I think you would really enjoy a 3d printer. It might be a little time consuming to design things if you're not used to it, but I imagine you printing out a ton of little clips and guides and tube extensions and fun shapes to help with your instrument creations. Spacers, guides, mouthpieces, brackets, etc!

Bravo Monsieur Bras.

I love those kinds of two-tone playing with wind instruments! Alas when I was being classically-taught I figured it out and was immediately told “stop that racket, make a pure tone!” so it wasn’t until _literally last year_ I learned it was an accepted technique in jazz etc. I already liked the jazz world much better than classical, in how it still encourages improvisation rather than being told to memorise certain passages to “improvise” with… but every time I learn something else I was forbidden from is popular in jazz I love it even more 😂
@zayoBIM2 ай бұрын
@@kaitlyn__L it's funny how orthodoxy signs its own death warrant like that. It also always seems like the self taught musicians who play more by intuition tend to innovate more than those brought up on strict theory. There's magic in the naive, no?

As a decades-long fan of Jethro Tull, this was SO eye-opening! I had never heard, or heard _about_ about Fulani, which, now hearing it, so clearly influenced his unusual style. Now I have a new rabbit hole to explore! As always, a pleasure, Nicolas- Thank you!

@@alicetwain and where did jazz pick it up from… cmon (On that topic though, gosh I wish I’d been taught jazz woodwind instead of classical. When I’d figured out how to make power chords in my playing with this method, they told me to “stop that racket and make a pure tone” ugh)
@alicetwain2 ай бұрын
@@kaitlyn__L well, in the case of Eric Dolphy he also picked it up from classic flute playing. He studied with Severino Gazzelloni. The genesis of jazz is a complex one that mixes African and western influences.

@@alicetwain lol, I deleted exactly your last sentence when paring down my first paragraph :p I’m sure it comes up in some classical playing but most teachers were not receptive! At least at the levels I studied woodwind in ensembles, before not knowing piano prevented me from taking the advanced music programme.

Outstanding! It was good to hear the story of how Dramane came to play a flute that was from a different country to the one he's from. It was wonderful seeing how creative Nicolas can be with his flute building - it clearly impressed Dramane too! The music you both made together was superb. I'm grateful for the subtitles too. Just a fantastic video. Thank you both very much!

So interesting... But it's certainly not only the flute's shape or the way of producing the sound that makes it characteristic of that region? Now that you got me curious I wonder what scales they use? Is it a lead or accompanying instrument? What are the other instruments they play with in a village? On what occasions? What do you say, how do you compare such instruments to western classical; differences and similarities... what problems and challenges they present... Three holes he mentions... Does it mean he's limited to a... pentatonic scale? Or which one? Cause he says he doesn't have a chromatic scale! I'd really like to hear what you'd have to say!

Ziliyn
