Being on Ellen's show is a chance to educate thousands of people that guinea pigs, (and rabbits, hamsters, mice, rats, hedgehogs) can't all be treated the same, given the same cages, foods, etc. Small animals need healthy environments, proper nutrition and enrichment - being an educated pet owner is a must!! No more sticking a lone guinea pig into a tiny cage and shoving it into the dark corner of a kids room where it will occasionally be fed as it withers away from its unhealthy environment. Petition signed and shared!

Perfect timing! Thanks for the video Saskia! We got our third female yesterday and it has been a bit rocky. We got a 4 weeks old female for our pair of females (one is 1 yearvold and the other one is 6 months old). Our oldest is super mellow so she couldn't care less about what is going on, but the 6 months old...super bossy! She can't get her way with the oldest, but boy she sure is taking it on the baby. The first day she was chasing her and nipping quite frequently. It is getting better now, but she is still doing it (just not getting out of her way to push the baby around). I feel the oldest intervenes sometimes, kind of telling her to knock it off. Just like you said, at the rescue they were behaving just fine. As soon as we got home, she started. It will work out 😊. Love bonding videos!

Hey Saskia, I commented on your bonding males video about this one and I just need a little help. I'm a first time guinea pig owner I've owned my pigs afew months I got one of them from a family who couldn't take care of her anymore but she never had a cage mate and she was about a year or so old and the other I got from a lady who didn't have the time to care for her pigs. From the lady who had the pigs I took two piggies home and they were bonded. I tried to put my other pig I got from the family with them a few times and it always ended in someone fighting I didn't really understand why I always had a huge open area with hay and food but they still fought. Now my pig that I got from the lady one of the pigs passed away due to age and now I have two and they live separate both in Midwest cages by themselves. Now I've been trying about every weekend for about 40minutes to bond them but they always fight. Could it be because there both too dominant or because the one never had a cage mate. I just want to get them into one cage and getting along happy. Thank you -Alissa (plz help Saskia ❤❤)
@Audrey-hb9nn5 жыл бұрын
Alissa King I’ve heard that separating the pigs when the fight can be very stressful for the pigs and when you separate them and put them together again they don’t pick up where they left off but instead start over again. I would suggest letting them sort out their differences for probably three hours (once they seem to be fine with each other leave them in the open area Incase they fight again). Once they seem ok with each other it’s probably best to stay in the room but you can be doing something else. Only fully remove the piggies from each other if there is blood and scratches on the face are normal. I true piggie fight will look like just one blob of fur. Separate them with a towel/blanket if it comes to this or if you see blood. If it does come to this your pigs probably cannot be bonded. (This is all stuff I’ve heard so you might want to fact check it but I do have 3 pigs so I know that at least most of this is true)

I’m fostering for Metropolitan GP rescue. I think Maryland requires all the pigs to be fixed. I’ll have to talk to manager, Becky to confirm. Saska, you would love her. I have 2 fixed boys and one fixed girl. And one who has birth control implant for polycystic ovary disease equivalent because I am GP neurotic. I believe Boy/girl are generally the easiest bondings. I understand why people don’t want to take the risk to get pigs fixed and it’s awesome that you can match boys. MPGR rarely loses GPs. I think the loss rate is on the order of dog/ cats, but I could be wrong so I’ll need to find out. Anyway lovely bonding as always.

Hi! What is the process for introducing a neutered Male to 2 girls? The girls and boy are in separate cages at the moment, when I've put the cages near each other there's a lot of teeth chattering! Should I introduce them all at once? I don't really have an option to give the new boy up, other than back to the rescue. Thanks!

I have four female piggies. 2 I bought together from the same litter - they get on swimmingly but then I brought home a new female piggy and introduced. It was fine at first but a month down the line and ever since Luna (my aggressive piggy) has bullied Bella. (My timid scared baby) she stops her from eating and drinking and always chases her and bites her chin. I have a new piggy, she hasn’t been introduced yet BUT I’m thinking of just pairing her with Bella and keeping newbie and Bella separate from aggressive Luna. Luna gets on really well with her sister, Ginny.

