Excellent and informative video! :) I find it so interesting that in the UK neutering refers to fixing both males and females. Over here fixing a female is referred to as spaying. Your little cutie is just too adorable! I hope her and Ollie make the perfect piggy pair!
@BeckysAnimals
@BeckysAnimals 10 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much BB :) I think a lot of people here refer to the female procedure as spaying too, spaying is removing the ovaries whereas neutering isn't gender specific because it just means removing parts of the reproductive system to leave them sterile. The vets I go to use the word neuter for both boys and girls so I normally use neuter to make it easier on the phone to the receptionists but some people use neutering for boys and spaying for girls here too :) I hope you and all the fuzz balls have settled into your new home well :) I'm sure little one and Ollie will be great together once I can shift these lice xx

*Help* A friend is giving me 2 year old piggy because they can't take care of him anymore, and I have a girl (she is a year old) and I will be getting another female, about a year and a half old from my aunt. I don't want him to be in his own cage alone, but I don't want my current piggy to have babies, nor my aunts piggy. I feel like it isn't my place to take his ability to reproduce but also not my place to breed them and then have to give the babies away to potential people who won't care about them and there are too many animals who need homes already.. I don't know what to do. I guess I should wait to see how he does, all three piggies appear to have similar personalities I am just worried.. PS your piggy has such a beautiful coat

Awww that happens all too often, pet shops overall seem pretty poor at this! (Of course not all pet shops are bad) It will depend on the vet as to the exact age they will neuter piggies, not all vets will so it would be worth ringing around your local vets. You might want to check when you have to separate the baby boys and girls too, once they reach sexual maturity you could end up with a lot more babies! Good luck x

If they don't get on how would I keep them together. I have 2 boars 3 months old on 12/11/18 Dean is bullying Sam all the time I bought them together. My vet said they both need neutering but if they don't get on now will they not get on ever? Need advice love my boys
@BeckysAnimals
@BeckysAnimals 5 жыл бұрын
Neutering is unlikely to help as it doesn't tend to change their behaviour. Could you give them more space to get away from each other, extra water bottles, food bowls and hides so they don't have to compete or share and can easily get a break from each other? I have found this has helped in the past with two boars. They are also at the age when they will be reaching sexual maturity so may be re-establishing their dominance. You may find that it starts to settle down with time. Just make sure they are both safe and able to eat and drink. If it persists and one is not able to eat or drink or if they are fighting badly, you may need to seperate them. Maybe have a look into normal dominance behaviours to help you decide: www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/threads/dominance-behaviours-in-guinea-pigs.28949/

@@BeckysAnimals could it be because they have a small cage. www.petsathome.com/shop/en/pets/maple-manor-hutch-for-rabbits-and-guinea-pigs I'm getting them this one. Hopefully they will be okay. Thank you.
@BeckysAnimals
@BeckysAnimals 5 жыл бұрын
Yes it could be. If they are in a small cage, they don't have the same opportunity to get away from each other and have their own space so they can get on each others nerves. For two guinea pigs you want a minimum of 76 x 127cm but bigger is always better when you can, especially for boys who tend to be more dominant and territorial than girls. That hutch looks like a good size for two piggies. Make sure you have at least a house each but ideally three so they have options. A water bottle and food bowl at each end should help too and stop some of the bullying behaviour so whichever end they are, they can get food and water, at least until the behaviours settle down. I hope it helps, my boys used to go through phases like this, it usually works out but keep a close eye on them for signs of fighting just in case :) Maybe I should do a video on the topic.

@BeckysAnimals
@BeckysAnimals 6 жыл бұрын
Are they definitely boy and girl? Sometimes guinea pigs mount as a sign of dominance, not because they are mating but if you have a boy and a girl and neither are fixed, they will most likely have babies. It can happen very quickly too, she may already be pregnant. The vet can check her out and advise you on what to do x

TheSmallPetShop well I adopted the girl along with her sister we were told they were both girls and unfortunately her sister had died and one day I went into the local store (that does adoptions) and I saw my new one I was told it was a girl but I recently went and got him checked and for sure it is a boy so yes I have a boy and girl but she is not pregnant and have been together for about 8-9 months and he chases her time to time for about a hour but she doesn't allow him and I split them up when it gets too much (it's only happened 4 or 5 times sense I've got him) but I am getting him neutered next month hopefully

I have a female who will be 2 in November and I'd like to get her a friend (although she seems happy alone) but I want them to be close in age and there aren't many females to adopt in my area who aren't little babies and we have no shelters. I'm thinking of getting a male off craigslist and getting him neutered, but should I try and bond with him first? Or would it be easier to just get him fixed and bond after before he gets out in? I don't want to put the little guy in shock from so much change.
@BeckysAnimals
@BeckysAnimals 10 жыл бұрын
It would be great to get her a friend, there are a huge number of benefits to paired piggies. It would be best to let him settle in for a bit first maybe so he doesn't get too freaked out. Then you will also get to know what he is like, after surgery you need to keep an eye out for any behavioural changes so you know if he is recovering okay, it will be easier if you know his personality :)

@unicornlpstube8472

Yes, if a male is neutered, then it no longer has sperm to transfer through a female. If you just neuter the male, it is perfect because even if he does try to mate, there are no sperm cells to create babies.

