I had a trio of pepper corys in my first ever community tank. We had a freak blizzard in October which took out the whole state's power for over a week. The water temperature dropped about 25⁰F overnight & all of my other fish died within a day or two. However, my pepper corys survived about 10 days & lived happily for years after. I have them in my current tank & will probably always have some in at least one of mine. My absolute favorite fish.

They may experience these temperature lows in their natural environment? A well known youtuber went to a place where we source ‘tropical’ fish and was surprised how cool the water was at dawn. Or peppers maybe come from nearer the mountains or Southern parts of the Amazon? I think I heard they are from Argentina.
@giftofthewild66658 ай бұрын
They are subtropical fish and can survive temperatures down to 10C apparently.

These fish are troopers, when I moved states they lived in a 10 gallon bucket with a sponge filter for the duration of the trip and a few weeks after while I waited for my stuff to arrive. I didnt lose a single pepper.

The only way to prove that your comment is anything but a true statement is a fool's errand and the fact that you felt it was worth the mention ...has to be respected , but I believe that it would be easy to refute and the way to get everything wrapped up is to say that any of the Cory's ( GOOGLE most popular Cory catfish ) is underrated is the most overused adjective that is used by someone who has no clue! Could this be 🧒????

Lovely vid. When I decided I wanted an aquarium in August this year I stumbled upon this channel and found it very helpful, I bought a 160 litre tank and have it set up as cold water with plenty of plastic plants and hideouts. I initially put mountain minnows and zebra danio in the aquarium and a month later I put 6 peppered Corey and 9 armano shrimp in and they're all loving life and the glass always has eggs stuck to it so I guess they must be feeling comfortable. Any who🤪, thanks for all the help in understanding how to look after fish, they're great to watch. 👍❤️🇬🇧

These were the first corys I bought when I started keeping tropical fish many years ago. And yes, they are delightful. I have since then kept many species and lately I have bred C. similis. However, I would advise caution about keeping these corys at low temperatures. I recently lost all 14 of my breeding adults when the heater/stat failed and the temperature in the tank fell to 16˚C. I know a few species are found in cool streams and some tolerate low temperatures, a friend of mine kept S. barbatus in cold running tap water for years, but not all can live at constant low temperatures, so please be careful. 18˚C or below for extended periods is stressful. The sudden downpours experienced in the tropics are quickly dissipated in the streams and rivers by solar radiation, so the fishes don't endure lingering cold spells. White clouds are temperate species and withstand moderate winter conditions, whilst zebra danios prefer warm water - I kept them in outside ponds in London but they never survived the winters.

@@majorbruster5916 great comment thank you 👃, ironically I bought a heater today as I lost two danio this week on different days and the water parameters are good apart from temperature, after a couple hrs of the heater being in all the fish look much happier. 😁👍

@@majorbruster5916 I have a room temperature tank with rosy barbs and panda garras, are there any cories that can live at around 18 - 26C? I'd like a catfish or few in the tank but not sure which species to go for that can live at the lower temperatures.

One of my favourite cory, as ever your videos are fab, informative and entertaining to watch and listen to 👍🙂👍 I make my own pellets now for bottom feeders, could I send you some to try? No charge at all I would just like you opinion and a little feed back. I started making them for neo caridena shrimp and mystery snails then soon realised that grey are enjoyed but the bottom feeders and most other fish like nibbling them also. Let me know if you'd like to try some 👍👍

Do these corys have a barb and release a toxin under extreme stress? This is currently a myth I’m trying to bust and is what’s stopping me from considering keeping them.

I need help, my peppered Cory was floating at the top of the fish tank still alive today, even though it was fine around 7-8 hours previously, I have ordered swim bladder treatment and aquarium salt, he/she is in a tank with a beta fish so I’m wondering if that’s related? I have spotted my beta fish chasing my peppered corydora. (I have had the peppered Cory for around 24ish hours) Thank for reading! 💓🫶🏼

@giftofthewild66658 ай бұрын
Every fish that can fit them in their months will eat guppy fry. Cories don't typically hunt down fry though so if there's enough hiding spots near the top of the tank they probably won't find the fry.

they do not do that well in warmer temps... anything above 27C usually stresses them... continuous exposure to this range will seriously shorten their lifespans.

I want to get some for my unheated tank. I live in the subtropics and the tank temp doesnt go below 19C even in the dead of winter, however it hits 29 -30C in summer and stays there for about 2-3 months. Will that be too hot for them?

@@giftofthewild6665 I am going through that phase now, where I live the temp outside is in the upper 30s (C). I have a chiller, but it is set at 28...as if I set it lower it hardly gets any rest - the water warms up too fast. I have 4 pepper corys for almost a year now, they are hanging on.
