Just wanted to say thank you. This was such an informative 'listening' practice. Your clear pronunciation and use of common vocabulary is also very much appreciated 🙂 PS I am originally from Germany now living in Australia so I can totally relate to not showing too much emotions 😄 Also my Chinese friend here in Australia just came out of her one month after birth stint. It was a new concept for me at first but my friend was guided by the tradition which made her feel safe. Nothing wrong about that.

My girlfriend is Chinese, we met in Abu Dhabi. There are certainly differences in our cultures. Even know I know she loves me, she does ot say it often, where as Americans say it a lot. That has taken me time to get used to. I went to China last year to meet her family, and they gave us there blessings. I was giving red envelopes to her family and friends as the tradition is. Her family, friends and even strangers were extremely nice and hospitable to me. I have even learned to like hot water now! I love China and the Chinese people and look forward to gong back. One of th funniest things was how everyone was amazed that I could used chopsticks so well!

As a western who lived in Taiwan, I love not having to open presents in front of people. I'm not one to get very excited openly, even if I love the gift. So, I feel like I'm on display and have to have a reaction when opening gifts in front of people. I feel the same when giving a gift. I had a Chinese colleague here in Canada who was very kind to me and when she transferred to another unit, I bought her a book of Chinese idioms with the Chinese, pinyin, and English translations. She was our charge nurse and loved idioms and always looking at me to translate, but my Chinese is very limited. Best present exchange ever. Quick, respectful and quiet. I love that we're having these types of interactions where a nurse originally from China is in charge of a hospital unit and explaining idioms to Canadians from many countries around the world. That's a real gift! Your channel is amazing!

Certainly this is not a top 6 - or even a top 10 - cultural difference, but worth mentioning: As a westerner in China, especially in the smaller cities and remote areas, a lot of Chinese (especially a group of two or more) will approach and ask if they can take a picture with you. Here in the US, especially here in the Los Angeles area, people usually won’t do that with strangers, even to celebrities. A teacher I had in Qingdao thought it was rude when people did that to us, but I always had fun with it and none of the picture takers were ever rude. BTW DengDeng and Crystal - Great teaching points in this video, as always. Thank you!

Nice video! I really enjoyed to watch you talking about the differences in culture. Some comments regarding the topics: 2--> I experienced in China that even during the hot summer we would always get hot water. Which was unfortunate, since I was thirsty but the water was too hot to drink! However there was one restaurant serving cold water, which quickly became one of my favorite restaurants to go to. 3 --> This depends a lot on the country. E.g. in Germany you mostly have to pay by cash, but in the Netherlands you mostly pay cashless, using your debit card, which most people have with them since they need to carry their id card with them anyway. You can also use your phone to function like your debit card, but since I have my debit card with me anyway I haven't tried using my phone for it yet.

Thank you again for this excellent resource! It's great how you manage to talk about so many things using only the upper beginner or lower intermediate vocabulary! In Switzerland, mothers get 14 weeks payed leave after birth. In Germany mothers and fathers can take a hiatus of up to 3 years in total (e.g. both take 1.5 years off or one of them 3 years) and get financially compensated by the government during that time.

Another difference is modesty and how we accept compliments. In Chinese culture, the polite thing to do when recieving compliments is to deny them, downplay them, disagree with them, or even to look behind you as though the compliment must be for someone else. That is the best way to show humility. In Western culture, the polite thing to do is to just say “thank you”, because to self-depricate can be seen as fishing for more compliments, so we try to accept the compliment and just move on with the conversation. Very different ways to handle the same situation. Both approaches make sense but could be confusing to people who don’t know how to interpret them. Thank you for these videos- I really enjoy them!
This was very nice. I wish you would have talked about cultural differences when eating loudly (Chines culture) verses quietly (Western Culture). Thank you again for an informative culture diversity video.

Great video! Another difference is the bride price in China. In China it is the groom who has a responsibility to pay for gifts and pay for the wedding, however in western countries it’s traditionally the father of the bride who would pay for the wedding.

