they are just the most wonderful things ever. Honey is actually the niece to our previous shar pei Millie.

Very fine dogumentary! I’ve owned 3 Shar Pei, all 3 coat types: horse, brush & bear. Very loyal, but the Bear Coat Shar Pei had the sweetest, most docile personality. She was a lovely child and loved everyone. So sweet. Very rewarding to own this breed.

Thank you for this video! My alpha pei girl is amazing! She loves people but not other dogs. Only dog she likes is ones that immediately lay down belly up, then she prances around them & is on her way. She's my first pei. From my experience & understand about the breed, if you're looking for a lap cuddler, peis aren't for you. If they lay across your feet, they love you! And my little one slipped out the door, ran down the street & fought two pitties at the same time. Big vet bills for the pitties but my gal didn't have a scratch on her! And my hubby always joked that they pulled a trick on us & inbred a big cat. She's my babyyyy!!

Here's what I will say: thank you for producing a very well done short introductory film with two fine women who have devoted their lives to the betterment of this specific breed. There are likely to be thousands of ignorant and uninformed, uneducated, bias-ridden comments on any of your video threads, particularly some of these rarer breeds that have been referred to as "bastardized." These are coming from people who generally do not understand the real concept of what preservation breeding truly means and the devotion it takes to protect a breed and better it with each generation, especially having come from a virtually extinct gene pool. People who rally around bashing anything on the Internet I find rely heavily on said resource to inform what they "know" about a breed (or various other topic). If you do not own, train, breed, medically treat, or fervently study any breed of dog, you are not an expert on it. Relying on various social media platforms to properly and thoroughly educate individuals on all that was, is, and will be a Shar-Pei is an unfathomable notion. I celebrate this video and who stand behind it-this information is correct, but it is also only a 25 minute long feature that highlights the most significant information for the average person. I encourage everyone that feels so inclined to say they "know" this breed and make claims that are unfounded to take a step back and ask themselves really how educated and unbiased they are because most of the comments I read are riddled with opinions that are not founded on experience or proper study. Go to a library, go to a dog history museum, go to the breed clubs' historians, read books; go to shows and ask the people who are handling the dogs you're interested in. This video channel is a fabulous resource and I applaud the effort put into all the videos, but it's just a starting point for each breed. The Chinese Shar-Pei standard can be found on the breed club website cspca.com and it fully serves as the proper educational and historical resource the breed bashers should really consider investigating. It's too bad the Internet, social media, and backyard breeders have painted such a negative view of my breed in so many's eyes. This is not what the purpose of preservation breeding is supposed to be: it's about keeping the health and temperament at the forefront of the breeders' minds in protecting the dogs and keeping their history alive. Calling them "useless" I personally found completely harsh and offensive, especially considering that I take mine to obedience class every week, do therapy programs, and am training for agility with my female. They are highly intelligent and purposeful breeding preserves their all purpose farm dog capabilities, and you are foolish if you choose to believe that they are weak, soft, stupid or unsound as a generalization of the breed. Well socialized and hand reared Shar-Pei puppies are non such a thing. They may be fixated on their one person, but a sound dog is never overly timid, fearful, or aggressive. Assertive, powerful, smart, and excessively loyal... they can do it all if you invite them to it, and I cannot overstate how significant the natural guarding and protection ability inherently withdraws from my dogs when they feel I am being threatened or challenged. To my friends who poured a lot into this video, thank you. To all else who choose to explore the breed more, I encourage you to do so... without relying on only one source of information. That is never a way to become an expert on anything; especially if you have no experience with it.

The two of you are stunningly beautiful! I really enjoyed this video. I can't find anything on KZbin about the proper weight and body condition of the Shar pei. You both seem to be very responsible breeders so, I'm going to assume that the dogs you show in your video are; an excellent example for how my boy should eventually look. Thank you for all the great info! ❤

I am a proud owner of a Pei ❤️. My Great Dane, Atlas, he is 10 years old, and my retired SD. We ended up with our Pei, Braemar out of a miracle. They get along perfectly and makes my heart happy. I can tell you, he is hot tempered when being handled by someone else other than his mamma (he is a Show dog, but entering his 8th month of being a hot tempered Aries boi). In all seriousness, he is being trained to become my next SD, doing my best by him to get him properly trained. He is smart, oh so smart. Clean indeed! Like a cat, constantly cleaning himself. I do keep him cleaned weekly and bathed bimonthly. He is a soft boi but my husband is indeed allergic to him and he doesn’t care. We are over the moon with our Braemar 🥹🥰

