This is the first time I ever got an explanation about Dragon Boat festival.

Good video.I like to eat sweet rice dumplings, especially red dates filling and bean paste filling ones. They would taste better if dipped in honey.😋😋 Every year the 5th of the lunar calendar May is the traditional Chinese festival-"Dragon Boat Festival". The original intention of the Dragon Boat Festival is to drive away the plague gods and sacrifice dragons🐲🐲, so an important activity of the Dragon Boat Festival is dragon boat racing. In addition, the Warring States poet Qu Yuan surrendered himself to the country on the 5th day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar, so there is now a popular saying in China that the Dragon Boat Festival is to commemorate this great patriotic poet.

Thanks so much for this. One of my nephews who is 7 years old, knows that I study Chinese because of my husband. Now, because of this, my nephew is interested in Chinese culture. I was so proud of him, after not seeing him for two months due to Covid-19, when I finally got to see him last week, the first thing he said to me was "早上好 Aunt Lili, 我爱你" For one, I couldn't believe he even remembered how to say "good morning" and "I love you" and two, I couldn't believe he came right in the house and said that to me without hesitation. If I didn't have this channel to supplement and support my learning, my nephew wouldn't pick up on these things. We thoroughly enjoyed this video. Thank you so muck!! I absolutely love anything to do with Chinese culture. Thanks again! ❤

Recently I had a homework about this festival for my English class. Was a powerpoint about cuisine (names,how to prepare the dishes, etc.), traditions, superstitions, the poisonous creatires, Qu Yuan, the names of the festival... I put many pictures. Some key words and mames were accompanied by Chinese character (almost all of them handwriten.) 😁

Tbh wit you guys idk if its just where i am (outside of china) but zongzi to me has always been savoury/salty. For some reason, the ones avalaible here only has groundnuts and glutinous rice, more like a year round snack than the actual zongzi with braised meats, mushroom and rice served specifically on dragon boat fest. I only knew last year zongzi can have red bean stuffing and only now that there are sweet version😅

Thank you for sharing the history behind the Dragon Boat Festival. Although they have them every year here in San Francisco I didn’t know the meaning behind them. Unfortunately this year it was cancelled due to COVID19.

in Thailand, 皮蛋 is called "Khai-yeow-ma" which mean "horse pee egg", i don't know why they called like that, but i like eating it. 咸鸭蛋 is called "khai-kem" which mean "salty egg"

As always, very informative and entertaining, thank you all. I remember reading a beginner short story about the tale behind this festival. It's very curious. As for the food, I tried Zongzi (both salty and sweet), but honestly didn't like them. It's just a ton of sticky rice with a small filling inside

So at 0:32 you say 「你不是说不要吗」, and you pronounced the first four words as ni3 bu2 ruo4. I know it's common for retroflex sounds to become an "r" in fast speech, but is it common to do this with two words in a row like this? I've heard 不知道 as bu4 r dao4, but would bu2 rao4 be possible?
@EverydayChinese4 жыл бұрын
Yes, 不是 (bú shì) sounds like "bú r" in fast speech, but 不知道 (bù zhī dào) sounds like "bù r dào". I rarely hear peopel say "bú rào" in everyday speech. ---Crystal

Question: I learned fúwùyuan to call the waiter. But a Chinese told me they only call a waiter like this in very expensive chique restaurants. She called a female waitress Měinǚ. What's a guy called?
@EverydayChinese4 жыл бұрын
帅哥 [shuài gē] In China, you can address strangers, especially youngsters, 美女 [měinǚ] or 帅哥 [shuài gē] when you need to ask them for help, even when you are in a restaurant.
@EverydayChinese4 жыл бұрын
Yes, we call the waiter “fúwùyuán”, no matter male or female, old or young. For a young female waitress, we call her “měinǚ”, and for a young male waiter, we call him “shuàigē”.
Century egg (Chinese: 皮蛋; pinyin: pídàn) also known as preserved egg, hundred-year egg, thousand-year egg, thousand-year-old egg, millennium egg, skin egg and black egg, are a Chinese preserved food product and delicacy made by preserving duck, chicken or quail eggs in a mixture of clay, ash, salt, quicklime, and rice hulls for several weeks to several months, depending on the method of processing.