This is wonderful! Thank you! After living in Shanghai and Taichung, I tend to drink more warm/hot drinks than cold. Also, there is a big debate here in the US about going cashless. I think a lot of people don’t trust big banks in the US. And every time people pay with a card, small businesses are charged a fee that can add up to thousands and thousands of dollars a month. Here in Philadelphia, many small businesses refuse to take cards because they say since they aren’t part of large companies, they can’t afford all the fees. I pay with my phone at big company stores but try to pay with cash at small family stores. I love getting different perspectives of different cultural norms :)

5:49 - Maternity leave in the United States is regulated by US labor law. The Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 (FMLA) requires 12 weeks of unpaid leave annually for mothers of newborn or newly adopted children. However, there is a lot of nuance to this. Usually, only a rich person could afford to take 12 weeks off work with no pay. Thus, there is a lot left up to companies, which may provide paid maternity leave, or not. In many situations mothers end up not taking much time off due to financial stress. From maternity related website: "Approximately 70% of women report taking time off following pregnancy, with the average maternity leave lasting 10 weeks. Roughly half of new moms take at least five weeks of leave, while 25% take nine weeks or longer to stay home with a new baby." Hope this helps!

Generally speaking what you said is true but there are lots of exceptions to the rule. I respect that Chinese women love white skin but I also think it's a bit unhealthy to avoid the sun at all costs because apparently the sun is our best source of vitamin D.

And skin that has been kissed by the sun look so beautiful and healthy. I lived in China for 5 years, and so many of the women are so white that they look sick! It was also VERY obvious that some of them use skin whitening chemicals on their faces because it doesn’t look natural. Of course I understand that this is their culture. And I respect that but it is something that always looks so strange when I see it.

Usually I prefer to drink fresh or cold water. Many people in France dont trust tap water because they think wrongly it is not safe, but it is very controlled and safe. The only problem is that it has sometimes a light taste and smell of chlorine, but it is put precisely in very little quantity to purify the water, specially in summer. So people are used to buy in stores big bottles of mineral water (1,5 litre or more) and they carry it to their home in their cars with the other food. I remember a friend offered me a glass of lukewarm water, as I was used to drink cool or cold water I said to him "oh it is hot water" and he was a little surprised.
@EverydayChinese4 жыл бұрын
Haha, your firend offered you a glass of lukewarm water is French?
@DenisDenis-bx4bh4 жыл бұрын
@@EverydayChinese yes, perhaps it was not really lukewarm, just temperature of the room (20°) but for me it was too hot, because I usually drink water who stayed in the fridge under 10°(not in winter now in fact), water from the tap is relatively fresh (10-15°).

I love this! Hey wait, I never open my gifts in front of people, I wait until after, I always thought that was more polite. Also, I'm of light complexion and do not like the sun much, I also drink hot water!!! Maybe I was Chinese in another life! Maybe this has something to do with why I married a Chinese man! It's funny because it seems like many of his cultural norms come natural to me in general. As for after childbirth, I find that interesting, here it actually depends on the woman and the birth. Some wait 4 weeks, some wait up to 8 weeks to resume regular activities. Women can wash their hair and shower immediately though. Great video!

In my family's case (we are Nicaraguan), my mom dislike tanned or natural bronze or dark skin color. Talking about presents we don't open gifts after receive them. We open them after the guest left. Regards to showing affection and telling our loved ones how we appreaciate them is like chinelos people. In the case of water, I drink it with "room temperature." Once I drank it hot, I read about it's benefits for health, the problem's that my country has a very hot climate. Oh, "sitting the month"I heard about it. It would be helpful for new moms, in this side of the globe (especially Latin America),this practice doesn't exist. I remember in an escene from Wolverine immortal, the Japanese girl said that. In the case of plates (in my family) are interchangeable, but, not cutlerly and glasses (for hygiene motives)

Eating habits. Westerners eat in own plate and Chinese like to share food using a pair of chopsticks picking food from same plate (hygiene issue). Generally, Chinese are careful not to offend others and show humility, speak less is better but speak wisely and make references to proverbs, hierarchy is important, we use specific title when calling every family member, respect for elders even between friends and colleagues and Chinese in modern lifestyles can integrate well. Example, I’m a Malaysian Chinese Cantonese Christian raised in Catholic school (integrated).
