I own the aforementioned M20 525i though mine's been rebuilt and stroked from a 2.5 to 2.8. Here in Europe the most desirable E34s are the 525i and above because of the wiring that these cars come with. You can pretty much get a bone stock 525i that has 0 extras and tune it to your liking. Throw in a full OBC, electric seats, cruise control etc. The least desirable ones that will likely not go up in value are 518i, 520i and the diesel variants. By the way, the pros of the M20B25 is that it's also easy to work on, though it does need a valve adjustment every once in a while and it's also running a timing belt instead of a timing chain.
@StacheCam5 жыл бұрын

I've owned one of each except for the M5, and I too love the 540i/6. The 530i/5 and the 525i/5 are tied for second...I really don't know which is more fun as they feel similar in power, and the 525i is better on gas, but the v8 sound made me love my 530i. 535i is cool, but, like the m20 525i, they're old school and I'd rather have those engines in an e28. Like an idiot, I'm without an e34 right now, but...another 540i/6 is in the future. The best insight I can give to new owners...if you're happy with how fast it is with your only real aftermarket option being a supercharger, 540i is the way to go. If you want the ability to make a 750hp turbo monster with tons of engine/clutch options, go 525i. Any e34 is a good e34, though. Sub'd!

Thanks for this awesome comparison! This is by far the best video with different E34 engines I've seen. It's great to see there are people who appreciate these great machines! I owe two 535s with manual gearboxes. One of them is my daily with 430k km on the clock, fitted with LPG which makes it as economic as a modern VW Golf. It's very comfy compared to modern cars because of these 15'' BBS and solid suspension - you can do very long trips and not feel tired at all. I managed to fit the AC which is not a standard for this car. In terms of performance it's not as great as it used to be but it's still pulls and it always gets me from point A to B. The other one is about 230k km, it's stays hibernated in the garage and I only take it out for a spin during summer weekends. I owe another E46 330ci individual but if I ever had to sell any of them, the E46 is the first to go.

My friend here in Serbia had 3 e34-s, 520i with 12 valves and 127 horsepower, gray, black 535i that was, from his stories heavily modified in Germany before it came here, it was way different than any other e34 he ever drove or owned, and then he had 520i with 150 horsepower. He is the type of guy who likes changing cars all the time, but still, almost 10 years later he still does not regret selling 535i for some ridiculous money. It had great gas mileage for what it was, it was running like crazy and had the best equipment package you could get. Very good inputs , right to the point ! Thank you for sharing with us all your impressions .... I have been owing a 1992 525i auto - unfortunately - for 7.5 years now. It is my hwy summer car and has now 211,000 km - I am in Canada - , engine runs flawlessly . It's known that M50 and M30 are one of the best BMW engines ever made. I was looking for a manual 525i or 535i but find one in Canada with no rust and/or decent mileage ! Virtually impossible . So 3 years ago I bought a manual 2002 530i with low mileage - 115,000 km - which I am enjoying in the summer as well It should not be too much difference in gas expenses between 525i and 535i. Yes M50 engine is more economical but 91 gas is mandatory while M30 would run fine with 87 octane. So even if 525i would eat 15-20% less gas the difference disappears considering the 20% higher price of 91 vs 87 octane gas. 535i obviously will have more punch - 7.7 sec vs 8.9 sec for 0-100km/hr - vs manual 525i.

A fellow e34 owner. 91' 535i to be exact, true what you say its pretty easy to work on. Ask me how I know, may have over payed at $900 canadian but every time I see it I smile. Love your collection, having an e34 ///M5 is a goal for sure. My 535i is alpine white too, hoping to get 16x8 style 5's like yours soon. Y'all should do a collab video with ButlerHQ. You're both M50 525i and 540i fans it seems so you might get along. Keep up the great e34 content as there's really not much.

@@StacheCam Not a cheap look. The e34's had a "wedge" body style. Dropping the front just little from stock ht. makes a world of difference in the side view. It is not a radical change.

I own a 518i, Europe edition only, and although it's not "that" fast, it still is fast enough for a 1.8L, 1800kg car, plus it doesn't burn that much gas. And, this straight 4 cylinder (m40b18) engine seems immortal ! E34, 30yo classic car, I simply love it and I hope it'll die after me... ✌️ (P. - S. Love your work StacheCam)

Love my 530i. Woulda waited for a 540i but it was 1 owner and couldn’t resist. Been awesome to me, the V8 makes a great sound and *knock on wood* has been pretty reliable. You can pick one up for cheap, too. I will say, though, my average MPG according to the data computer is 19.8, and that’s driving like a maniac.

e34, e32, and e30s are all a lot harder to find in junk yards, at least here in norcal. A few years ago I was about to find a 635 with world series bumpers.. but the time is all gone now, save them while you can. I got a m50 e30, 635csi/5, and a 540i/6. Love them all in their own ways but the 540i is the best to drive imo. The e30 handles amazingly well but I'm 6'6" and enjoy bigger cars.

Don't be scared to daily the M5! She wants to be driven hard, as long as you warm her up. Judging by the smile on your face, I can tell which one you like most... You do NOT need to spend 10k rebuilding the engine every other year... with proper valve adjust every 30k or so, fluid changes and warm up time it will go over 200k easy. Is it a 3.6 or 3.8? One thing you may want to do to your S38 is upgrade the timing chain to E36 M3 timing chain. I did the head gasket on my 3.6, timing chain, clutch and main seal, radiator and steering linkage and it was pricey but not 10k. Came in around 7k, and now my craigslist M5 drives like new (in for about 15k total, and still needs paint...). Only time the car ever let me down was when a gas pump went, consider replacing that if it's over 15 years old. Awesome channel man, thanks for sharing.

He Said, We Sell them, Service them & very rarely Fix anything on them. If it's a Good one, You Should Buy It. It will NOT GO Wrong !! He was 100% Right there. I have bought As many as i can Find at the right price. Any other car i bought would be a BMW e30 Convertible . or Mazda MX5 or New Fiat 124 Spider.
