Not a fish, not a coral, but an URCHIN! Wanted to bring something different to the all about series this week. And what an amazing clean up crew they are to have. Finally a pincushion that I found that lives in my country! I’ve seen some in a fish shop, probably not aquacultured, it’s most likely wild caught because I’m in the Indo-Pacific area, specifically the Philippines.

I wish I could have an urchin in my 20g cube. I had one once and it rampaged over everything and every morning a lot of my corals would be knocked over; Even some I thought were secured in. EXTREMELY good at cleaning up your tank but not worth it for me to have to constantly fix your corals.

Hi Brock, i love your videos. I have a question off the topic of this video. I just purchased a white spotted dwarf goby. He’s been hiding under the polyps of my acan coral, so should I be concerned about the coral eating him? Thanks for the great videos! I just subscribed.

For my 20 gallon nano reef I want the following for a CUC; pincushion sea urchin, sand sifting sea star, marble sea star, and a fire blood shrimp. 1 is this a good CUC that tackles the different areas of the tank and 2 is this a good number for a clean up crew?

Can a tuxedo urchin be safely kept with a diamond goby

Most definitely! You might see the diamond goby spit sand at the urchin if it gets close to its favorite cave, but other than that will be fine!

Would this urchin be a safe tank mate for a shallows coastal tank with 5 fiddler crabs, it's a 50 gallon breeder tank, very flat. If not, what would you recommend for tank buddies? The salinity is 1.022, a bit too salty for the fiddlers, but they have an ample supply of freshwater as well.

Yeah they would do okay together. I’ve never really seen crabs go after urchins in the tank.

Urchins I will go real slow. 2 hours on a slow drip. That might be a bit overkill to someone tho haha. Just know they are sensitive to changes in the water parameters.

Are pin cushion or pencil urchins better at clean up?

I’d say clean up wise, the pencils do better, but the pin cushions knock over less stuff. In my experience, whenever I had pencils, I was always flipping corals over. Pin cushions not as much.
