My birthday was 2 days ago! :D When I was younger, I REALLY didn't like amethyst, or anything purple or pink for that matter. I forever had some floral bedspread in my room where the walls were pepto pink. Being as this was the 80s and early 90s, toys were Barbies, jewelry was "pink ice," and I was just... so sick of it. And I couldn't say anything because my then step-father was a jerk, and would have ridiculed me for it. We eventually moved, so I wouldn't have to have an hour+ long bus ride. The house was new construction, so I, for the first time in my life, had -white- walls. And over time, and then as I got onto the internet and met a friend who loved purple (and am still friends with today), I swung around to enjoying not only my birthstone, but those purples and pinks I used to hate.

Just an fyi. That background was making a bit motion sick do to it's rotating contrast against the dark colors you were wearing. Is it possible to not rotate the screen next time? Amethyst is one of my favorite stones. I had a really good size chunk of it as well I just found but alas, it walked out the door with someone, I'm not sure who.

My birthday is in February and I love the color purple so much that it’s my favorite color. 💜 I did once have some earrings that had purple jewels. And I say jewels because it was probably either plastic or glass made to look like a gem. That’s the closest that I have ever gotten to having amethyst. Maybe someday, my grandma who has been giving me jewelry will give me some amethyst jewelry.

Hey weird question but I was hoping someone could answer for me does the Mohs scale have anything to do with pressure? I own a natural amethyst stone I know it is real as it is still on the host rock. But I can scratch it with a knife, if I just run it across it will not scratch but if a add a bit of pressure it will I can not find anything online about if pressure is a part of it or not.

How to tell if the amethyst is fake or real?

Hi Rhea! The most definitive way to tell is via testing with gemological lab equipment. However, there are two easy ways that can give you a good indication of whether amethyst is real. First thing you should do is find a small piece of glass (like in your cupboard). Touch the glass to the inside of your wrist to feel the temperature. Then, take the stone and touch it to the inside of your wrist. If it’s a natural gemstone, it should feel noticeably colder to the touch than the glass. You could also make an at-home polariscope with a pair of polarized sunglasses and a cell phone. Make your phone screen stark white, put the stone on your screen, and while wearing your sunglasses, rotate the stone. If it blinks dark and light, it indicates it’s doubly refractive and therefore not glass or plastic.
