I think the terms “codominant” and “incomplete dominant” just kind of evolved over the last couple decades to be more accurate. In my college biology classes, we only discussed codominant genes, but never used the term incomplete dominant. But that was over 20 years ago…. 🤷♀️
@ericaledel40652 жыл бұрын
Same for my classes (less than 10 years ago), but we used both terms, codominant was mostly used for discussions of traits that exhibit the "blending" of the two dominant traits so you see both, with incomplete dominance being used more for traits where its more a meeting in the middle, so in humans for blood type we have ABO blood groups with A and B being dominant and O being recessive. A and B are equal, so they are both expressed equally and are codominant. Whereas if the two alleles were on opposite ends of the spectrum, like the Conda morph discussed in the video, where the heterogeneous phenotype is sort of in the middle, a compromise rather than sharing the spotlight, that would be considered incomplete dominance. The pattern allele doesn't fully cover the pattern less allele so it isn't simple dominance like albinism but you can't have codominance because that would mean a snake that's both patternless and patterned. Codominant is definitely the older term though.
@elizabethlowes65012 жыл бұрын
I similarly have done some college bio stuff, and we did do both co and incomplete dominance, and that was 10 years ago, so progress! Or differences in location/curriculum and no real change has happened in what they teach, lol.

So, I found your videos about Rex first and typically avoided the snake videos because I have a serious phobia of snakes. I can’t even watch them on TV. The thing is, I wasn’t always scared of them - the phobia dates back to my brother putting a little garden snake down the back of my shirt when I was 10 or so. Something about that incident flipped a phobia switch or something, and I’ve never been able to get over it. I grew up in Alabama and next to a river, so we had lots of snakes, venomous and not. At some point, from college on, I started avoiding activities where I thought I might see snakes. And if you’re familiar with Alabama, it’s mostly forests and water, so most weekend activities involved camping, hiking and boating when I was a kid and teen. All this to say, I’ve started watching your snake videos to try and desensitize myself to seeing snakes and to try and learn more about them. I’m happy to say that I’ve been doing this for a couple of months and at least I don’t feel sick watching them anymore? It’s getting easier, and I think there’s something about the way Emily is so calm and excited, and how she approaches the videos in an educational manner, that’s helped a lot. I tried watching another channel and had to turn it off, so anyway, I wanted to say thanks for posting this content. It’s still scary for me, but I’m learning a lot. And now, time to watch this video :)

Unfortunately lemon is dominant & lavender is recessive so you just get lemon-looking snakes but that could carry the recessive (het) lavender. If both parents carried lavender as a het then you have the chance to get 50% lemon het lavender 50% lavender.
@Kaeracter2 жыл бұрын
From the available information, and the claims that JMG is who originally created Lemon Ghost (there's and interview on KZbin with him about it), I think it's more complicated than dominant or recessive. It seems that Lemon Ghost is likely a polygenic morph - a morph that shows up as a result of several alleles - like human skin color, eye color, and hair color. There are simple dominant/recessive versions of those traits (brown eyes dominant, blue eyes recessive), but not all people have the same color of blue eyes (gray blue, dark blue, bright blue, etc.) Those variants are polygenic. I suspect that's what happens with Lemon Ghost. It may be dominant, but also highly variable. I think far more documented clutches are needed for the full story :)

I've got a special interest in genetics and when you began discussing the Anaconda morph, I would describe this as gene dosage. It's a type of incomplete dominance. That's how you would end up with an anaconda morph which is heterozygous for the conda gene, but does not display the full conda phenotype seen in patternless snakes. Ex. +/+ is wild type pattern, one "dose" of the conda gene (+/C) results in some larger spots but not many, while homozygote recessives for the superconda gene (C/C) display the full patternless trait. Genetics is so cool! I hope to be a genetic counselor one day :)

I think a super conda and snow morph combination could look cool (if i'm remembering the morphs correctly i think it'd be all white and patternless)

THANK YOU!! Been waiting for some more educational videos about different morphs and snake species. ☺️❤️

Instead of calling it "incomplete dominant" we could call it "incodominant" It flows faster and is similar to the current term so it's more easily adopted. Also my favorite has to be Axanthic, or Wild type tbh.

I've always been a huge fan of axanthic snakes. Something about a grayscale colored snake that is typically brown and yellow etc is so cool.

I just happened across your video as I'm looking to get a hognose, so this video really helped me out on knowing what kind of hognose there are. Thank you so much! ❤

13:50 I've been really trying to figure out what Albino Supercondas' bellies look like as literally nothing ever seems to show them! It's so weird! I couldn't find any pictures online, and they don't even show them here! And they show the Normal Superconda's belly off so clearly too! So frustrating!

Your genetics knowledge is awesome!!! I know Emily went to school for biology but I am so impressed :) (from a current med student/biochemist)

My favorites are either super arctics, or sables… a super arctic sable would be SWEET! Oh! What about a lavender sable? Darken the purple? I want to see a super sable/ a line bred “line” of sables……. I also like albino super condas. But I like the regular Fonda gene a lot too… why do you make us choose!!! There are so many pretty ones, I can’t pick! Lol. We love you guys so much.

I picked up my first hognose yesterday at the reptile super show, I was debating between a snow and an axanthic superconda, I picked up the snow and was curious was genes make it look that way. This vid is awesome and I’m so excited to have this beautiful snake!

Super Conda Snow would be a very interesting baby. Looking forward to seeing if you produce any snows this year as well. Love your videos.

Thank you for the education! 👍 yes let's get the word out. co-dominate vs incomplete dominate makes complete sense to me. the flower examples made it very easy!

Never saw the old snake gentics videos, but all you said made completely sense to me. Okay had a decent share of genetic laws in school and spend some free time in learning about genetis behind Colorvariants of horses