My dogs used to have ear issues, but I listened to what my mom had said when she was alive, that it was probably very tiny bugs that lived outside the dogs' ears and would crawl inside, so when I wash their ears, I make sure to wash around the outside of their ears, especially in the back crevices. Since then, they do not have any ear problems. I just have to clean their ears once every three weeks or a month, instead of twice a week. This may not be the case with other dogs, but it worked for my dogs.

If you bath her more often, once every week or so, completely dry her the best you can. I like using Mane and Tail shampoo, it’s made for horses. If they are itching, I like a oatmeal based shampoo. 100% got rid of the smell. But drying is important, if not, bacteria will form in the wrinkles, that’s your smell.

If u want ur dog to stop being stinky, stop feeding it carbs/grains/sugars. They feed yeast and the yeast grows in their skin and ears. Clean ears often and your dog will NEVER stink again.

Most of them suffer from Entropian because of how wrinkled they've been bred to be today. Far from the healthy original version.

Nothing could be further from the truth. Lava kennels has been known for their longevity and years and years of dedication are her legacy. She is one of the record holders at 16 1/2 years old and that should be the goal of every breeder. It's sad that some people watch a video and feel the need to be critical and act like instant know it alls.

Great news since this video was made - the test the ladies spoke about regarding the possibility of a dog to get SPAID is now available in the US. YAY! There is one correction I'd like to mention; SPAID actually stands for Shar-Pei Auto INFLAMMATORY Disease - not autoimmune. This was once referred to as FSF (Familial Shar-Pei Fever) but with further research it became named SPAID. I don't remember if the ladies mentioned the STSS (Streptococcus Toxic Shock Syndrome) disease. It is a very serious disease which is due to a bacterial and/or inflammatory infection. Should the body temp get over 104 degrees or there are visible symptoms, if not treated immediately, the infection can become septic and the dog is very likely to not survive the oncoming septic shock. There is similar & often comorbid STSS-like necrotizing fasciitis infection that can affect the skin, muscle & internal organs with the same end result. Early recognition & immediate treatment can be life saving! SPAID is often the catalyst for these two diseases - so, with the new test that indicates the possible likelihood of SPAID in a dog, responsible breeding will help lessen the chances of a dog getting SPAID and will be pivitol in decreasing these diseases. The really great news is that more and more breeders are breeding utilizing the results of the test & hopefully this will be a huge breakthrough in avoiding SPAID, Et Al !!

I have a bonemouth, she is the image of the picture of the bonemouth shown, notice not larger ears, small tight ears. What the American breeders did to the Shar Pei is unforgivable!!! They introduced all of the problems with skin, eyes, ears. The reason for the brushcoat and more wrinkles came from genetic mutations from a shrinking genepool not for any other reason.

Hey Zeke. I know it wouldn't be easy to get to China to film the bone mouth dogs. If you ever do I'll be watching. If you filmed this to satisfy your viewers, well, totally understandable. Judging by the comments below there are clearly plenty of people out there who dislike what Western breeding has done. I'm with them, but I already put enough critiques on some of these videos. You do great work! Thank you! Hoping you can do Rhodesian Ridgebacks at some point. :)

My first shar pei was a pure bred, this time I have a golden pei. She is a shar pei, golden retriever cross. I was told that people should not cross breed shar pei, but I am so happy with my girl. A lady was about to have her golden retriever show dog spade and the neighbours pure bred shar pei jumped the fence and she became pregnant. She had 4 puppies and they are so adorable. She didn’t require any surgies like my first girl did with eye tacking. Mia still has the attitude and looks mostly like a shar pei. Funny she is more aggressive though than my pure bred shar pei was? She also sheds more than my “Wrinkles” did. I am not so sure about all these new fancy colours. Lavender etc.

My home boy's Meme and Raul had two Chinnese Sharpaes and believe it or not they were very territorial around the house.
