I think it was the interview you did in Japan some years ago that got me started. I typically give my nets as gifts to fishing friends I make when I move.

Thank you for the great episode. I have a feeling I’ll be looking at trees in a whole different way while out hiking from now on. Looking forward to hearing more about the new net.

Daniel love this, lots of great information and inspirational. I want to make my own net now. I have several pines on my patch of land and will start looking for the best branch. Looking forward to the new net.

Great video. I am a woodcarver and appreciate the wood look. Cyanoacrylate is super glue and is a structural adhesive but a rigid adhesive that does not absorb shock or impact well so you have to be careful with impact

Thanks for that info on the super glue, great point about the rigidity of it!

They typically recommend you prune your trees in the fall/winter because the wounded part of the tree lets insects get in easier. I'm sure its the same for wild trees. Thanks for the video, very informative.

Daniel, a folding saw would probably serve you well in the field for gathering branches. Look for saws made by Silky, Bahco, Opinel or Corona. Also, if you want to go super lightweight and since you're only cutting thin branches, the saw on one of the larger swiss army knives may be enough for the purpose.

I ended up building a small collection of saws, including a couple of folding one, and one that was essentially a thin wire saw. They are very good on outings where I am not focused on cutting branches (going fishing, but may possibly run into a branch). But, for outings dedicated to looking for a branch, I eventually settled with the one in the video, in a sheath, as the cutting is super quick and effortless.

sounds like your company needs a full time net maker/crafter to make you guys nets? thank you for the tips,, your nets are pieces of art as any thing made by hand is

So informative.. well done, loved the video Daniel. I have to get a classic Tenkara net, much better than a regular net in form and functionality. More content like this is so welcomed. Kudos to you.

I am finishing my 1st frame - used dogwood. I also am working on one from grapevine. Your video is an inspiration!!!! One question - where do you get your bags?
@dymancurtis3 жыл бұрын
Yes where can we find the mesh bags?

Concerning the splice, If you were to put the hoop flat on the ground, would the splice be cut vertically or horizontally?
@tenkarausa3 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the delayed response. The splice is diagonal but with the hoop on the ground it would be mostly horizontal

Thanks for that suggestion! I'm surprised I haven't done a full episode about it. But, we have one good podcast episode that cover some Colorado fishing: www.tenkarausa.com/myportfolio/chasing-colorados-native-trout-with-mark-cole/

Do you plan to make available few nets for sale?

We are working on a new net design for this Summer, we also have some mesh bags on our website for people interested in making their own. I personally don't sell my nets at the moment. Thanks - Daniel

How about a willow tree.

It's possible, haven't looked super carefully at them, my main concern is usually finding the right branch shape (a + shaped branch, rather than a y-shaped branch). I'll look at some that I know near me to learn more. Other thing could be the increased flexibility of the branches, maybe too flexible? I don't know. But, I think every tree has potential, and could bring something unique to the table.