I know this is dominance but is there some way I can fix it? I'm soon going to expand their cage by a lot, will this help? Thanks

A bigger cage will definitely help, is there enough houses and two of everything in their cage? That will help to prevent that behaviour as there won't be anything to fight over. It is a normal dominance behaviour though so you will always see it sometimes :)

For females is it called neutering for the entire UK or is it just your area? I love learning about different countries:) hope Ollie heals well! Also you said he was being bonded with Silver and Pearl in the video but I thought he was being bonded with your new piggy? Or are they all being bonded as one whole herd?
@BeckysAnimals
@BeckysAnimals 10 жыл бұрын
It can be called neutering for females anywhere, neutering just means the surgical removal of parts of the reproductive system so applies to both. Spaying is used only for females because it means removing the ovaries. Luckily he healed really well and the vets have given him the all clear :) When I got him done, the plan was so he could live with S and P. Since then we brought the new one home and the priority now is to get the new one and Ollie together so everyone would be with a friend. I will see how the dynamics are between all the pigs but I would love a herd with Ollie, Silver, Pearl and the new one (Lilly) :)

My friend has a girl and she is probably 2-4 years old. Tonight my piggy (his name is Sammy) did not let me sleep. I think that he longed Merru (Merru is my friend´s piggy name). I called her today and we agreed that they could spend some time together. How old is Ollie when he went for the operation? He looks pretty small! Thank you! :)

He will be 2 years old in September. Ollie was the one at the beginning of the video, not the blonde one. He looks small because of his build but he's the heaviest of my boars :)

How long do i have to keep them separated after the malw desexed?
@BeckysAnimals
@BeckysAnimals 5 жыл бұрын
The time recommended varies depending on which source you read so I leave them separated for 8 weeks to be on the safe side to make sure all the sperm have died off :)

I know I’m like 7 years late. But I’ve been wanting piggies for a long time, I’ve done trucks load of research and I have recently set up a 3x3 c&c cage with a 1x2 loft. I know male pigs often need more space than females, so I was thinking of getting 2 girls, but then I heard about the benefits of having a neutered boy and a girl as a pair. So now I don’t know what would be best. A girl pair or a boy and a girl pair. So you think the surgery is too much of a hassle if I could just get 2 girls? Or should I go the long way and get a boy and have him for a while, then neuter him, then wait for him to be infertile, and then get him a girl mate. I’m willing to go the long run. But idk if it’s worth it if I could just get 2 girls. Your opinion would be awesome!

I have 2 males I wanna get fixed so they can be with my 2 females. Is it a bad thing or no?
@BeckysAnimals
@BeckysAnimals 3 жыл бұрын
I have never kept 2 males with females before but it is quite likely the males will fight over the females so it may be safer to keep them in pairs.
@xc8487

Neutering doesn't change male behavior, 2 males will absolutely fight each other if there's girls in the cage and may even harass the girls. It's best to just keep them in separate same sex pairs.

Should they be housed inside if they are outside guinea pigs for the few days /week after his surgery?
@BeckysAnimals
@BeckysAnimals 9 жыл бұрын
I personally would so I could keep an eye on them and check that they are recovering okay, however they are sensitive to sudden temperature change so I wouldn't bring them straight in after them being outside in the winter. Maybe have a room that is at an in-between temperature to give them chance to adjust :) If he already lives with any cage mates, I would bring them in too so he isn't lonely, also it means you won't have to reintroduce them later on.

It's up to you, have a long think about it and weigh up the risks vs the rewards. Maybe talk to your vet too and see how confident they are about performing the operation on him x

how do you know if its a boar?
@BeckysAnimals
@BeckysAnimals 9 жыл бұрын
Natasa Milosevic A boar is a male guinea pig. Probably the most obvious outward sign is if they have testicles. There is an article on sexing here: www.cavyspirit.com/sexing.htm but if you can't tell, take them to your local vet or animal rescue and they will be able to tell you.

Petco sold us a 5 dollar guinea pig and told us it was a boy , and we put him with our other guinea who is a male and well a month later found out it wasn’t a male it was a Female and she gave birth to 2 baby’s. So petco sold us a female without us knowing :/.

I just came to brag about my dudes. Theyre the only real men i love 😁. Theyve gotten bigger, so, i feel like theyre my young men. I raised dem babies 😍🤗. I still catch them doing their popcorns & zoomies. But just occasionally. They used to do their "morning jogs" like clock work, but not anymore 😭... I had to separate them for a bit bc theyre being mean to each other. But sometimes i see them tolerating each other. Even being cute. Im not sure what theyre doing, but it looks like theyre "kissing" each other. Or smelling/grooming me/food on each other 😅? Idk. They dont sleep beside each other anymore. But sometimes i catch them sleeping near each other. But w/ a bit of the manly distance 💪... Or to the closest corner, near me. 😍 Theyre sleeping close to each other by the barrier i put up now tho., bc they miss each other. Little dudes cant ever figure out how they want to act. 🤣 At least they can be colorful w/each other tho 😁...
