This video has come at a perfect time - my hognose has decided not to eat recently even though hes been fine all his life! I think its his environment - we realised our thermostat broke not too long ago and had it replaced but since then hes not eaten even though the temp is back to normal. I dont handle too much - hes got a humidity box and a hide. hmmm!
@AloneInTheGarden4 жыл бұрын
Aimiee Thermostats can sometimes vary slightly. It’s possible that even though the new one says the temp is the same as it was before, it may be slightly off. You could try adjusting it a bit and then giving your noodle a few days to adjust.

It's the time of year probably, you can cool him down and not feed if you want or just wait it out. In around 6 weeks he will probably shed, offer a day or two after the shed actually comes off and he will be a hungry hungry hippo. Nothing makes them get back on track like a shed. Plus with the time of year, even if it is hot inside his enclosure he might feel the barometric pressure drop and know it's colder outside. There is an article on reptilinks about how all hogs go off food this time of year and all new owners freak out that goes into more detail.

That's a beautiful fat baby you're holding. :) Getting our first hognose has been an experience this year. He's a nearly three-year-old male we got from a breeding facility that no longer wanted to breed his line. The dummy ended up eating and spitting up his bedding chips (do NOT use Sani-Chips for these guys, they are too small and our derpagus ingested a lot), but thankfully he passed them and wasn't impacted. We put him on much bigger aspen chips to fix that(fibers are good too). 5:35 - Heat is VERY important. We keep our hoggy's tank very warm (around 85-87 degrees, never more than 90 on the substrate surface). Once we got the heat up, 2 months after the substrate incident, he ate. His tank is also in one of the least-used rooms in our house, so it's quiet and comfy. Some hoggies are very fussy. Ours won't eat if you take him out of the tank. He has to be up and moving around of his own volition, and we need to boop his nose with the pinkie before he takes it (like 8:44). Pay careful attention to your hoggy's behavior, limit touch around feeding time, and keep them warm. (Also, talk to your hoggy when they're around to get them used to the friendly noise, and try not to hover over them. The shadow you cast makes them think you're a hawk and it frightens them.) Reptilinks has toad sausages and toad-scenting liquid sprays, if you're looking for those. Those links didn't work for me but others have had a lot of success.

Sydney refused to eat for more than a month. He weighed 10g, but went down to 9g. We went to our vet who force fed him. It was ugly because he really didn’t want to eat. I used all the tips and tricks you mentioned (except chicken hearts, didn’t know that one!), and no eating until the vet. The vet suggested using live pinkies after everyone else in the room went to bed and the lights were out. It worked! I used 2 live, then changed to frozen/thawed. He ate it right down, and we never looked back! That was in early September. He so good on eating, he just ate in blue! Thanks for this video on behalf of all of us anxious snake mom’s out here!

I know it's been 3 years since this video was posted, but I wanted to post up that it was very helpful. I have a male hog nose that's about 1.5 years old and had gone off food for months. once he got too big for pinkies. I tried everything, switching frozen food types, even going back to pinkies. Tried scenting with all the usual recommendations even with frog juice from that expensive web store with no success. He refused to eat. Vet said he was fine so was at the point of selling him to a local vendor when I came across this video and with nothing left to try I went and picked up some fresh chicken hearts and put him in a round tupperware with it. Within 2 minutes he was gobbling it down! I now have a cheap plentiful supply of food that he'll actually eat! Thank you!

From scenting with tuna( worked once) catching roads and using them for scenting (never worked) adjusting temps and almost changing enclosure( he’s in a small tub with aspen) but he’s ok now(ate 4 times since without scenting). Glad you guys made this video though! Very informative especially because when I was having trouble I couldn’t find much info online.

Great tip for cheap hides- use damp sand to make a mold then fill it with concrete or cement, smooth down the edges and you're done. It's cheap and easy to customize. I spent 5 dollars on a huge bag of concrete and 10 on a big bag of sand, had enough for six or so attempts at making the caves, resulted in having three successful caves, because I was experimenting a lot.

I live in New England. 1 albino male western hognose, 2 years old in a 20 Long reptile enclosure. When the colder weather starts to hit, we increase his "cold" side to 82° and the hot spot to 92°. The unheated spaces stay room temp, about 70°. He absolutely refuses to eat in a separate enclosure anymore (suddenly went off feed three months ago and we just got him eating regularly again). We tried everything but the winning combo was turning up the cold side even more, to about 83°, and wiggling slightly (but not too much!) in his upside down hot spot hide.

