The ACE2 enzyme is the receptor for the SARS-CoV-2 virus, and is found in the cells of our noses, mouth, lungs, and in many other organs. ThePrint’s Sandhya Ramesh explains why this receptor exists and drugs are being developed around it.

Being myself a research scholar in Biochemistry at a premier research institute in the country I would like to say that I have never seen such a fantastic explanation of any branch of science from Indian media!!! In fact, I learnt new science from you that ACE2 levels are higher in males than females. Sandhya this is really good stuff. I think you have a strong science background. With this way of communicating science or any other field you could revolutionize the way Indian media operates. I salute your spirit!!!

You have to remember that it's not the ACE enzyme that is the problem. ACE creates angiotensin-2 (AT-2), which is the one with all the deleterious effects if too much AT-2 is created. ACE-2 is a counterbalancing enzyme to ACE. ACE-2 grabs some of the AT-2 and converts it to Angiotensin-1-7 (AT-1-7), which has all the good effects ( opposite of AT-2), such as lowering blood pressure, in decreasing thrombogenesis ( blood clotting). AT-1-7 binds to a receptor called MAS to deliver its good effects; whereas, AT-2 binds to the AT-2 receptor to deliver its - not so good effects. BTW, I'm a professor of Cardiovascular and pulmonary pathology-- that's why I know this stuff.

@@willmcallister8464 There's a link to plentiful ACE 2 receptors on adipose tissue, likely because of increased production of angiotensin2 by fat cells. Some heful YT videos on the to9ic.

1. If smoking causes the creation of more ACE2 receptors, would that correlate to smoking being a risk factor for covid? I thought I heard early on that is wasn't considered a risk factor. Also, I wonder if this increase receptors in lungs only? 2. It makes sense to find these receptors in the nose and mouth, because this is the initial place where one fights off a virus via the innate immune system. So I wonder if bypassing this initial response reduces the body's ability to fight off the infection? It could be like trying to drive a car before it's warmed up. The innate system can sometimes even stop it from progressing all together, giving the body much needed time to prepare in case it does progress.

Two questions. You mention that it is a Zinc containing enzyme. If Zinc helps it bind, how is it that Zinc helps stop replication of the virus? Does A2 milk have anything to do with Ace2?

I started on Lisinopril and all of my covid symptoms came back after being symptom free for 5 weeks. Now a month after trying lisinopril which I am no longer taking I can barely get out of bed for more than 30 min. Im dizzy, light headed, brain fogged, weak and lethargic. Anxiety is really bad as well. They are saying its long haul covid, but I was fine till I tried lisinopril. Not sure what to do, something is wrong with me.

so.. maybe smoking can activate more ACE2 receptors in the nose and mouth ? this would help a virus to latch on to ACE2 inside the nose sooner, before entering the lungs ? wouldn't that be a novel way of vaccinating people also, not the smoking, but firing up the immune system starting with a nose spray or mouthwash with cov19 spikes ?

Every video i saw no 1 explain my questions. So still i am in confusion. 1-if Ace2 is an enzyme then , enzyme dont have receptor but a substrate. 2- ACE2 being an enzyme , what is its substrate and its product
@taibaimam7811
@taibaimam7811 3 жыл бұрын
@kiberenigest sebez So I'll speak from my personal knowledge, do counter check my answer. 1. Physiologically speaking Ace2 is is an enzyme that converts Angiotensin 2 to Angiotensin(1-7) in our body countering the effects of Angiotensin 2 and hence lowering blood pressure. So physiologically it is an enzyme, substrate of this enzyme is Angiotensin 2 and product if angiotensin(1-7). Now talking about the ACE2, its essentially an anzyme but it ACTS as a receptor for the sars cov 2. Now what happens is since sars cov 2 is keeping ACE 2 busy by bindig with it, its original physiological substrate cannot bind with it (original substrate- angiotensin 2) and does not get converted to Angiotensin(1-7) Hence Angiotensin 2 level are high leading to high blood pressure and increased inflammation. I hope this clears up your doubt :)