Can I ask a question? :) I have 3 boars living together, unfortunately one of them (the younger pig) got a bit older. I'm guessing a hormonal storm inside and got dominant. From the least dominant pig he won quite fast, but the boss pig and him got into fights.. First it wasn't too bad so I tried keeping them together in hopes it would go away again. But since today I separated them because one of them got a wound. I know reintroducing will not be smart, but now I'd like to get the young one fixed and add a female to buddy up with him. Is this smart? Will the bonded pair be okay if they smell the younger boar and the female pig in the same room? Or is this a bad idea? Advice would be much appreciated! I'm afraid if I get another boar, maybe the same will happen, and I don't have space for 3 cages.. (2 is already more than we wanted but better than saying goodbye to any of my piggies)

I was boarding two female skinny pigs for a few months that had previously been bonded. The owners said that got along great. But at my house they bickered nonstop. I moved them to a larger cage and the bickering only got worse. They never drew blood and since they weren't my pigs I really didn't want to separate them. There was no blood or scratches but the one the was getting picked on would cry and run away every time the aggressor approached her. I felt so bad for her. Then she scratched her eye on some hay probably trying to run away from her sister. I put a divider in the cage so they would still be able to see each other. But I wanted to give the little one a break while I treated her eye and give her a chance to heal. When she was better I took away the divider and the bickering pretty much stopped. I really don't understand girls and their drama. Hahaha... Boys, on the other hand, I have tons of experience with.

Hello fellow guinea pig lovers, I have a question. I am adopting a male guinea pig and the rescue says they have tried 5 males and 2 spayed females but all have failed. Many in the guinea pig community get quite upset when seeing a single guinea pig. Thank you all❤️🐹
@LosAngelesGuineaPigRescue5 жыл бұрын
Well first of all "bashing" sounds very negative and I like to stay away from that. Only kindness and loving "education" will make a real difference because people don't shut down but actually open up and are willing to listen. When we have a male that is a bit of a trouble maker as we call them, and he does not get along with pigs he has been introduced to we pair him with a baby. From 3 weeks to 2 / 2.5 months would be ideal. I wrote this article a while back. It may be useful Bromancing ( or male guinea pig introductions) By Saskia Chiesa, Director Los Angeles Guinea Pig Rescue I just got an email asking for tips to a successful boar introduction. Since this is a topic that comes up all the time I decided to write a detailed answer and share it with you all on Facebook. I have no magic tips. This is a mixture of hormones, personality and how those energies work together. That is what determines the outcome. Online there is a lot of talk about neutral space (guinea pigs are not territorial) and clean cages (only matters if the cage housed females right before) but to be honest I don’t think any of that matters. They either get along or they do not, there is no influencing that. What does help is make sure they have a large space for the intro. If they are cooped up in a small intro space they are likely to become irritated with each other and with certain personalities too small a space will likely make them fail to get along. If a male is Alpha and has a high sex drive (usually the males under 1.5yrs - lots of purring and humping) then you want to try and make a match with a male that is the opposite. The opposite would be what I call “Buddha Pigs” and are the ideal companion for any boy. They do not get bothered by a lot. They don’t take offense when the other pig sniffs, humps and rumbles and chatters away. And doesn’t feel the need to do any of those things himself. He remains Zen in the face of an annoying and relentless humper. Those two would be the exact opposite of each other and of course there are a lot of degrees of behavior in between. It is not a science and I make my decision whether or not the boys may or may not be a match by feeling their “vibe” together when we do the intro. We can usually tell in the first 5 minutes if a match is likely to work out, however, every now and then happen boys may appear to be a match but will decide a week later that they are not going to get along after all. Babies (between 3 weeks and 2.5 months) are almost always a match. But when that baby becomes a teen and the hormones start raging they may take issue with each other. Although humpy teens usually get better after 1.5yrs old. So if there is no fighting but the teen is just annoying the other with humpy behavior then it may be worth sitting it out. Lastly if they don’t get along but you love both pigs and don’t want to give up either of them the next best thing is to have them living “apart together”. This can be achieved by dividing the cage so that they can touch noses, smell and see each other. You will even see them snuggling and sleeping right next to each other with the divider in the middle. They just cannot be together. The minute you remove the divider they will act like this is the 1st time they have seen each other and go right back to where they were they left off before the divider was put in. There are exceptions of course but usually this is how they respond. When going for this option make sure that the individual space for each guinea pig is large enough. Single pigs need about as much space as pairs. 2 x 3ft would be the minimum recommendation. Coroplast made cages would work really well for this purpose. Good luck with the Bromancing!!Saskia ChiesaDirector LA Guinea Pig Rescue

Sadly there are no magic tips to be had. There are lots of ideas out there including the buddy bath etc and those sadly just don't really work. Check if the aggressive female has crusty nipples, this usually indicates an issue with the reproductive system like cysts or sometimes worst. spay will take care of that and the aggressive behavior will disappear .

@@LosAngelesGuineaPigRescue I checked, I don't see or feel any crustyness. I have been considering spaying for a while now. Thankyou so much for your feedback, you have been supper helpful with the information you give out 😊

I have two females that had a bit of trouble bonding with each other but have zero issues with my Male (not fixed). He would actually get between them to stop the struts. It's super cute tho, they do cuddle with him. I have not seen humping but if I get piggies I am ready to take full responsibility and I have an entire area already reserved for the 4 I already have. The 4th one is a Male and he refuses to bond with anyone, he is still close to the others just doesnt like sharing space
