Wow, what wont they think of next ... I never would have guessed until watching this video that there were LEDs inside some ICs. I knew ICs were tiny transistors, resistors, capacitors, etc bundled together, and that diodes were in there too ... many of these parts being possible due to the magic of PN .... but I never would have guessed there was an IC with and *internal* LED that triggers an internal transistor. Very cool. And genius. I guess this has some very cool applications. Paul, thanks for sharing, you are a true treasure 🙏

Lots of youtubers seem to do that as if they are getting info on what is "TRENDING" right now. I don't mind it at all and it helps get different views and ideas based around one single subject.

@@TheTubejunky I could see that for some youtubers. But the video I referenced by IMSAI Guy was posted over a year ago. I just happened to watch it yesterday. Paul is always on the same wavelength as I. Happens all the time. I’m working on some sort of project and Paul post videos on the DataSheets I read the day before. So maybe latency is just a little off. 😂 Great stuff friend.

These things are game changers when it comes to automation! The fact that you can switch higher voltage loads with only 3-5 vdc is a good tool in the bag of electronics. You could also design a circuit that turns on for a given time with a RC (peak detector) to keep something on for a given amount of time. Basically ANYTHING that outputs 3-5 volts DC . (per opto datasheet specs)

There is a current ratio as well that if used properly can be used to transfer low level ac across the chip

I used one recently as a vactrol in a Eurorack module I'm designing. Worked like a charm for adding some voltage control where a resistor would otherwise be 🙂 As for turning it into an oscillator: I need to try it out but I'm thinking a PNP transistor with the PNP base connected to the PC817 emitter in parallel with a capacitor to ground, the idea being the PNP would close once the capacitor is full, which would cause the 817 to emit less current which would cause the PNP to open and so forth.

I have to ask.. Does anyone else have soooo many electronics parts (like resistors, caps, xfrmers, IC's to micro controllers ect..) that you forget what you do have laying around? Then to only buy more of what you already have somewhere in the lost totes of bounty?! Tote upon tote of projects and parts gets overwhelming fast. The the whole debacle of rummaging through things to find a few distinct parts you eventually get caught into an entirely new project and the process repeats! It's fun to be a hobbyist! searching through parts is exciting like a kid looking through an old toy box! Have a great day everyone!

Had this issue dating back to 2004. I had been keeping an Excel spreadsheet for all my credit card transactions, but could never remember if I had something I watched on youtube. Then when I had covid back in '19 and lots of time on my hands, I copied the spreadsheet and eliminated everything but electronic parts. 103 pages later, I have a full inventory, complete with price, date of purchase, order number and where it was purchased. I was in shock to discover that my blushing bride was correct in her accusations that I was spending way too much on my "hobby".

Cool little buggers. Have these for a project as a "relay" for motorcycle 12v turn signal signal across to an Arduino controlling a ws2812b LED strip as the turn indicator

Oscillator just needs a negative feedback loop. I believe a resistor and a capacitor is all you need.

2: 06 The power is NOT going into one side and coming out the other. Both sides are powered separately. In simple terms, it is only sending a signal from one side to the other. Edit: At 13:16 I see you corrected this. So I guess you just didn't notice your error when editing this video.

@@englishrupe01 That's no reason to not post your own videos. We all make mistakes. If mistakes are not pointed out, then those learning from these videos, come away with wrong assumptions. At first I was very surprised at what he said because I know he knows better. Then later he stated the situation correctly. So it was something that slipped by him in editing. He might correct this, or he might just let it go. That's up to him. But if you have something to share in a video, then please do it. Don't worry if someone points out an error. That's how you get better at what you're doing. We learn from our mistakes. God knows I've made many myself. Constructive criticism is not a bad thing.

Yes, it's possible. You need to put 20 mA through it at 1.2 volts. That tells you everything you need to know to calculate resistor value. I'll leave the Ohm's Law exercise to you.

optocouplers are not about electrical isolation. its about junk not doing as its told. you got a 555 timer and its rigged to be astable. its supposed to tell the bjt to shut off so you got inverted output vs the original signal and a little resistor to prevent it from stealing all the current so you can have both. but some how it never acts as a not gate. a small signal mosfet put in a duplicate circuit also will not do as its told even when the test led is removed leaving only the alternate route it refuses. like it wants to end up in the box of shame which is annually discarded with human wasted in a double bagged arrangement. but then some 4 legged upstart says he can do it just give him a chance and the damn thing does the thing and you can run 2 mosfets to drive a transformer with a regulated circuit