Living in South Georgia, I had an issue maintaining 30-50% humidity for Plissken, my hoggie, when using a heat mat. He was in a 10-gallon tank with the water on the cool side. On warmer days, the air conditioner removed the humidity but as cooler temps arrived, the humidity was exceeding 60%. I replaced the heat mat with a ceramic heat lamp (still using a thermostat) and that actually created a humidity gradient. I have since upgraded to an Exoterra, but the humidity on the warm section averages 30-35% while the cool section has reached as high as 55% on a humid day.

And of course, my first snake had to be one of these little divas. It took me over a month after I got my hoggie to figure out why he wasn't eating. Now I prep his food almost as if it were in a restaurant. I present it to him on a little plate and everything. He eats it butt first and will refuse it if it's too fuzzy or the tail is too long or if he's just not in the mood. Sometimes I think he refuses it because it doesn't have a parsley garnish. One thing I have noticed about my hog is that he eats the same day that he sheds. I've only had him for two shed cycles, and each time he would gladly accept a meal near the end of the cycle, then shed a few hours later. On his last shed cycle, I tried to wait until he actually shed to feed him, but he didn't shed for three or four days after coming out of blue, whereas before he hadn't gone more than 48 hours between coming out of blue and shedding. So I went ahead and fed him anyway, and he shed that day. Don't know if there's any correlation or not, and if so, whether it's just a personality thing or what. I'll have to see what happens with his next shed.

I tried to see if he’d eat it while in his baby bin but he was over-enthusiastic and kept bluff striking and flipping over. So I put him in the deli he came in with the pinky, covered that up, and it was gone in less than 5 mins! Great timing, our new female hog nose is on day 15 of her hunger strike. We literally fed her at the breeders house before bringing her home so probably the new place stressing her out. However our male (whos three months older) loves having a bonus pinky after he chomps his (he’s in that between pinky and fuzzy size)

This video was very informative! Most of this info can be applied to many other species too :) my baby corn snake is very picky too, and other tips I can give are that maybe if your Snek refuses to eat an item it may be because of the foods temperature. My little baby likes it’s food to be a few degrees above room temperature, he refuses it when it is at room temp. Another thing would be, if you aren’t squeamish, try cutting open the prey items head or torso, snakes seem to really like the scent of their brain or guts and it also helps them digest. Love your vids Emily and keep it up! :)

I just got a Hognose snake that is about 5 months old and we have been successful with senting the pinky with sardine juice. Sadly our last and our first hognose was not successful with his first pinky and tried to regurgitate the pinky and died, but now since I have gotten my new hognose we have been successful with the senting and the eating situation.

I don’t know if you will see this or not but I just wanted to say thank you SO much for making this video. I have been stressing for 5 weeks now being unable to get my hatching hognose to eat since I’ve gotten him. Tried all the tricks, from scenting to making their environment smaller and fuller and nothing ever worked but I watched this and decided to give your chicken heart slices idea a trick and wa la! My baby ate!! I am SO relived and happy and I just had to say thank you as before this video I had never heard of this trick. Thank you thank you thank you.

I've had success with Tuna juice scenting when I first got my Hognose On his more picky days, I've covered his tank with a towel for thirty or so minutes while he's eaten. And yes, he religiously skips meals, gets pickier, and grumpier around his shed. (Although I'd be grumpy too if I was itchy and couldn't see as well)...

Got my first little hog today and he's been so chill. Didn't bother him too much besides doing a quick health check but I haven't seen any signs of stress (even after being shipped literally across the country.) He's explored every inch of his baby bin and made tons of burrows already. So excited for his first feed here!

I know this video is old but it is very useful. My 2 year old corn snake wouldn't eat for about a month, so I watched this and tried covering his feeding bin. He ate very fast afterword and took his second mouse even faster. Thank you so much!

Just the kind of video I was hoping to see. I recently got an anaconda het hypo female hoggers from this year's reptile at the SJ county fairgrounds in Aug. She only ate 5 times between Sep until she stopped at first week of Oct. I tried the cup method, but only worked twice. Last resort I tried a scenting method, but the breeder fears it could change its scenting and wanting what it got. A month later 1st week of Nov I was out of options, so I tried with scenting. Hard egg boiled I used for scenting, and surprisingly she took the scented thawed pinky. I tried again 3 days later, and it worked with no problems. Just to say if anyone asked no I never used anything else for the egg it was just hard boiled with no oils or anything. Just boiled in water. Also only once I fed her just one small piece of the egg too. I like to thank you for confirming that fact. Despite the low nutrient of the egg it is to them, but can they only eat egg once in a long while?
